Take your surfing to new heights on an advanced surf vacation on the North Shore

Home to the biggest and heaviest waves on the planet, Oahu’s North Shore is the ultimate surfers’ testing ground. Here, the Seven Mile Miracle is the highest concentration of gnarly reef breaks and legendary big wave spots on the globe. Between Haleiwa and Velzyland, there are no less than 36 world-class surf breaks.

What are the best waves on the North Shore for experienced surfers?

Most of the waves are tricky, extremely rippable, hollow, with powerful closeouts, often breaking over shallow or sharp reefs. Therefore, they are only suited for experienced surfers. Some are for expert surfers only.

The Banzai Pipeline is one of the most sought-after and recognizable waves on the planet, the benchmark by which the waves on the North Shore are measured. It’s also one of the most dangerous in the world, with huge barreling waves breaking over razor-sharp reefs.

An iconic big wave spot, Waimea can hold some of the biggest rideable waves in the world, over 50ft. Waves over 40ft are common here.

Sunset Beach is one of the most famous right-hand waves in the world. It’s huge, with several peaks to choose from. Haleiwa is a tricky reef break just outside of the namesake surf town, famous for its rippable sections and hollow rights.

What are the vibes like on the North Shore?

Every little corner of Oahu’s North Shore exhales surf vibes. Many pro surfers spend their winters here, pushing their limits at the big wave surf spots and defending their titles at the iconic surfing competitions, the Billabong Pipe Masters and Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

The laidback surf town of Haleiwa is the preferred base camp for surfing on the North Shore, and chances are you’ll see the world’s top pros at the many lively local restaurants, bars, food trucks, and surf shops.

What is the best time to surf on the North Shore for advanced surfers?

Winter, between October and April, is when Oahu’s North Shore comes to life. The most powerful waves can be found between November and February, when the average swell size is 16ft, occasionally swelling to 36-50ft. That’s prime time for the pros to score some glassy big waves.
