Avellanas is a surfer’s paradise. The white beach in front of the camp is surrounded by mangrove forests and is home to 5 surf breaks that can be surfed at all tides and offer waves for all levels.
Not only they have spots that suit all abilities, but also the water is about 27 degrees Celsius year-round making a wetsuit obsolete during the whole year. And since there are no crowds on their beach, you can enjoy brakes between surf sessions resting peacefully under a palm tree.
Immerse yourself in relaxation and recreation with their outdoor pool, high-performance and regular surfboards for all levels, and a fully equipped gym. Their recovery center ensures you stay in top form for your surfing adventures.
Besides surfing, they also offer daily yoga sessions, which you can enjoy on their pool deck surrounded by lush jungle trees.

Perfect surf in all sizes
Their surf school in Costa Rica is located in one of the most versatile and consistent breaks in Central America. Of course, waves here at Playa Avellanas can be incredibly easy to surf. On the other hand, they can also offer more challenging rides when the swell is up.
In the immediate vicinity of the surf school, there are also five other breaks: La Purruja, El Parqueo, El Palo, El Estero de Avellanas, and Little Hawaii. Each of these breaks is different, with some breaking over a rocky bottom and others over a combination of reef and sand.
Accordingly, this makes them more suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. On top of that, they’re also only a short drive from world-class spots such as: Playa Negra, Langosta and Playa Grande
No matter if you are a rookie or an expert – here you will get your money’s worth.
Surf lessons and guiding
No matter if you have stood on a board once or twice before, you plan all your travels around surfing the world, or you want to experience the feeling of riding a wave for the first time, Rapture Surf Camp's local surf guides know every break and will take you to the one that suits your level and offers perfect conditions for that day.
They’ll show you how to successfully pop on the board, how to progress from whitewater to green waves and how to enhance your existing skills, taking you from riding to ripping. Of course, they have boards of all shapes, sizes, and abilities you can rent at their school.
Every day, you will have a delicious daily breakfast. After that, you usually go surfing and then yoga classes to relax your body and soul. Once a week, there will be a beautiful bonfire. At the bar, you can enjoy a drink and chill with your friends.
Children policy

Level 1: Beginners surf course
The beginner module is a great fit for those who have never surfed before. Also, for those who haven’t surfed in a while and want to go through the basics one more time. Their surf instructors will make sure that you develop your skills in line with your level. Moreover, they will make sure you’ll catch as many waves as possible while having fun with the other surfers.
A significant part of their guests at all camps are complete beginners, that’s why their school organizes lessons for complete beginners from Mondays to Saturdays, and as you progress during your time at camp, so does the instruction you receive.
With the help of their patient and experienced instructors, in just a few days, you might already be riding green waves.
What will you learn in the beginner module
Your first surf lesson begins with an introduction about safety, beach awareness, and as well a clear overview of surfing equipment. After you get familiar with these concepts, you will start to learn the basics on how to handle a surfboard, paddle out, catch a wave, and get to your feet.
These are some fundamentals you will learn at their surf camp in the beginner module:
- Discover what kind of stance suits you best

- Learn how to paddle properly
- How to pick and catch the best wave
- Get familiar about standing up on the board

Level 2: Intermediate surf course
The main difference with the beginner module is the level of autonomy in the water. To be suitable for the intermediate classes, you should be able to get up on waves on your own. Also, have a strong paddling ability, and feel comfortable in deep water. If these requirements represent a challenge for you, you might benefit more from the beginner course.
Their instructors will help you to:

What can you expect from the intermediate course
This module is focused on getting to the outside (lineup) in waist-high waves. They’ll teach you to catch green waves and ride the face of the wave instead of going straight in the white water.
Their instructors will give you personalized tips on how you surf and about what to improve as the quality of the waves you pick, the speed you are able to generate, your agility on the wave, etc. Their advice will help you develop your technique and improve your surfing style.

Surf guiding for experienced surfers
Surf guiding is always included in the room price and provided at no extra cost to all experienced surfers looking to surf at one of the many world-class breaks along the area around our surf camp.
This option does not include instruction and it is intended for surfers that know how to surf (level 3), but just don’t know where to surf in Costa Rica.
Their experienced surf guides will take you to the best waves suited to your ability and advise the best places. Either to paddle out or to inform you of any possible currents, rips, and dangers you need to be aware of.
Participants in the surf guiding group must be advanced surfers with the ability to:
- Paddle out
- Duck dive through the waves to the backline
- Read and ride green waves
- Select / catch waves on their own
- Deep knowledge of surfers etiquette and water safety
If you do not fit into this category, but have skills more than beginner level that you wish to improve on, they suggest opting for the “intermediate” lessons instead.
Location
The camp is located just 20-minute driving from Tamarindo, Costa Rica‘s party epicenter, yet the location is secluded in the middle of the jungle on a pristine white sand beach.
Hidden gems such as Playa Langosta, Playa Grande, and Playa Negra (mostly known from the surf movie Endless Summer II) are all accessible in minutes from camp. Rapture Surf Camp offers shuttle services and bike rentals if you want to explore the other surf spots in the area. Tamarindo is famous for being the party capital of the Guanacaste region.
In case you are in need of a major post-surfing fiesta, Rapture Surf Camp can organize a shuttle that will take you there in 20 minutes so you don’t have to worry about driving after a few drinks.
In Playa Avellanas, they are a 10-minute walk to the beach through a beautiful mangrove forest where you can observe plenty of wildlife.

Arrival by car
Their surf camp is right across from Cabinas Las Olas and on your left before you reach the right turn to Lola’s. Take the left turn towards Vida Verde, then you’ll see the signs towards Rapture.
A 4×4 vehicle is not needed, high clearance is optional, it is a dirt road indeed but completely passable with a sedan or compact car even during the rainy season, just go slow and stay in low gear.
Arrival by bus
They can do pick up from Tamarindo bus stop – with their driver in a new, safe, and comfortable 4×4 vehicle. All transfers from Costa Rica can be booked online but must be paid cash directly at the surf camp.
Arrival by shuttle
They work with a company that has transfers from several places in Costa Rica. Please notice prices are subject to change as it's from a third-party company. They can do airport pick ups from Liberia (Costa Rica) for up to 4 people – with their driver in a new, safe, and comfortable 4×4 vehicle.
