Music is a universal language, the perfect way to enhance or showcase certain feelings.

We’ve all got our little soundtrack to life; songs that we love to listen to when we’re getting ready to hit the town, when we’ve had our heart broken, when we’re going on a road trip or when we feel like dancing our hearts out.

Surf music emerged back in the 1960s in California and was invented by surfers themselves. It is a subgenre of rock music that was and forever will be associated with the surf culture. We have 10 awesome surf songs that will surely get you in that surfing mood!

Give these a listen and you’ll be ready to hit the swell!

10. Jack Johnson – You and Your Heart (2010)

Jack Johnson is so much more than a singer/songwriter; he’s an awesome surfer too! And the video for You and Your Heart shows just that. The song is perfect for a day in the sun. It’s upbeat, happy and will definitely get you in a good mood.

9. The Bel-Airs – Mr. Moto (1961)

This is the song they play in pretty much every single movie from the 80’s when they show people surf. It’s such a classic that your surf sessions simply wouldn’t be the same without this playing in your car on your way to the beach.

8. The Trashmen – Surfin’ Bird (1963)

Few songs are as catchy and as annoying as Surfin’ Bird is. But it’s just that kind of song that you love to hate, that you simply cannot shake off! It sticks with you and you will find yourself humming it all the time. And it works great with surfing!

7. Katrina & the Waves – Walking on Sunshine (1983)

An incredibly upbeat song that sticks with you, Walking on Sunshine makes you want to get out there and do a bit of walking on sunshine! It works wonders for pumping you up before a surf session.

6. The Pointer Sisters – I’m So Excited (1982)

I’m So Excited is a classic 80’s song, but what cemented it as a summer song is the movie Summer Lovers (1982) about a carefree couple having the time of their life on the Greek island of Santorini.

5. Pearl Jam – Oceans (1992)

A classic surf song, Pearl Jam’s Oceans has a video to match! You couldn’t make a more 90’s video even if you tried. If you’re hitting the surf, this song will provide the ultimate chill and soundtrack to your surf session.

4. Neon Jungle – Trouble (2014)

Neon Jungle’s Trouble was featured in one of the most visually stunning movies, The Shallows (2016), featuring Blake Lively. Unlike most of the songs on our list, this one’s not only fairly recent, but it’s also upbeat and will get you all wound up for having an awesome time in the water.

3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Scar Tissue (1999)

I’ve always thought the lyrics went “With the buds I’ll share this lonely view”, when in fact, it was “With the birds, I’ll share this lonely view.” Either way, Scar Tissue is an excellent chilling song for those who love to hit the road, surf and hang out with their… buds.

2. Beach Boys – Surfing USA (1963)

Ah, the Beach Boys... God bless ‘em! Their smash hit Surfing USA is one of the most legendary surf songs in the world and no surf session is complete without it. Granted, it is a bit dated, but there are some songs out there that simply work!

1. The Lively Ones – Surf Rider (1963)

The Lively Ones were quite big in Southern California in the awesome 60’s and Surf Rider is possibly the most classic surf song out there. It was also featured at the end of the similarly classic Pulp Fiction, which brought it back to the public’s eye.
