Welcome on board! Beng Bengs Surf Camp is glad to lead you over the rainbow; in this secret and magical land, there has just been born an emotional place where your surfing dreams will come true. In the impressive beautiful wildness of Nyang Nyang island in Mentawais, you will find yourself surrounded by a world made of waves in which you can live the best surfing experience of your life!
Welcome to Beng Bengs Surf Camp! Situated on the idyllic Nyang Nyang Island, the guesthouse is situated less than 100 meters away from a world-class wave, E Bay. The guesthouse can accommodate up to 12 people, there are also two speedboats and experienced surf guides who will help you find the ride of your life, whatever your experience level.
The beachfront location is situated right in front of a world-class wave named E Bay and is a beautiful, private, four-bedroom guesthouse catering for a maximum of 12 people. It is a traditional Mentawaian house of 170 square meters built by local handicraftsmen. There are two shared rooms and two double rooms, one of the shared rooms is furnished with four single beds, while the other room has two single beds and one bunk bed.
Each room is equipped with an air conditioner and a fan, mosquito nets, and plugs. The double rooms are equipped with an air conditioner and fan too. All linens are provided and just outside of the rooms, there are two bathrooms, western style, one of them is equipped with hot water shower and another one with cool water shower.
The surf camp has a total of three speedboats, two big and a small one. These boats are hand-made Mentawaian canoes designed and made by locals in Siberut. The local construction ensures that they have been created to work and be effective in any Mentawaian sea and weather condition. They are also equipped with surfboard racks, seatings, and obviously, a roof to shade you from the strong tropical sun.
The smaller boat can carry four people and runs with one engine of 40 horsepower, while one of the big ones can carry eight people and the other one, up to 10 and both run with two engines of 40 horsepower each. Trust the experienced surf guides to take you to the best waves. Alternatively, you can decide amongst the group where you would like to go and which waves you would like to check out. Another positive aspect of having different speedboats is that you have the option to do different activities. There are lots of ways you can spend your time at Beng Bengs.
You will normally wake up in the morning around 6:30 a.m. Enjoy a great breakfast together while checking out the surf. E Bay is approximately 100 meters from your breakfast table. From there, have a look at the weather and depending on the waves, the swell, the tide, and the wind, the camp will organize the best possible surfing session for the day.
After a morning surf, return to Beng Bengs for lunch. Once you have eaten, take some time to chill and let your food go down. Once you have regained some energy, repeat the process and jump back in the boat and head out for an afternoon surf. You will normally stay out until dusk but for safety reasons, it is not possible to come back when it gets dark.
Once back at the camp, after a “hard" day of surfing, feel free to have a fresh regenerating shower or a relaxing hot one and then get ready for the dinner, the rest of the evening will be spent socializing, organizing the next day’s activities, resting, reading, watching out the photos of the day, or whatever you prefer to enjoy the calm tropical night.
For those who don’t surf, there are some beautiful trails that cross the islands. Beng Bengs is equipped with some snorkeling gear for those who fancy checking out the reef. For the last day at the camp, the price doesn’t include a surfing boat trip but only the transfer to Siberut and only breakfast is included.
Once that the idea to surf in Mentawai grows in your mind, fasten your seatbelt and be ready to find yourself in paradise, there’s nowhere else like this magic place on the face of the earth; for a surfer, it represents the most emotional and incredible surfing adventure and experience of his life, an amazing goal in his surfing career, the dreams which finally come true, this is a surfing wonderland where besides massive and barreling waves you can find, alone or with your best friends, the calm and the tranquility of a surfing session on easier waves while admiring a breathtaking sunset before enjoying your deserved beer surrounded by the relaxing voices of nature.
Palm trees, great offshore waves, jungle, desert islands scattered everywhere, boats, music, good food, nice people, and much more; all of these will be your playmates and the mixture that will lead you to live the best surfing experience of your life until you can't do without it anymore.
If you decide to come to Mentawais you can do it, without any doubt, from March to November. Due to their position in the Indian Ocean, the islands are exposed to the south-southwest swells, so from March to April, the waves are smaller but consistent as well. Then they will become stronger in May. The same happens to the ending of October and the beginning of November, smaller but consistent waves again.
From April to October, strong swells from South Africa and Antarctica reach the coral reefs, carrying amazing waves that roll into clean and perfect barrels. Now you can plan your trip thinking of this: If your choice is not crowded and easier surfing, you are suggested to book in March, April, October, and November, if you like to play rough you must book from May to September.
The Beng Bengs Surf Camp is situated on the west side of the Nyang Nyang Island. A sunny tropical paradise, immersed in the Indian Ocean, and it’s here that after a long journey, you can rest your body and your mind while relaxing on a sunbed by the beach, looking at the deep blue ocean that surrounds you.
If admiring the perfect left-hander "E-Bay" right in front of the guesthouse is too much temptation, grab your board and start paddling toward it! Jump in the boat for a two minute trip to another left-hander named Beng Bengs (now you know how the camp got its name), alternatively, you can also take a 15-minute trek through the tropical jungle.
It doesn’t matter what you choose to do, the most important thing is that you are finally here, on Nyang Nyang Island, one of the five Islands that belong to the southern Siberut region of Mentawais, an area well-known as the legendary “Playground”. It is located 135 kilometers southwest of the Sumatra mainland at almost 2 degrees below the equator.
The island has five famous and different surf breaks: Beng Bengs, E-Bay, Pitstop, Bankvaults, and Nipussi. The Mentawai archipelago lies off the west coast of Sumatra in northern Indonesia and is made up of the four main islands of Siberut, Sipora, and North and South Pagai with numerous smaller islands scattered throughout the region. These islands have the perfect combination of swell and wind to satisfy every surfer's desire.
Mentawai (also known as Mentawei and Mentawi) are the native people of the Mentawai Islands. They live a seminomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle in the coastal and rainforest environments of the island. The population is estimated to be about 64,000 and the Mentawai language belongs to the Austronesian language family.
The Mentawai live in the traditional dwelling called the UMA, which is a longhouse and is made by weaving bamboo strips together to make walls and thatching the roofs with grass. The floor is raised on stilts and is made of wood planks. The people are characterized by their heavy spirituality and body art. The main clothing for men is a loincloth and they are adorned with necklaces and flowers in their hair and ears.
Women wear the same thing, except they wear a piece of cloth wound around the waist. Women wear small sleeveless vests and they sharpen their teeth with a chisel for an aesthetic reason to make their teeth look like a shark’s. Traditional tattooing is done with a needle and a piece of wood.
Besides the Mentawai natives, there are locals who work at the surf camp; an indispensable mix of culture composed of hospitable local people and a few western people. Together, they form a small family of Beng Bengs staff members.
It is one of the best left-handers in Mentawai, this wave is a perfect round and it has a powerful wall that can be barreled all the way when it’s going off. When it is less than five feet, it is an easy perfection with two nice barrel sections. When it is six feet or over, it is just as perfect but it becomes very powerful and tubes are as round as they get. It is good with all tides but more hollow at low tide. Winds don’t affect this wave that much due to its unique location but it is best when the northeast wind blows onto it.
The island (Kroniki) is one of the most amazing spots in the area and just being in the water makes it a real pleasure, it can be long and very playful. It barrels when the section comes closer to the rocks on a lower tide. It’s great for turns and speed for all level surfers.
This is a left-hander located just a 10-minute walk from the camp or 2 minutes with boat, this is a funny and less barreled wave compared to the high standard of the area and it is perfect for a medium skill level surfer who wants to enjoy the perfection of Mentawaian waves getting occasionally a cover-up when the swell is from the west and it is a little bit bigger, it also fits for a beginner when it is 3/4 feet while it becomes harder when it goes over or when E-bay is really on fire; also if it could hold the size better.
This wave has an easy take off that takes you to a short but very playful wall, the beach is one of the most spectacular in the area in terms of tropical scenery. It’s an easy paddle from E-Bay; it’s best at 3 to 5 feet, works on all tides, and it’s great for right-hand lovers looking for quality easy waves.
This wave is an absolutely amazing right-hander when it gets good, breaking in deep water in two different sections, it is the big wave of the area and it breaks with all tides. It is better with an incoming tide, at low tide, it can be unforgiving. It can handle up to 15 feet and has a great take off with a big barrel section at the end.
This right-hander is probably one of the most consistent waves in Mentawai, it can offer real fun, big take-offs, and a fast section down the line that can become very playful. It is great for big turns and different maneuvers but can also offer a barrel section when small on a low tide. The bay where it is situated is an absolute treasure and it is just worth surfing for that, you can experience a beautiful sunset there.
It is one of the best and most consistent lefts in the Mentawai. It breaks over one of the most beautiful coral reefs of the area, it is safer at high tide and really good at mid-tide. It can be dangerous but has a perfect barrel on low tide. At 6 feet to 8 feet and offshore, it is unbelievably perfect. A fair easy take off puts you straight into a very powerful barrel section; without doubt one of the best waves in the area.
It is one of the best waves in the world when it is on. This amazing left-hander is better on a high tide at 6 to 10 feet and then you have chances to see some of the most amazing barrels of your life. It goes for over 300 meters throwing constant and unbelievable tube sections. You might as well get the best and most intensive barrel of your life! It is better on a southwest swell and light East-South East winds.
This wave lies in the middle of the southern part of the playground area, breaking left and right; perfect for beginners and surfers who want to enjoy turns and easy surf over beautiful coral reef. Good in all tides, it usuallly breaks from 2 to 4 feet northern winds.
It is one of the longest and most perfect right-handers in the world and the wave that you must surf at least once in your life. When big south swells and northerly winds, it is definitely the wave to surf. More than 400 meters of pure perfection that can offer more than four barrel sections. An easy take off puts you right in a perfect and endless wall where all you have to do is run and let its big barrel sections cover you up. It is best at 5 to 8 feet, mid to high tide. It’s one of the reasons to visit Mentawai; a real world-class wave.
About 600 meters further down from the Rifles take-off zone, this beautiful right-hander wave puts you straight from the take-off into a very fun barrel section and onto playful walls; it breaks at all tides on shallow reefs. Perfect in a small southerly swell and north winds, this wave is a perfect option on smaller days.
It is one of the most consistent lefts of the Mentawais. Located in front of the idyllic island of Pananggalat, makes it a real pleasure just to be in the water. Normally, it has two sections, one outside that is the most consistent and offers great take offs and fun walls. This wave gets better as it gets bigger; sometimes it can go all the way to the inside bowl and it is there that you can get a very fun barrel section, which works better on a big south swell at low tide.
It is short but very fun right-hander suitable to make great turns on a very easy wave for all kinds of surfers. It is best with northerly wind mid tides and 3 to 5 feet. It can be dangerous on low tide getting very shallow on a sharp coral reef. It is a great option when the whole area is blown out by west-southwest winds
Inside of the bay, about 300 meters down the line, there is another point that breaks when Kandui is over six feet and even though it is a little shorter, it can be almost as intense and perfect as its big brother. It is better on a high tide, otherwise, it can be too close to the reef. It also needs a southwest swell but better with southern winds.
