The city of Matara, Sri Lanka is located on the southern coast of the country’s Southern Province. Escape the crowds in Weligama and travel to Matara, offering the same surf conditions but a more relaxed vibe. Matara Beach is a wonderful surf destination, so if you’re looking for something exotic and beautiful, Matara is the place to be. In your free time, make sure you explore your surroundings, sample all the delicious local food, and take lots of photos of all the beautiful temples and historic sites. Reserve your spot on a Matara surf camp and have your best surf vacation to date!
The surf spot Madiha is great for confident surfers. Weligama and Mirissa are just around the corner if you are looking for more gentle spots
The best time to surf in Matara is from November to March when you can expect higher waves and perfect conditions. Matara is, just like the other spots on the South West coast, known for its contrasting wind and swell patterns. Although you can find the most consistent swells from April to October, there are also frequent SW onshores making the surf conditions more challenging. During this time it’s still possible to surf in the morning, but expect rain, dirty water, and strong winds. For better surf conditions, it’s therefore recommended to surf on the South West coast of Sri Lanka from November to March, when waves are typically 0,5-2 meters (2-6 ft) high, and the water is clean.
Matara is known for its especially beautiful sunsets, so stick around if you just visited this surf spot for a day. Matara is not known for its great nightlife scene, but you can find some places inside the Fort district where you can grab some beers. Also, the garden parties at The Doctor’s House are probably one of the coolest on the south coast, regularly hosts parties, and has the best pizza in town. For exploring the region, visit the Matara Fort District for most restaurant options or drive further along the coast to find some local surfer beach bars with hipster goodies, good coffee, and trendy dishes. More into budget and local? A 100m down the street you’ll find lots of local curry platters.
