Accommodation
The venue in Coopers Beach offers plenty of room for everyone to hang out in. With stunning 180° views over Doubtless Bay, you can relax and ponder the coming days. Water Nomads caters for small groups of up to six guests. Thus you will enjoy the large living spaces and comfortable bedrooms.
Program
Skill set
This trip is suitable for advanced beginners, as well as intermediate to expert wing foil, windfoil, and windsurfers.
Due to the nature of the sailing locations, Water Nomads can usually find sheltered areas for less experienced people. At the same time, more experienced surfers can be out blasting and playing in the rolling swells and waves. They will point you to the best spot for your skill level.
For keen surfers, the world-famous break of Ahipara / Shipwreck Bay is only a 50-minute drive from the accommodation! Taupo Bay is even closer, or get a quick dawn surf in Coopers Beach. Please contact Water Nomads if you are unsure if this trip is right for you. They will be happy to help.
What to expect
You will be taken on a six-day fully catered windsurfing / winging adventure to the Far North. The timing of the trips will be tailored to the ideal weather conditions, maximizing your water time.
Self-drive
Water Nomads will respect your independence throughout the holiday so you will be provided with a hearty lunch individually packed each day. They will also provide you with spot location and weather condition advice, and they will maintain contact with you even if you choose an alternate location to explore.
They will not treat you like a school group nor guide your every movement. They will ensure that you are at the right place at the right time. It will, however, ultimately be your judgment based on your ability to sail in the presented conditions.
Itinerary
On your Northland wing foil and windsurf holiday, the itinerary will be pretty relaxed, and the flow will usually be dictated by the wind forecast.
On the first evening, there will be no fixed schedule. Access to the accommodation will be from 16:00. Everyone will be traveling and arriving as their schedules (work) allow.
Some will be taking the day off with a plan of being up early for a Northland session, or looking to get a session in on the journey up. Others will be arriving late post-work. Early arrivers can opt to sort themselves dinner, or pitch together for a local Thai takeaway meal enjoyed at the accommodation (Water Nomads highly recommends the Thai!).
On the following days, breakfast will be agreed upon, usually between 08:00 - 09:00. The fresh coffee will only stop when you stop drinking it. Your lunch will be provided and individually packed to give you the freedom should you wish to spit up, or just enjoy at your leisure.
Your evening meal will start after dark when everyone is refreshed and ready. This is usually agreed to be at around 19:00. The last day will finish when you are ready to leave. Again, you will have your packed lunch. Play hard with Water Nomads, or enjoy a sweet session on the way home.
Instructors
Bevan
Bevan grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, exploring the backcountry by foot and bike. With his adventurous spirit, Bevan developed a keen eye to record stunning places and beautiful moments which founded a long standing passion for photography. After a 5 year OE (overseas experience) in London, he returned to New Zealand, this time settling in Nelson, before a career move brought him to Auckland. There, he did get introduced to windsurfing by Heidi. Together, they founded Water Nomads in 2018. Bevan is the person behind the camera and making all the amazing coffees in the morning.
Heidi
Heidi grew up at Lake Constance in Germany. Windsurfing was her passion from an early age. After a backpacking trip to New Zealand in 2009 she moved to Auckland permanently in 2011. For several years she worked for a local surf and windsurf shop, learning the ins and outs of the industry before founding Water Nomads in 2018, offering top windsurf and wingfoil rental equipment and boutique trips. Heidi is responsible for coming up with new Surfari Trips, organising all the logistics and offering windsurf and wingfoil lessons for our guests during the trip.
Location
The Karikari Peninsula, with its white sand beaches and crystal clear water, provides opportunities to foil in any wind direction. Northland is known as the ‘winterless north,’ with mild temperatures and reliable wind conditions to suit all wing foil and windsurf skill levels. The place will provide the perfect winter break to give yourself a welcome vacation.
Where you can sail:
Rangiputa Beach
This place is well known for its beautiful foiling and freeride conditions with its unbelievable white sand and clear water. There is an awesome speed-run if the tide and wind direction are right and you want to test yourself and your gear!
Tokerau Beach
This is a long, curved, sandy beach that can get nice waves in easterlies. It’s very forgiving and perfect for your first steps in wave sailing. The northern end is usually fairly sheltered from wind and waves, whereas the southern end can get pretty big and wild. You can choose!
Coopers Beach
This offers excellent foiling and freeride conditions, and can also produce beautiful rolling swells. It is also literally at the bottom of the road from your accommodation!
Conditions:
Sea water temperature
The average sea temperature of Doubtless Bay in June and July is approximately 16°C. For comparison, it is much the same as Christchurch's summer sea temperatures.
Wind
The Northland wing foil and windsurf holiday will be held in the winter months of June, July, and August, during which the wind is reasonably reliable, with around 10 to 20 knots. As a rule of thumb, you will either be experiencing a Westerly frontal system or an Easterly frontal system.
If there is a day of light conditions, there is always a surf / SUP-surf possibility on either the west coast or east coast!
Due to the nature of the peninsula, you can find differing wind conditions and water states to suit everyone's expectations. Tokerau Beach at one end can have good swell and strong wind, while the other end is flat water with lighter wind.
