With dorm-style accommodation for the social butterflies looking to make new mates, private rooms for the shred heads that need a comfy place to recharge, and a dog-house out the back for furry friends (or the damp-towel ex that managed to leech along on the Mediterranean holiday), they’ve got space for you and your mates. Unlike other accommodations in the area, they’ll make sure you’re well-fed at the end of the day.
You will stay in a dorm for 3 to 9 people.
Program
Stoke Portugal Surf House doesn’t just push you into the water and wish you luck—their experienced surf guides are up early every morning scoping out where the swell is pumping, all to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time. Whether you’re chasing slabs or foamy white-wash so that you have the space to learn, they’ll make sure you’re out there, laughing, learning, and having the time of your life.
When you’re not getting salty, there’s plenty to keep the stoke rolling. Hit the local wineries (Santa Cruz was coined the European City of Wine in 2018), feast on some fresh, locally caught seafood, or sit back and take in a sunset so good that it’ll have you googling “Portugal long term visas”. They also offer horse-back riding options and can point you in the direction of nearby hikes—for the beach bums sick of the surf and sand.
Stoke Travel’s digital nomad-friendly destination
As notorious sesh-gremlins, it’s not always easy to find an excursion with them where you can pull yourself away from the chaos and slow down—whether that means logging in, or logging out and detoxing. While you’ll still make the most of the nearby nightlife in Santa Cruz and Lisbon, and the backyard poolside bar, at the Santa Cruz retreat you’ll have ample time, peace, and Wi-Fi signal to log into Slack or Teams, and clock your hours. With a chill living area or the poolside sun terrace to clock in from, it won’t even feel like you’ve done a day of work before you have to clock out and join them at the beach, on a day trip, or head into Lisbon—whatever you want to do when you’re off the clock!
Itinerary
This itinerary is meant to be just a guide, not a set in stone, to the minute, school itinerary. This is what your day may look like at the Stoke Surf House, depending on the waves, weather, your wants and needs. There’s always something for you to do, but it’s your holiday so feel free to lay on the beach, have a beer, or go on an adventure with your new surf mates instead.
Morning
Wake up to a homely, cooked breakfast down in the chill-out area and exchange stories from last night’s antics, read the surf report and get excited to head out into the waves. They’ll warm up with a yoga and stretch session in the garden, before you head to the beach. Grab your board and either scout out the best banks on the beach, or head into your lesson with one of the surf instructors. If you’re not doing a lesson, feel free to grab a bike and explore along the coast for some unreal swells!
Afternoon
When you’re all surfed out, dig into your packed lunch, or hunt out some Portuguese delicacies at some beachfront eateries. Or maybe it’s time to go for a dip in the pool and have a bevvie from the backyard bar. Maybe you want to head out hiking through the dunes, or grab a bike and a board and explore the other spots, or even head into Lisbon if you like! In the afternoon you will most likely find yourself hanging out at the house watching the sun go down over a few drinks, sharing stories or becoming lord of the ping pong table.
Evening
If you’re the sensible type, you can get in a good night’s sleep and be up bright and early for sunrise yoga and stretching. If some more drinks, music and exploring sound more like you, you can kick on in the backyard with a BBQ and pool party, before exploring the happenings of Santa Cruz. If there’s enough of you wanting to kick on, you can go and explore the iconic nightlife of Lisbon too, or any local festivities that may be on during your stay!
Location
The Portugal Surf Camp is in Santa Cruz, a 50-minute drive away from Lisbon Airport, and nestled right in between Ericeira and Peniche, in close proximity to some elite surf spots for learners and pro-shredders.
Meet Santa Cruz – Portugal’s underrated hub for surfing
Santa Cruz, Portugal, is an underrated surfing mecca in Portugal that has yet to hit the tourism map. Smack bang in the middle of world-renowned breaks—Ericeira and Peniche—Santa Cruz is still catching the powerful Atlantic swell while holding onto the quaint, fishing-village heritage where the beers are poured generously and the locals are welcoming (translation: near-empty lineups and fewer tourist traps than neighboring towns).
With famous wave breaks like Nazare just a short drive up the coast, if a 60 foot wave spectacle is underway, you’re only a stone's throw away from the action. In a similar vein, if you’ve lucked out and booked your stay for a week that the WSL is in town, they’ll make sure you don’t miss a thing; qualifying series have been held at Santa Cruz beach in previous years.
