  • Travel Guidance and Advice From Staff

Looking for the best surf tour in Indonesia? Want to know some of the best things to do in Bali? No matter what you’re looking for, the staff is full of knowledge and guidance to point you in the right direction.

Who stays at the camp

Apart from the surfers who want to learn, guests are quite diverse. Young families, surfing couples, ol’ boys, and crew just looking for fun cruisey waves! 50% of guests are surfer girls and the camp is always a lovely mix of guys and girls of all ages. The camp generally does not attract surfers hunting big barrels or the super-serious "surf or die" crowd; it's all about having fun and cruising here.

The camp loves to have a good time at Red Island, both in and out of the water and at times, it is in the evening. Most nights of the week are pretty chill but you never know when an impromptu "good night" is going to kick-off and who are they to stop people having a great time on their holiday! The camp has a midnight curfew in which case guests are welcome to go down to the beach if they want to continue the night.

Bugs and insects and all other living creatures

The camp is lucky enough to be surrounded by a National Park at Red Island. This means plenty of creatures including bugs, moths, birds, geckos, snakes, cats, dogs, fish, pigs, monkeys, and according to locals, still the odd tiger or two. To minimize the chances of these creatures entering your room, it’s best to keep your door shut when you can.

Restaurant/Pool/Hang-out area

There is a TV with literally 1000 channels on it including sports channels, there is also a pool table, volleyball court, and badminton set. For relaxing, there are many bean bags in the common area and around the garden, including a hammock cluster where you can laze about with a novel and your crew.

In this surf camp program, there are three private two-hour surfing lessons. If you are staying with a group, the lessons will then be taught in a group. Also, you will get to learn surfing from qualified surf instructors and guides. Moreover, the waves are consistent, uncrowded, and trade winds blow off-shore all day so you can surf anytime you want.

If you wish to just relax and chill, there are facilities such as infinity pool, pool table, volleyball net/yard, lush garden, and many places for you to lounge around in-between surf time. Furthermore, there is also plenty of time for you to surf, enjoy fun beach-breaks, lazing in a hammock by the pool, or go for trekking around the villages and mountainous regions around Red Island.

Once you arrive at camp

Upon being greeted by the staff, you will be showed to your rooms and given a quick tour of the camp and facilities. From there, you can unwind, familiarize yourself with the village, and SURF SURF SURF!.

The Surf

The main break, "Mixjuice", an a-frame beach-break with long right and left-hand peelers is just out front! If in the rare case the swell is too small for "Mix Juice" there are shifting sand-banks down the beach where the beach faces all available swell, so you are able to walk down the beach and pick a peak. Red Island can have strong currents in big swells and if you’re in doubt, don’t paddle out.

On average, waves break in the 2-4 feet range most days and while "Mixjuice" breaks on all tides, the low-mid tide is the best. In wet season months (December-March), the breaks further down the beach come alive, perfect lefts and rights grind into a deep channel meaning easy paddle outs and epic waves.

Red Island has become a popular beach with domestic travelers on Sundays. Expect the village to come alive on the weekends, especially Sunday, where busloads of beach goers come and hangout down the beach. Expect to have your photo taken with many local tourists on Sundays, try to enjoy the festive spirit of Sundays in the village. By 6 p.m., they have all gone back to their villages and Red Island goes back to the sleepy little village it is for the rest of the week.

The Team

The team at Red Island Surf Camp is made up of experienced Western and Indonesian operators who are passionate about East Java and the surrounding area. They can tell you everything you need to know during your stay. The camp welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds to join and surf in Indonesia.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never surfed in your life or if you’re a seasoned pro, they’ll make sure you get the most out of your stay. Families are welcome, as are groups of travelers, and solo travelers too. At the end of the day, they’re happy to just get everyone together and ensure you all have an epic time!

Surf & Waves

Red Island is home to one of the most consistent beach breaks in Indonesia. Red Island truly is a surfer’s paradise. The camp hosts guests from all over the world that travel to Red Island to experience fun, uncrowded waves, and a relaxed village atmosphere. There are a variety of waves that are ideal for all levels of surfers. The waves at Red Island are sand bottom.

Red Island is a calm and tranquil place that gives you all the joy of surfing on a beach that’s not overcrowded with tourists. Many people who visit Red Island come to learn to surf and improve their technique and that is because they have some of the funnest, uncrowded waves in Indonesia. Regardless of your skill level, coming to Red Island will provide you with a new and exciting surfing experience.

Red Island waves are excellent all year round, therefore, you can visit any time of the year. From May until November, the camp has the most consistent swells, which is the ideal time for more experienced surfers.

  • Beginners

If this is the first time you’ve taken a surf tour in Bali, Java, or anywhere else in Indonesia; you might feel a little intimidated by the reef breaks and large waves. However, at Red Island, the waves are suitable for beginners to surf all year round. So, it doesn’t matter when you arrive because you can avoid the heaviest waves until you feel a little more confident. The surf camp staff are always on hand to offer advice or give you directions to the best spots.

  • Longboarders

Guests who enjoy surfing longboards can also visit Red Island at any time of the year because the uncrowded surf is perfect for that activity. You will always have lots of space and so, you don’t need to worry about bumping into other surfers or feeling claustrophobic in the water. You can even learn to surf using longboards for the first time while you’re here. The possibilities are endless.

  • Intermediate/advanced

Advanced surfers can also come and visit at any time, it is advisable to book your trip between the months of May and November for the best conditions. That will help to ensure the waves are at their best and you’ll get the most exciting experience possible. So, make sure you consider that advice before booking your trip to Java from Bali or anywhere else in Indonesia. While surfing is a massive part of what you'll do here, there are also loads of other great activities.

This retreat will be held at Red Island (Pulau Merah) in Indonesia, it is an uncrowded surf spot situated in Banyuwangi, East Java and close to Bali. The island lies in a secluded and beautiful bay, it is surrounded by mountains and is right on the beach. The camp is overlooking the surf and the amazing bay with a view of the beautiful islet jutting out, which is where Red Island got its name from.

The Locals

The locals here at Pulau Merah (Red Island) are super friendly and warm and will always greet you with a warm smile and a wave. Most villagers do not speak English, so brush up on your Indonesian greetings for example "Apa Kabar" is "How are you" in Indonesian. There is a growing crew of local grommets, they are all super friendly and often will surf together in the afternoon.

This can make the line-up seem busy (5-10 groms) for an hour or so each day, but as guests are normally on their second, third, or fourth surf, this is generally a very social surf and great fun. You will never have a problem getting waves at Red Island and will be amazed at how many more waves you can catch there than anywhere else you surf.
