Recent global events have turned lives and livelihoods upside down the last few years. Priorities have shifted and continue to shift as new dramatic global events continue to occur. This unstable and unpredictable time in their lives has motivated Local Surf Maroc to offer a getaway to Morocco to relax and rejuvenate during a week long Yin yoga and surf retreat.
The Surf Riad is a purpose-built Moroccan Riad for hosting guests in Tamraght, Taghazout Bay, Morocco. The Surf Riad embodies the essence of Moroccan charm and hospitality, with comfortable beds and delicious homemade food. With its location further up the hill, what it lacks in proximity to amenities it makes up for in a calm, quiet atmosphere and breathtaking view of Taghazout Bay.
The Surf Riad’s architecture is in the traditional style of a Riad, with an open roof to let the daylight in and cozy corners to relax. The terrace is the Surf Riad’s key feature with a stunning view of Taghazout Bay. With a traditional Amazigh sitting area to enjoy an aromatic mint tea and tables with coverings to enjoy meals, you’ll find it hard to take your eyes off the view.
Their aim is to create a safe and secure environment for everyone who joins their retreat in the seaside village of Tamraght, Taghazout Bay, Morocco. You’ll have the chance to immerse yourself into a relaxing and meditative yoga practice, eating healthy Moroccan food, and allowing yourself the chance to slow down your life as you spend your week in the sun, sand, and sea.
In their regular surf and yoga holiday experiences, they mention that surfing and yoga are ideal companions when embarking on a journey to improve your life physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. For this seven night and eight day Yin yoga and surf retreat, the yoga classes focus on the Yin practice to help your body, mind, and soul slow down and rest, which differs from their usual surf and yoga surf experiences.
The opportunity to surf at some of Taghazout Bay’s finest beaches during this week will remain at the same standard as their other surf experiences, with lessons being progressive and equally informative.
The surf lessons will be taught on the beach, to find balance and acceptance to adapt to the ever changing conditions of the water, further supporting the aim of the retreat of finding stillness.
Whether it’s Yin yoga or surfing, their aim is that you get their full attention and the most from your experience with them. This is why both the yoga and surf sessions will be closed to other participants that have not signed up to this unique retreat in Tamraght, Taghazout Bay, Morocco.
This retreat in Morocco is open to all 18 years of age and above. While some understanding of and previous yoga practice is beneficial, it is not required.
No previous surfing experience is required! Surf lessons will start from the fundamentals if you are a complete novice. If you have some experience surfing, there is also space for you on this retreat as groups can be split accordingly to ability.
While you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic or in tip top shape, the retreat can be physically challenging for some. Being free of injury and illness will allow you to get the most out of this retreat.
Alternatively, if you’re starting your journey, regardless if it’s fitness, surfing, or yoga, they suggest their standard surf and yoga experience to provide a broader yoga experience and slower pace of progression.
Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with asanas (postures) held for longer periods of time than in conventional styles of yoga. The practice of Yin yoga is more specifically based on the Taoist concepts of Yin and Yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature.
Yin yoga also employs specific sequences of postures to stimulate particular meridians as understood in traditional Chinese medicine. These meridians are similar to the Nadis channel concepts used in Hatha yoga.
Some of the aims of Yin yoga are to help stimulate the channels of your body, stimulate circulation, improve joint flexibility and longevity, and help cultivate an inner peace and stillness.
The Yin half of Taoist principles embodies concepts such as stability, the feminine, the passive, and a softness and coolness like a soothing balm to heal and rejuvenate. The Yang half embodies concepts such as instability, turbulence, the masculine, and an active and warm nature that is full of movement, rhythm, and repetition.
With this methodology in mind, the passive yoga asanas are considered Yin, while the more active and dynamic asanas are considered to be Yang. Conventional yoga practices attempt to find a balance between the Yin and Yang, while Yin yoga uses a more meditative approach to focus more on stillness and restoration as an antidote to the flurry of activity generally experienced in your day to day lives.
Although many postures in Yin yoga resemble the asanas of conventional yoga, they have different names. The purpose of this is to remind the yoga practitioner to perform the postures in a different way and achieve the aims of Yin yoga.
As the poses are generally performed with little exertion of the muscles, and the practice itself does not build an inner fire or heat, the environment in which Yin yoga is practiced is typically warmer, making the Moroccan sun the ideal location.
Surfing can be described as an extension of yoga because it requires the same connection of breath, focus, and technique. In surfing, there is equivalent importance to learning how to clear your mind, let go of expectations, and finding a balance in order to feel the most connected with yourself and your surroundings in the present moment.
So if yoga is the “Yin” during the retreat, then surfing is the “Yang”: full of movement, motion, and repetition. In contrast, more strength and effort is required to surf than yoga, awakening your body and mind, providing the opportunity to reconnect with nature and relish in the ocean waves.
Regardless of your surfing experience and ability, at Local Surf Maroc, they will provide you with the same quality of surf lessons that you would expect from their surf coaching, surf mentoring, or surf guiding experiences.
Please note that activities and timings are subject to change based on weather conditions.
Rachid grew up in Taghazout, learning to ride the waves as a child. Having surfed all his life, Rachid knows every surf spot and how the weather conditions can affect each point. Before spending time in England to gain his ISA Surf Coach and Life Guard qualification, Rachid competed in local competitions, becoming a finalist during 2007-2009. Affectionately, Rachid is known as the Surfing Cupid, inspiring beginners to fall in love with the sport, and intriguing those who already love surfing to experience the best of surfing that Morocco has to offer.
The main road of Tamraght and all its amenities are within a 15-20 minute walk from the Riad. There you will find shops, cafes, restaurants, pharmacies, and a currency exchange. A few minutes further from the main streets of Tamraght, you can find yourself at Crocros and Devil’s rock surf spots.
Tamraght itself is on the main road between Agadir and Essaouira, allowing for easy travel and accessibility regardless which airport you fly into. Tamraght is an old Amazigh (Berber) fishing village in Taghazout Bay which is still houses local fisherman today. Over the last few decades the blend of Moroccan and Amazigh culture, fishing industry, and surfing has created a unique vibe in Tamraght and in the other villages in and around Taghazout Bay.
As part of your retreat you’ll be offered three delicious and healthy Moroccan meals a day, with all ingredients sourced fresh and locally. The meals are prepared from scratch in the kitchen, with the smells of cooking from the kitchen wafting into your room to inspire your taste buds.
Moroccan food varies from region to region, with each one having its own specialty or twists on the same dish. In general, Moroccan cuisine is largely meat based, however, these same spice infused dishes are easily adapted to Pescatarian and Vegetarian cuisine.
The tap water in Tamraght is treated and drinkable. However, for your holiday, they recommend to stick with bottled water to avoid any unnecessary symptoms. They provide bottled water on arrival and with meals. Any water, juices, or pop should be purchased at your own expense.
