Program

Why Choose Base Surf Lodge?

Improve your surfing with daily lessons, surf hire, photos and a video coaching session; whilst also having a lovely place to stay, with comfortable accommodation, breakfast of champions and a delicious evening BBQ. What could be better?

Coaching

Rob and Lou are highly experienced surf coaches, with all the knowledge and skills to take your surfing to the next level. Whether you are totally new to surfing or experienced and keen to progress, they guarantee to help you become a better, more well-rounded surfer.

As fully qualified and highly trained surf coaches, they offer you much more than the classic ‘just copy me’ style of lesson. They give each of you in-depth and technical coaching, both on land and in the water. No matter what your level or which movements you may need help with, Rob and Lou are masters of breaking each phase down so you can progress with ease.

Their goal is to share their knowledge of surfing with you and to leave you empowered with valuable life skills. During your surf camp, they will discuss how to safely avoid or manage rip currents. You will learn how the daily surf, tide, and weather conditions affect the waves and how this differs on each beach. Together, they will go through a surf-specific warm-up with basic movement training and breath control. All of this being really important in maintaining a healthy and long-term relationship with surfing.

Arrive

Arrival day is a free day, so you can organise the best travel arrangements that suit you, without any time constraints from us. This also means you can check-in anytime of day with prior notice.

Relax

During your stay at Base Surf Lodge, you will have plenty of free-time to do whatever makes you happiest on your holidays; whether that's relaxing in the sun on the garden sofas, going for a hike along the Cornish coast path, or heading to the beach for another surf.

Surf

Each morning you will have a 2-hour surf lesson, which will include a gentle warm-up, theory and safety on the beach, technique and practice on land and then lots of time in the water for surfing. If you are keen to surf more during your camp you can choose to stay down at the beach after each lesson or even go again in the afternoons.

Surf Spots

Base Surf Lodge is very fortunate to be located only a short walk to both Fistral Beach and Towan Beach in The Bay, which offer a variety of surf conditions.

Free Time

Before and after your surf lessons, you will have plenty of time in the day to explore what else Newquay has to offer. Whether you like heading into town, seeking new adventures or relaxing on the beach the options are endless.

Barbeque

When a little peckish after surfing there are many great places just out the door of the lodge to eat. Just ask Rob and Lou, who will be happy to give you all their recommendations. From local fish to good old fashioned pub grub, Newquay has it all. Plus, on one of your nights, the team will prepare and cook a barbecue for you at the lodge. And not just any barbecue, they will put on a spread!

So go and relax at Base Surf Lodge and give yourself the best opportunity to improve your surfing by joining them on a surf camp this summer.

Levels

New to surfing?

You’ve never surfed before or maybe tried it just a few times and want a total recap. You’ve seen lots of surf schools at the beach but want to make sure you pick the right one. Well, you’ve come to the right place. At Base Surf Lodge our main priority is quality, not quantity. As a small independent surf school, our group sizes are always small too. This allows our surf coaches to really focus on each individual in the group and give tailored feedback. From years of experience, our coaches are masters of being able to adapt their coaching techniques to give each of you your best chance of smooth progression.

Base Surf Lodge will supply you with the perfect beginner surf equipment to get you started. Once you’ve received your wetsuit and surfboard, the equipment is free to use throughout your stay. This gives you the opportunity to stay longer at the beach after your lessons or head back down later in the day if you just can’t get enough. After all, practice makes perfect!

Surfed before?

You’ve surfed a good few times before and have found a new love for the sport. You have pretty much mastered standing up in whitewater and riding to the shore. You’ve seen surfers outback riding along waves and are now super keen to be out there with them.

Base Surf Lodge knows this is such an exciting stage of learning to surf and, as every surfer knows, the first green wave you ride along will be in your memory forever. This is also the most critical time in your surfing career to learn the correct fundamentals. With the right knowledge and skillset, you will be able to progress your surfing safely, effectively, and efficiently, without creating any pesky bad habits.

This is where they come in. In their surf lessons, you will learn proper techniques for paddling out, positioning, wave reading, surfing etiquette, and how to take off on unbroken waves. Get these right and your progress will fly through the roof.

Experienced surfer?

Surfing is no longer just an occasional hobby, it’s sneaking into becoming part of your life. You’ve devoted all holidays to the ocean and can’t stop scrolling surf media. You are starting to catch green waves and ride along in one or maybe both directions already. You may even be able to link some turns but you are super keen to get better and fed up with typical surf lessons being all the same. We hear you! From years of experience working for many surf schools, Base Surf Lodge knows the deal. That’s why they have focussed their energy on creating the perfect intermediate lessons. They've taken inspiration from some of the best: Chris Mills aka Surf Strength Coach; the legend that is Taylor Knox and the surf guru Brad Gerlach (If you haven’t heard of them, look them up as they all have incredible home surf workout programs which definitely complement their coaching).

From constantly training and learning themselves, they are able to adapt our coaching to suit every individual’s learning style and ability. In their lessons, they incorporate a lot of land-based training and basic movement skills. This enables us to consistently practice our surfing without always having to wait for the perfect wave. With this land-based training, they are able to work together and take a closer look at your technique then focus on specific areas of your surfing that need improving. Through taking a deeper look into your own ability, you will also gain valuable knowledge and a much better understanding of why things go well or not so well when in the water.

In each lesson, they use their time in the water to focus on fun practice. They aim to use what they've learned on the beach and put it into practice without putting too much pressure on themselves. The focus is more on combing our knowledge of safety, board control, wave reading, and muscle memory from the beach to select good waves and have fun trying new things.

So whether you are wanting to improve your pop-up, generate speed along with the wave, or perform a solid bottom turn to top turn, they will coach you to become a better surfer.
