What's the best time to go surfing in Manuel Antonio?

The best time to surf in Manuel Antonio is during the major swell on the Pacific Coast, running from May to November. In Manuel Antonio, the mornings are typically offshore, before a sea breeze picks up - so it always pays off to get out of bed early. The months from November to Mid-April are the high season of the country, with mostly warm and sunny days. Although the climate of Costa Rica is humid throughout the year, November to April is the driest months, with clear blue skies, cool nights, lush greenery, and breezy offshore wind.

From the end of April to August, it starts raining more, but mostly in the evenings and nights. With its major swell, smaller crowds, and lower prices, this is a great period to discover this region on a smaller budget and with great surf conditions at the same time. You can expect the rain season to happen between September and October, also named the Green Season. In this time, the jungle is gratefully receiving its much-needed water, making the jungle flourish and come alive. Because of its high water temperature year-round (26-28 C), there’s no need for a wetsuit and you can wear bikinis or boardshorts anytime!

What are the best surf spots in Manuel Antonio?

There are gentle lefts and rights for beginners and intermediates. Experienced surfers challenge river mouth break. Also, there’s Playa El Ray, which provides left- and right-hander waves, and then there’s Playa Manuel Antonio, a spot that is suitable for all levels of surfers. Last, but not least, is Boca Domas - a quiet island where you can experience powerful and strong waves.

From 9-12 pm make sure to find some of the happy hour cocktails at Manuel Antonio Mar Luna, whereafter you can get the bonfire parties and ladies' nights started at El Sol beach.
