Program
You will take part in two days of kite group lessons and three days of surf lessons. A flat water spot and sunny and warm days in Lagos make it the perfect place to learn to kitesurf. With consistent north winds during summer, you can kite almost every day. Work on your water start position on the wake park or catch your first waves surfing. Algarve Watersport got you covered in case of non-windy days. Join daily yoga lessons to stretch sore muscles and find your zen for better progression in kitesurfing. Yoga lessons will happen twice every day (except Sundays).
Kitesurf
The “Nortada” wind is a thermal wind that builds up during the day and reaches its peak in the afternoon. The lagoon is tide dependent offering the easiest conditions for learning at mid tide. Of course, they aim to teach you during these perfect conditions. The kitesurf lessons normally start between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. depending on the best conditions. You will be effectively three hours in the water but the whole trip takes around five hours, with driving down to the lagoon (10-minute drive), setting up the kites, theory, etc.
There is no break in between the course. The kiteboarding instructors are licensed by IKO or VDWS. In the group lesson set up, you will share a kite with another student of your level. There will be maximum 4 students per instructor. At the end, you can acquire your VDWS licence, which is included in the package.
Students will be divided into groups according to kiteboarding level. Please let Algarve Watersport know your level or your last learning objective when you book. Please assess yourself honestly since they only then can match students accordingly and promise fast learning results.
Surf
The surf conditions are consistent all year with Atlantic swells. There are lots of different beaches and reef breaks and a huge swell window on the south and west coasts. There are a great number of beaches and wind-protected bays. The warm climate and the consistent Atlantic swells make it a perfect all-year surfing destination. The summer is great for beginners and intermediate surfers because the waves are not as powerful.
The winter is the best time for seasoned surfers since the ocean delivers strong winter swells which result in wave faces regularly higher than six or eight feet. No surfable waves on the Algarve are a very rare sight. But if wave or weather conditions do not allow you to go surfing, Algarve Watersport will seek to offer you the best alternative of the repertoire, according to the "always action guarantee". You can go kiting, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, or wakeboarding.
Because of the always-changing wave and tide conditions, they only know the exact starting time of the surf lessons one day prior to the lessons. Lessons can take place both in the morning or in the afternoon. The exact timing will be accounced the evening before the course.
The Portuguese beaches are regulated so that the beaches are not overcrowded with too many schools, therefore there is only a specific amount of pupils allowed in the water at the same time. Algarve Watersport is teaching group lessons with ISA (International Surf Association) standards of a maximum of eight people per instructor. Due to the high demand, the capacity does not allow them to give private lessons during the high season.
