You will be staying in Sun Wind Beach Kalpitiya cabanas in single or double occupancy. Sun Wind Beach is owned by Susantha Fernando, Kalpitiya’s first local kitesurfer. It is the only wholly local family-run kite resort in Kalpitiya. All employees are members of the extended family ensuring that income goes back into the local community. This is truly sustainable tourism. The family has resided in Kalpitiya for generations, allowing guests an insight into the area including the best kite spots from local eyes.
The premises has a natural aesthetic and features cabanas made out of coconut and palmyra built by hand by the family. There is an on-site restaurant overseen by Susantha’s mother- a well-known cook in Kalpitiya. The restaurant serves the freshest seafood, vegetable curries, salads, and tropical fruit platters.
There is a well-maintained tropical garden with artworks and an elevated chill-out area. The property is located only 10m from the shores of the Kalpitiya lagoon. There is a small party boat permanently moored to the lagoon that guests can use to watch epic tropical sunsets.
Programme
During the four-day "Kite Learn and Stay" package, you will receive nine hours of beginner kite lessons. All equipment will be provided for the course. You will be transported daily by boat to the sandbar. This package also includes rescue boat service and use of beach huts.
Professeurs
Susantha Fernando
Susantha is the owner of Sun Wind Beach and is Kalpitiya’s first local kiter. Having picked up the sport in 2007, Susantha is legendary in Kalpitiya and is often called "the flying man"! Always with a smile, Susantha is a hardworking and patient instructor with an excellent track record of getting students up and riding in no time. Susantha is a strong proponent of supporting local riders and has been instrumental in teaching his extensive clan of cousins kitesurfing. Safety and having fun on the water (with a smile) is a priority for Susantha’s students.
Lorans
Lorans is Susantha’s only sibling who also operates KKD - the main kite mending business in the local area. Lorans is a gentle, dedicated and capable instructor with great attention to detail.
Juse
Juse is the cousin of Lorans and Susantha and is a strong and talented local kiter. Extremely humble and gentle, Juse’s kite tricks stop people in their tracks in wonderment. He is a patient and dedicated instructor and operates the rescue boat service for Sun Wind Beach. You will feel safe in Juse’s capable hands.

Vella Island full-day kiting tour (most popular)
35 EUR per person, maximum 5 people per boat. Includes: return boat transport, kiting at Vella Island (also known as magic spot), local lunch, snacks and refreshments, full use of the chill-out beach hut, and rescue boat service.
Vella Island overnight kiting tour
80 EUR per person (maximum 5 people per boat). Tour inclusions are the same as the full-day tour PLUS dinner, breakfast, and overnight (tent) accommodation on Vella Island.
Half-day kiting tour
20 EUR per person (maximum 5 people per boat). Includes a visit to Dream Island, refreshments, and snacks
Dolphin watching (Nov to Apr)
20 EUR per person (max 6 per boat). Note: Wildlife Department Pass (10 USD) is additional per person.
Mannar Island
