Professeurs
Jeroen Ruijs
Jeroen was a pilot for Susi Air and flew surfers from all over the world to Simeuleu, a little island of the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. A surfer himself, he tried out many surf spots in Sumatra including Dylans at Simeuleu, an amazing clean right-hander that provides a perfect barrel time and time again. After his first ride, he was hooked and decided he wanted to create a place that would allow him to relax and enjoy the beauty and simplicity of life at Simeuleu with that perfect wave in his backyard.
Lieu
Simeulue is one of those Indonesian islands compelling you to stop on the side of the road at every turn to be mesmerized by the scenery. The island is filled with amazing beaches that are often deserted or in some instances, occupied by some local kids playing in the sand unaware of the pure beauty around them.
In between the beaches, you’ll find little bays with crystal clear water and buffalos hanging around the side of the road. And most importantly, of course, there are some awesome waves to surf on without having 10 guys drop in on you.
Most surf spots are on the south side of the island and are approachable with a motorbike. It will never take more than 30 minutes to get to them but you will often need to do some road exploring - dodging water buffalos along the way - an adventure in itself.
You will be provided with a motorbike to cruise around and explore the other waves on the island. A car can be arranged on request but going around by motorbike is definitely the preferred way to get to the waves. Some waves require a couple of minutes on challenging off road jungle tracks only accessible by motorbike.
Getting around on the island is very easy. The majority of the roads have been newly constructed after the tsunami of 2004. After the tsunami, a lot of NGO’s came down to Aceh Province (Simeulue is part of Bandeh Aceh) to help rebuild the region. You will find a lot of simple houses at the side of the roads and in small villages that were built to aid the local community.
As you explore the island, you will find that the local people are very friendly and welcoming to foreigners as long as you show understanding and respect for their culture.
You will find the fish market in Sinabang where the daily catch is displayed and the local supermarket which sells basic stuff, such as shampoo, toothbrush, soap, etc. Many local hardware stores and little restaurants are found here as well.
