Krui Surf Camp offers 8 brand new air conditioner rooms with en suite western bathrooms, a cozy terrace to relax on, a treehouse looking out over the sea, and as always, lots of great healthy food and a cold Bintang or soda waiting.
Rooms
The camp has 8 brand new air conditioner rooms with two extra-wide single beds and a mosquito net, a board rack and clothes hanger, shelves, and a desk that provides plenty of space for you to stash your gear. All the new rooms offer western-style private bathrooms. The house rooms are homestay style with several shared bathrooms and many of the repeat customers insist on staying close to where the action is, on the wooden framed terrace where all meals are shared and many a late night has been spent.
The camp has several outdoor showers for a quick rinse after a surf or a hot ride. The camp will always think of your comfort and try their best to offer you what you need before you have to ask. The treehouse perched above the tideline serves as an observation platform, a look-out on the waves, and is a favorite for chilling out, reading, taking photos, and yoga practice.
The 24-hour security crew will always be around to look after your boards and bikes and any stuff left out overnight will be put safely into the house or the board bunker in the garage. All guests are always welcome to chill out on the couches and enjoy the classic Sumatran architecture, natural history artifacts, traditional handicrafts, and lending library inside the main house. The camp can also provide an extra bed for any guests wishing to share with a friend.
Transport
Once you are at home in Krui, you will be provided with a motorcycle rental for the adventurous or you can be hooked up with a daily rental car to take you to any of the waves up or down the coast. The drivers know the roads and the waves and will make sure you and all your gear are safe and sound and that there are plenty of cold drinks waiting for you in a shady spot on the beach.
Your host and the local surf guides are always stoked to spend time shooting photos and videos and will often join you on the day trips. Don’t be surprised to have a hot meal waiting after an early morning surf, a hot cup of coffee or tea, or just some water and snacks. Krui Surf Camp focuses on comfort and convenience.
Programme
Welcome to Krui Surf Camp! From the camp's early days in the late 90s up to the present, they have helped thousands of visitors discover the best of the wild, wild west, from the white sand beaches and epic waves along the coast to jungle treks and waterfall tours, Krui Surf Camp knows their way around the area like no one else.
The camp is a family-run business and they live there year-round and always maintain strong ties with the communities up and down the coast. You will be a part of the family and they will help you get the waves you are after and help you explore the inland attractions in comfort and safety.
Please take notice there is no specific check-in and check-out times, meaning these are flexible.
Day 1
At the camp, you will be shown a map around and tell you a short brief so you would know about the waves, crowd, etc.
Day 2-10
If you want to surf early, the guide will take you to the closest spot first, if the wave's good, you can surf or check the other spots. You can get breakfast after a morning surf session then take a break for lunch. After lunch, you can chill while waiting for an afternoon surf session then surf in the afternoon. After surf, get back to the camp and wait for dinner.
You can decide to take one of the local guides, if you want, for a day rate. Some groups might also want to hire a local photographer on a per-day basis to capture some memories of your adventure as you shred the waves, maraud through the coconut plantations, cruise through rice paddies, or take the plunge at a waterfall. If you take a day guide, they will make sure you see the best of the west coast waves and also some of the inland sites as well.
Day 11
Departure from the camp and transfer to the airport.
What are the Waves Like?
The waves along the west coast fall into every imaginable category. There are more than 100 waves in 100 kilometers of the west coast. From long mellow point breaks to fast hollow barrels, heavy beachies, big slabs, river mouth sandbanks, and lots of coral reefs! The west coast of Lampung offers something for everyone. There are plenty of spots for the hard-charging experts as well as smaller mellow waves for groms and beginners. Krui Surf Camp will be happy to advise you on the best spots to fit your personal needs.
Surf Equipment
You must have at least one surfboard but if you didn't bring your own, there is a local surf shop that rents a surfboard.
Professeurs
Zane Redman
Zane has surfed since 1978, it will be his pleasure to welcome you in Krui Surf Camp and assist you during your stay there.
Lieu
Krui Surf Camp is strategically located three kilometers south of Krui and has three waves right out front: Slingshots, The Peak, and LeftOvers aka “the Glory Hole.” It is only one kilometer from the Krui Keyhole and Krui Left and another half kilometer down the beach is Krui Right. The camp is at an equal distance from the bigger rights and lefts to the north and south and their experience with the wave condition will help guide you in the right direction regardless of swell, wind, and tide conditions.
Will the Surf be Crowded?
The Krui Area has become a popular destination in the past decade, so like anywhere in Indonesia during the peak season, June through September, it can become busy. A friendly attitude and mellow vibe always helps in the water. Sumatra is a world away from the chaos found in places like Bali, Lombok, or Sumbawa. With so much varied coastline and good surf, it is still quite possible to get great waves without anyone out, just you and your mates!
How Can You Get Around?
Krui Surf Camp can assist you with a minivan or motorbike rental once you are there. Motorbikes are 80,000 IDR per day and the cars are 750,000 IDR a day, including fuel and driver. Guides are extra but the drivers all know the spots up and down the coast and will be happy to look after your gear while you are in the water.
What are the Locals Like?
The Lampung locals, like most Indonesians, are very friendly and welcoming of guests as long as you remember to respect them. Predominantly Muslim, they are still very traditional in some ways but in no way radical. Islam teaches body modesty so riding around with no shirt on is considered inappropriate.
To respect local traditions when outside the camp, you should dress modestly. Men should wear a shirt and ladies should cover their shoulders and thighs, a loose shirt and a sarong are perfect for a trip to the market. A bikini is definitely not culturally appropriate in public areas.
Like anywhere in Indonesia, keep an eye on your gear when outside the camp. Always be respectful and remember a big smile and a friendly attitude quickly breaks down any language and cultural barriers.
Alcohol and Islam
Alcohol is considered “haram” or forbidden in Islam. It is not a part of everyday life in Lampung. Krui Surf Camp provides cold beer but hard alcohol is not sold; bringing a bottle of your favorite spirits is not a problem but drinking in public is inappropriate. Over-indulgence and public drunkenness are not encouraged. If you want to tie one on, please stay in the camp, Krui Surf Camp loves to party too but keep the vibe is relaxed.
Are there Gift Shops for Souvenirs?
Yes, Krui has some local handicrafts and traditional art to bring home, just ask at the camp and they will help find what you are after.
