Program

Wingfoiling is the new, incredible way to glide over the water - almost to float, an absolutely new feeling of locomotion. It is the logical consequence of surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing, or foil kitesurfing.

The unique feeling of wingfoiling has convinced many water sports enthusiasts. Also, its use of the lowest wind range makes wing foiling an alternative in the light wind range, starting already from 10 to 12 knots.

Your wing will be ready for use in just a few minutes: inflate and off you go. You will stand or kneel on a large hydrofoil board. In both hands, you will hold the wing - the inflatable kite - which will float without pressure even in light winds. Place the wing in the wind and generate lift and propulsion. Then, you’ll already be moving on the water.

With the foil board, a board with a hydrofoil construction underwater, you will start planing very early and as soon as you have reached a certain speed, your board will detach itself from the water's surface. Suddenly, everything will become very quiet and light. You will then lift off the water and seem to float with your board in the air.

Normally, beginner wingfoil or windsurfing classes are done in the small lagoon of Alvor, which will give you a great sense of security to learn your favorite sport. Intermediate and advanced level classes, including foil windsurfing, are held in Meia Praia, always with the support of a boat due to offshore wind.

Advantages vs. kitesurfing:

Wingfoil has become the new way to enjoy the wind and the sea in recent years. Wind Sports Center Algarve leaves you a small list of advantages that wingfoil offers over kitesurfing. They are not saying that neither is better than the other, since both offer unique sensations and, each in their own way, they are incredible sports that you can become addicted to.

Freedom

Kitesurfing requires specific conditions and an adapted and safe place to launch the kite, so you must be in the right place and have someone to lift your kite. On the other hand, the wingfoil can be mounted and navigation can start from practically anywhere, always taking into account the level of the practitioner.

Greater wind range

The advantage of being able to unwind the wing so easily allows one to fly with a four-meter wing in winds from 12 or 13 knots to 35 knots.

Safety in strong wind

With the wingfoil, when a very strong gust hits you and you release the back hand or both, it loses all the force and you will never be in danger of flying away.

The delicate flow

The wing was created to blend with the foil. Together, they give a feeling of fluidity, smooth navigation, tranquility, calm, and freedom. It is a navigation that can be super relaxing and with light winds.

If the wind goes away

If the wind suddenly stops and you are very far from the coast with your kite, you have to try to return with a large piece of equipment and a board that does not float, in addition to having to know self-rescue techniques to prevent the kite from taking you adrift. You’ll be in real trouble. With the wingfoil, you will just have to tie or deflate the wing and paddle back.

Downwinds

The advantage of wingfoil comes with the issue of organization. In kitesurfing, you can do a 15-kilometer downwind, but you will need someone to pick you up upon arrival.

The advantage of the wingfoil is that you can do several downwinds in the same session since the foil, having less friction than a board, will allow you to sail upwind with an efficiency that kitesurfers would never imagine.

How to learn:

Wind Sports Center Algarve will explain it to you in a simple way. The process is usually divided into three days. Every day, you will learn new concepts and put into practice the concepts already learned. Once you have completed the three days of the course, you will be able to do your first pitches but you will not be independent.

1. First day - Basic notions

On this day, you will start with a brief theoretical part. Next, you will learn how to assemble the wing and control it in the sand. You will end up sailing on a large volume paddle.

2. Second day - Foil contact

You will learn how to ride the foil and you will put into practice what you learned in the first class on a specific board for wingfoil. You will then have the first sensations with the foil.

3. Third day - Improvement

Wind Sports Center Algarve will help you perfect your foil technique, set courses, and try your first transitions.

Gear

To start in this sport, volume is the key aspect. More board volume will provide more buoyancy, and a foil with more surface area will be more stable once in flight. The following are the recommended wingfoil equipment for initiation:

  • A 120L board, minimum 6′ (length and width)
  • A wing of 5m2 - the size of the wing decreases as the force of the wind increases, while remaining in relation to the weight of the user
  • A foil with a medium mast of about 75 cm and a foil wing of between 2000 and 2500mm2 will facilitate getting out onto the water, in almost flat water, but without much speed

Wind Sports Center Algarve will provide you with the key information that you will need to make informed decisions and accelerate your wingfoil progress. Wingfoil has seen a surge in popularity thanks to advances in hydrofoils. Choosing the right equipment makes a difference in your speed of progression.

Crucial equipment details:

Wing sizes

Wind Sports Center Algarve recommends starting with a four or five-meter wing, depending on your weight. A typical mistake is being afraid of using a slightly larger wing size that will propel you more. This makes getting on the board and getting off the foil much easier than if you use a slightly smaller wing.

Hydrofoils

The wing surface affects glide speed and stability. Choose according to your level; the large ones are ideal for beginners (between 2,000 and 1,200). These will provide great stability on the foil and on the board, but will sacrifice a little of your maximum speed.

On the other hand, smaller wings are more unstable when you are going slow and learning to control the foil but they become more stable when you go faster.

Mast length

A length of 70 cm is excellent for learning. Adjust according to your preference between stability and maneuverability. Unlike hydrofoil, masts are more stable when they are shorter, but they reduce maneuverability. For more advanced riders, masts between 85 to 95 cm are recommended.

Table considerations

Tables are measured in liters and choosing the right one is crucial. Calculate your weight in kilograms and add 30 to 40 to obtain proper flotation. Don’t rush to size down. A larger team speeds up progression.

Although wingfoiling may seem effortless, patience and determination are key to mastering the art of flight over water.

Schedule

On the first day, Wind Sports Center Algarve will do a small questionnaire to understand the level of the student and what he or she wants to learn or improve, then they choose the right equipment and start the adventure at the lagoon.

At the end of the class, the student will be evaluated to understand what was his or her progress and prepare for the next days of class, which will be scheduled immediately. The process will continue for the following days until the end of the course.
