The word "Valampuri" in the Tamil language means "Left Spiral". It describes a rare shell, one in a million, which uniquely spirals counter-clockwise. Hindus believe it brings wealth and success.

These are the ideas, Valampuri Resort had in mind when creating their eco-resort: learning from nature's wisdom, finding a unique path and forming a space that allows the visitor to spiral inwards.

Valampuri Resort's cabins look similar from the outside, but inside each one is uniquely designed, combining natural, locally-sourced, recycled materials and traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship. They are not sealed off from the outside - nature is invited to come in.

All the cabins and huts are located in a property of 2.5 acres. This keeps the space calm and peaceful, perfect for yoga and meditation practice, or just lazing around.

Valampuri Resort serves food in its seafood restaurant. Valampuri Kite Resort offers a gentle fusion of Sri Lankan and western dishes, made with fresh, locally grown ingredients. Valampuri Resort is vegetarian-, vegan-, raw-vegan- and gluten-free-friendly.

Valampuri Resort's staff members are all from the surrounding communities, and they are committed to their personal and professional development.

Sustainable goals

An Eco-Resort Based on Recycled Material

Whenever Valampuri Kite Resort could, they used local and discarded material to build their property. Many of their tables from old palettes and Kohomba (Margosa) tree, and chairs from leftover woods. Valampuri Resort's secluded cabanas are nestled among tall coconut trees that ensure shade and tropical landscape. The Palmyra leaves surround the cabanas for added privacy, and thatch coconut leaves cover the roofs. Roof structure allows the cooling wind to enter and ventilate the rooms, reducing the need for ventilation or AC to the minimum. As a trial period, they are going to plant fresh veg in their resort

Leverage Natural Solar Energy

Currently, the resort is fully powered from the city grid. To change this into a more sustainable source, This will allow Valampuri Resort to be off the grid during the day, powering lights and other small appliances, internet, kitchen, cabanas, and to some extend hot water in most showers, and more. Basically everything except for AC.

Recycle, Reuse, Reduce - Repeat

It has been hard to combine Valampuri Resort's ethical beliefs and business, they are satisfied with the result and they currently recycle food waste to feed local animals, practice trash can separation and bring plastic containers to the recycling. Valampuri Resort's new pool uses a salt water chlorination system to reduce the use of chemicals.

Valampuri Resort's water filtration system to allow the guests to refill the provided glass containers that will eliminate plastic bottles in their resort. Laundry uses a lot of water electricity, microfibers are a big issue in the waster system; hence Valampuri Resort changes sheets every two days. Valampuri Resort bans the use of strews, reduce the use of plastic. Valampuri Resort uses energy efficient lighting and the lights are kept to a minimum after everyone goes to bed. They use groundwater and filter for general use. Their hand-picked garden plants don't need to be watered often in dry seasons

Support the Local Community

Valampuri Resort operates local first preference. All most all of the staff come from the local village, within one km; Valampuri Resort trained them and helped them to become steward, supervisor, and pool manager. All their food is sourced from the local fishermen, as well as local vegetables and fruits.

The local villagers lead the tours and activities Valampuri Resort offers to their guests. They only outsource when competence or availability requires it. Support local community handy craft, they have a gift shop that sells bracelets, chain ear studs made out of seashells
