Beginner surf lessons

At Una Ola surf school, they begin your first surf lesson by teaching you the basics of surfing such as, water safety, surfing etiquette, wave dynamics, how to paddle a surfboard, how to catch a wave, as well as how to stand up and ride a wave on a surfboard. Each daily surf lesson starts with a dynamic stretching routine to prepare your muscles and joints for the tasks to follow.

Once your body is warmed up, they move on to teaching you practical surfing skills in bite size chunks, making the lessons easier for you to process and learn. Every lesson is hands-on with their highly qualified surf instructors. All surfing instructors are approved by the Costa Rican Surfing Federation, ILS Lifesaving qualified, Red Cross and ISA (level 1, 2, and 3) trained and certified.

Guided surf tours

For experienced surfers, you can join Una Ola and their daily-guided tours to the best waves in Costa Rica. They only use experienced Costa Rican surfing guides and their local knowledge will help you find the best waves to surf each and every day. Una Ola are located on one of the best and most consistent surf breaks in Costa Rica, so you usually don’t have to go very far to find good waves.

There are always waves to ride in Costa Rica it never goes flat. The daily surf trips take you to many well-known surf spots such as, Pavones, Cabo Matapalo, Punta Banco, Dominical, Playa Hermosa, Esterillos, Playa Negra, Playa Avellanas, Playa Tamarindo, Playa Langosta, and Playa Grande, as well as many lesser-known surf breaks. This way, you and your friends can score great waves without the crowds.

Una Ola Surf Camp is located in Pavones, Costa Rica, just down the road from the the world famous Pavones surf break. They are one kilometer just south of the Rio Claro, right next door to Casa Siempre Domingo and just steps from Punta Pina.

Driving directions from Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO)

  • Head west out of San Jose on highway 3.
  • Highway 3 will then merge onto highway 27, take highway 27 west for a little while then take highway 34 South.
  • Highway 34, also known as the coastal highway, will pass over the famous Tarcoles River (great stop to see the huge crocodiles under the bridge) and many popular beach towns such as Jaco, Playa Hermosa, Manuel Antonio, and Dominical.
  • After about five hours, you will reach a town called Palmar Norte. This is where you will want to fill up on gas since there are on gas stations in Pavones.
  • You will then want to take a right (south) at this intersection which then will become the inter-American highway (highway 2). Proceed along this road towards Rio Claro.
  • Once you arrive in Rio Claro, you want to take a right at the main intersection in town, heading towards Golfito (highway 14).
  • After about 10 kilometers, you want to make a left turn at the Salon El Rodeo (Rodeo Bar). If you reach Golfito, you have gone too far.
  • The road from here to Pavones is paved with lots of potholes until you reach the bridges at Rio Coto. Once across, the road is unpaved all the way to Pavones.
  • About two kilometers after crossing the bridge, you will come to a small town. Going left and then right around the soccer field. This is Pueblo Nuevo.
  • Continue for another two kilometers then make a quick right (look for the Pavones sign).
  • You will drive for about another hour when you approach a town called Conte, take a right after you pass the school, following the signs to Pavones.
  • There is a Y intersection in the road just past Conte, take a left. Follow the road and signs to Pavones.
  • Once you arrive in Pavones, turn left at the intersection where the ferreteria (hardware store) and local grocery market are. Go to the past the cell phone tower (which is on your left) and go over the wooden bridge at the Rio Claro (Pavones surf break).
  • Veer to your left at the intersection just after the bridge and continue on to the end of this road (approximately one and a half kilometers).
  • Pass the walled compound on your left and the road will drop down and back up as you cross La Pina creek.
  • Continue for 300 meters until just past Casa Siempre Domingo to the end of the road.
  • Look for the Una Ola sign, because you are already here! Una Ola are on the left side of the road.

Driving directions from Golfito Airport (GLF)

  • You will want to take a right once you exit the airport (note that this a one way only). Follow this street around the Samsung Market District until you are heading southwest through Golfito.
  • You will pass the town of Golfito and follow the road (highway 14) towards Rio Claro.
  • Approximately 11 kilometers out of Golfito, you will see the Salon El Rodeo (Rodeo Bar) on the right hand side. Take this right. If you reach Rio Claro, you’ve missed this turn off and you need to turn around.

  • Look for the Una Ola signs. They are on the left side of the road.
