Guests of Umma Maonu will stay in the traditional Mentawai Umma or two cozy chalets situated amongst the coconut tree forest. All of the houses are built from locally sourced material and recycled wood is used where possible.

The Umma

The Umma has 2 bedrooms, each bedroom can accommodate 2 people. It houses the main dining, lounge, and bar areas as well as a large socializing space for you to enjoy drinks, music, and food to keep you fueled after a long day of surfing.

The Chalets

The two chalets are situated away from the main house and entertainment area to ensure maximum privacy. The first chalet can accommodate 3 people and the second bungalow can accommodate up to 5 people. There are a shared bathroom and toilet in the chalets, but they have their own shower areas.

All rooms are provided with bath towels. There are no hot showers on the island. Shower water may smell a little as it has sulfur in it but this is regarded as very healthy for your skin and hair. The rooms will be cleaned daily by the staff. There is music system available.

The island has three amazing waves on the outer reefs. With the right swell and wind conditions, there are seven waves that you can surf regularly that are on a world class level. There’s also a chance for a bit of exploration with hidden gems that have never been surfed before, giving you the opportunity to score the best waves of your life.

When you’ve snagged enough waves here, it’s time to venture into the surf playgrounds of the Mentawai’s. With waves including Rifles, Hideaways, Bank Vaults, E-Bays, and A-Frames. Umma Maonu Mentawai Surf and Tribe has access to a large variety of waves for all surfing levels. All waves are accessible by boat unless you are paddling out front for an early morning session. It is not recommended for beginner to learn to surf in Mentawai.

On your surfing holiday, your typical day will include:

  • Wake-up at whatever time you want.
  • For those who want to hit the waves early, you can have your breakfast on the boat. If you want to chill out in the morning, you can have breakfast at the camp with tea and coconut before heading out to find some waves.
  • If the waves are hitting the island or nearby, you can surf until you’re tired and head back to the camp for lunch and chill. Once you are recharged, you can back out to hit the surf.
  • If you’re heading to the outer islands in the morning, you will have to leave early morning and lunch will be served on the boat or in one of the local villages before heading back out.
  • At 18:00, you will head back to camp to enjoy a feast and cold beers while watching a breathtaking sunset.

Umma Maonu Mentawai Tribe and Surf authentic camp is based on Maonu Island which is situated at the most northerly wave in the playgrounds region. The Mentawai Islands are a premier surfing destination that offers world famous waves. Their exposure towards the Southern Indian Ocean provides unbelievable waves all year round.

Maoni Island is the ultimate surfer’s paradise. Half of the island is white sand beach surrounded by a flat water atoll and the other half is mangrove forest which is ideal for exploring on canoes. Across the water is mangrove forest with a small river - ways that lead into the tropical rainforest on Siberut Island. The island is secluded from other resorts scattered across the area.
