TurfnSurf Lodge is located in the centre of Bundoran town, county Donegal; overlooking beautiful Donegal Bay and the world famous surf spot - ‘The Peak’. TurfnSurf Lodge was established in 2006 but the building has a much longer history. The building was built in the Victorian era (circa1890) and in the style of seaside townhouses of that time. This great building has been a resting place for visitors to the town since the 1940s. Today it is a lodge and activity center providing customers with clean, comfortable, and affordable accommodation. It is the centre of all they do at TurfnSurf and everyone is welcome to call in say hello, sit outside and watch the sunset while having a cup of tea (or maybe something stronger!). They pride themselves on a warm welcome and a comfortable stay for all their customer

If you want to learn how to surf, TurfnSurf can show you how. You do not need to be an expert in the water. All you need is to have a sense of adventure and a basic level of fitness and swimming ability. Their surf lessons are all done by trained instructors with beach lifeguard qualifications and lessons take place in a safe environment. Their instructors’ aim is to tailor the lesson to the participants’ abilities, keep you safe, and make sure you have fun. All equipment is provided and you’ll be transported to the best beach for learning to surf in one of their Land Rover Defenders. Bundoran is an excellent place to learn to surf.

  • Gather at the lodge and meet your instructor(s)
  • They’ll size you for wetsuits and other equipment
  • You can then change in changing rooms at the lodge
  • Transport from the lodge to the beach in one of their Land Rovers
  • On the beach your instructor(s) will do a land drill. This means going through the main points of surfing (about 15 minutes)
  • Next into the water for about one and a half to two hours learning to surf with hands on tuition from your instructor(s)
  • Ratio of students to instructor is eight to one
  • Out of the water, into the Land Rovers and then back to the lodge
  • Change out of your wetsuit in our changing rooms at the lodge
  • Tea, coffee, and biscuits back in the dining room at the lodge

TurfnSurf is located in the heart of Bundoran town, which is situated in the south west of county Donegal. Eating out - Mullaghmore

Brennan’s Criterion Bar

Sisters Nan and Pat have been running Brennan’s Criterion Bar (to give it the full name) for more years than they care to remember. Forget the pastiche, pretend old bars of Dublin’s Temple Bar, this bar is truly an authentic, old fashioned Irish bar. The walls, ceilings chairs and bar counter are original, old and well kept. Perhaps the best pint of Guinness in town, it’s the place for long conversations and mellow evenings with friends.

Bundoran Cinema

Bundoran Cineplex is located beside Lidl supermarket at the rear of the Main Street. It offers six screens with the most recent movie releases. To find out what’s con click on their website Bundoran Cineplex

Coastal walks - Rougey and West-end

They are lucky in Bundoran to have a view of the sea 365 days a year. Take one of the great coastal walks along Rougey Cliffs or along the West End and look upon the panoramic views of Donegal Bay. You can go for just 10 minutes or two hours but they will not fail to impress. You will see Slieve League Cliffs on the other side of the bay. Supposedly the highest sea cliffs in Europe! Look west and you can see Mullaghmore headland, the home of Classie Bawn Castle. Turn north and look upon the Bluestack Mountains stretching along behind Donegal Town.

Madden’s Old Bridge Bar

This is the unofficial surfer’s bar in Bundoran. Run by the Madden family, it’s a great place for delicious bar food and a drink. They’ve a whole range of craft beers including beers from the Donegal Brewing Company, located only 10 kilometers down the road. There’s weekly traditional music sessions in Madden’s Bar along with other music events. Call in and ask them what’s going on.

There are three nightclubs in Bundoran; Paris nightclub on the Main Street, Jumpin Jacks located in the basement of the Holyrood Hotel and Boom Boom nightclub located on Astoria Road.

The Chasin’ Bull

The Doherty family have been at the helm of this bar known locally as “The Bull”. They offer lots of live music events from late week to Sunday. It’s also the place to go for the big sporting events. A relaxing bar during day and rockin’ at night.

The Kicking Donkey

You won’t find it hard to find “The KD” (Kicking Donkey). It’s the one with the big donkey stuck to the wall outside! This is another music and sports bar, it is actually two bars. George’s Bar is a favourite of locals looking to catch up on the news, play pool and watch the football. The KD is a lively music venue at night.

The Aparthotel

Ask TurfnSurf if there is anything going on in the Aparthotel. During summer months they have bands play and there have been many lively nights had there. A friendly and welcoming bar.

"The location was peaceful and gorgeous! With a window view onto the mountain, which surprisingly was covered in snow. Our arrival on Friday evening was quite late, however we were warmly welcomed and given a key to our house for the weekend. The house had three bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and few bathrooms. Perfect for a group of 7/8. We received a good variety of food options for breakfast time, this included cereal, breads and digestives, along with jam and butter. The house was spotless, with two towels on each bed. The beds were very comfortable and we had good two night sleeps. Wardrobes were huge which would be very beneficial for a longer stay. And overall the house was spacious and comfortable. The surfing was incredible, coached by enthusiastic, chill but experienced people which were able to give one on one guidance to all levels of surfing. The sessions were educational and again the location made the whole experience magical, just beautiful! All transport was provided to the surfing lessons and back to home, and the overall program was well organised and great fun. I would defiantly come back."

"We booked the Wild Ireland tour with the TurfnSurf team and it was definitely a great decision. Even if we were off season, they did everything they could to make it happen (thanks Killian!). Our guide, Bryan, is one of the friendliest person we ever met. We had a lot of fun (''great craic'', as we learn to say!) and we absolutely recommend this experience. This five days tour includes all the transport, the activities, the lodging and some surprising stops. We slept for two nights at the TurfnSurf Hostel and it was cosy, clean, well situated right across the beach and every member of staff was friendly. We had a good time. Also, the surf session was amazing, even if we did not get the best weather, it was one of the highlights of our trip!"

"Our two daughters, (aged 11 and 14) had only surfed once before (somewhere a lot warmer) but the friendly and helpful staff at TurfnSurf assured us that they would be properly equipped and therefore fine to surf in the Atlantic in March! They were right, kitted out in winter wet suits with hoods, gloves and shoes, the girls were in the water for over an hour on each of their two surf lessons and had a fantastic time. The staff were friendly, fun, and extremely patient and both girls were standing up and very pleased with themselves at the end of each session. The locations (Tullan Strand and Rossnowlagh beaches) were perfect for surfers and spectators alike - the scenery is stunning. And if you're a parent onlooker at Rossnowlagh, we highly recommend a pint of Guinness at the nearby Smuggler's Creek Inn."

"I really needed to unplug from work and go on relaxing trip. Yep, this did the trick. Honestly, the view from my room alone was worth the affordable price. The transportation, food, equipment and lessons were endless value-adds. And the staff was super helpful, nice and outgoing (which is sometimes rare in the surf world). Many people were paddling out for their first time. It was amazing to see everyone up and riding on waves throughout the weekend. The instructors really did a great job. And lastly, life at the lodge was perfect. Chocolate party, decent breakfasts, great conversation, And the music was amazing: Dylan, Lumineers, Leadbelly, Alt-J. Just my cup of tea. This package is a great combination of adventure and scenic relaxation. I can't recommend it highly enough."

"I had a great time time at TurfnSurf. The surf lesson was so much fun. The instructors were very patient and helpful. After the lesson they welcomed us back with tea, coffee and biscuits. The dorm was clean and I slept very well. Our roommates were very friendly and we hung out with them the entire weekend. The direct bus from and to Dublin was very convenient. I had never surfed before, but they definitely got me on board. I will definitely go again. TurfnSurf is a fun, social environment; perfect for meeting new people and having a adventurous weekend"
