Beginner (level 1)

Never surfed before? No problem! Jah Shaka Surf's highly experienced team of Instructors will give you the confidence and training to take your first steps and have you up and riding in no time. They have developed their surf lessons based around the ASI and ISA training centers to ensure you get the most out of your week in the water. With two coastlines to explore, they will nearly always find fun sized waves that are perfect for beginners, ensuring your first experience in the water is a great one.

Beginner and intermediate (level 2)

If you've been on a couple of surf holidays before and have grips with the basics and want to progress, their level 2 surf lessons are great for giving you the advice and coaching you need to get out of the white water and into your first green waves. They also focus on making you a more complete surfer now that you're wanting to go 'out back', teaching the essential rules every surfer needs to know about surf etiquette, safety and rips, and the right equipment for you.

Intermediate and green wave riders (level 3)

If you're already catching small green waves, feel relatively confident in the water, but still aren't sure how to choose the best and safest spot to surf - want to understand wave forecasting, want to improve your wave count, pop up, and learn your first turns - the perfect course for you is Jah Shaka Surf's intensive intermediate surf course; green wave riders. Weeks run every April and October or November, have a high focus on video coaching, and course mates will be of a similar surfing ability to yourself.

Intermediate and advanced (level 4)

This course is designed for surfers that have a good pop up, the beginnings of good turns, and maybe a cut back here or there. This course teaches better duck diving technique, body position, speed, control, and a variety of other techniques once again backed up with a heavy focus on video coaching. The advanced surf coaching weeks run in April and October or November.

Waves and beaches

The surf lessons are located among some of Europe's most beautiful and cleanest beaches and being in the Algarve, having two coastlines so close together to choose from, sets them apart from any other surfing destination in Europe. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, Jah Shaka Surf offers access to some of the best and most consistent waves in Portugal virtually all year round.

This area is known for always having a wave to surf somewhere due to the vast selection of beaches. Jah Shaka Surf can't always guarantee perfect surf, but 365 days a year they're so sure they'll find something to surf while you're there that they offer your full money back for the day if they have not managed to get you surfing at least once. When other European destinations go flat, this area of Portugal always has waves!

Bursting with sunshine and known for its laid back lifestyle, the western Algarve is the perfect holiday destination to unwind and recharge with some deserved rest and recuperation. Whether you achieve this by exploring the fantastic culture and un-spoilt countryside, chilling out, and catching some waves at some of Europe's most stunning beaches, or want to find adventure taking part in the endless outdoor activities on offer, the choice is yours.

Well away from the main stream eastern Algarve international tour operators, the west has largely stayed underdeveloped and still retains its natural charm. Traveling just half an hour from either the south or west coast up through the countryside to the Monchique mountain at 1000 meters, the whole area is speckled with small villages and towns with one foot in past.

You can find traditional coffee shops, bakers, fresh produce from local producers, and artisan craftsmen all selling their wares. Don't miss out on the local cuisine of this area either with a cataplana (fresh fish stew), barbecued sardines, and a pastilla de nata for dessert.

"It is a beautiful lodge with loads of hangout areas, creating a home feel atmosphere in the heart of nature, whether you are in a room or a Tipi. The staff is excellent and whether you are a solo traveler or not, you will feel at home. Food is great too, and they have catered for my vegan lifestyle, providing meals with the fresh produce of Portugal. The surfing instructors are very professional and they truly love teaching it. It was my first experience with surfing and I have learned so much that I am tempted to give up everything and embrace this awesome lifestyle after this experience! Last but not least, I highly recommend taking a morning or afternoon yoga class every day as it is so good for your body and soul. Namaste! Well done for the Jah Shaka Team."

"I spent a week in September 2016 surfing with Jah Shaka at their Tiny Whale lodge. The whole trip was great from start to finish, the staff were friendly, the surf was great, the food was top, and the instructing was attentive. No complaints. I was slightly apprehensive prior to going as this was a first time traveling solo if there's anyone in a similar position there's nothing to worry about. There are many solo travelers there and the staff are very welcoming."

"The place we stayed is called Tiny Whale not Jah Shaka as advertised, not sure why. Overall it is a lovely backpackers and surf camp. I did not like the fact that is 15-minute out of town, but it was nice coming home to a peaceful garden setting and big pool. We stayed in the tipis, very cool, comfortable beds and cool in evening. Shared outside bathroom not that great, most of the time dirty. We had the delicious barbecue on Friday nights. I think if the cool surfer staff working at the lodge worked a bit more and looked better after the place. it would def be a 5-star. Owners, on the other hand, is great and were super nice hosts. Thanks, Neil and Marta, all the best!"

"I borrowed a stand-up paddleboard from this shop for ten days in July. I had emailed them prior to my trip and Richard was very accommodating about my request. The price of the rental was even discounted. When I got to the shop, the crew were very helpful and friendly. Since I had rented a paddleboard from them, I was able to explore the coastlines and coves of Praia do Porto de Mos, Praia do Camilo, and Ponta da Piedade on my own over several days, first thing in the morning, before the kayaking tours descended on these places. Thank you very much, Jah Shaka for enabling my SUP adventures!"

"I spent a week glamping with Jah Shaka Surf Lodge in Lux Portugal and I was impressed with the friendliness and quality of their offering. The accommodations were excellent and the food was nothing short of delicious, Thai food was probably the best I have ever tasted. Yoga was run in-house, Wi-Fi, and pool. The staff and instructors were delightful and could not be more helpful. If you want to surf or just chill, I could not recommend them more."

Good prices for making the most of your stay to explore and have your own adventures. They also offer many tour and adventure, as well as a surf camp, which I am sure would also be fully worth it!"

"I just got back from a week and it was an absolute thumper of a week. I booked a shared room but ended up getting a double room to myself. The green wave rider instructors were Jan and Henry. Both of them are absolute gents and excellent teachers. From a surfing perspective, I learned a lot over the course of the week and my skills definitely improve. By the end of the week, I was consistently riding down the line of the wave, something that I have been struggling with for ages (years actually). The week really puts the fun back into surfing and I am already planning my next surf trip. The food at the lodge was extremely tasty and there was plenty of it. It was well worth eating there in the evenings too. On top of all this, there was plenty of time to cut loose and bust out some serious shapes, whether at the lodge or on the streets of Lagos. Not a week I will forget soon, the Friday night was epic! My expectations were more than exceeded. Big up to dangerous Dave, Jacob the bar wizard, and everyone else at the lodge."

"This company was very helpful when trying to book a kayaking trip. Unfortunately, the sea was too rough to kayak and we were reassured that the trip was canceled (despite other companies prepared to take customers out to sea). The trip was re-scheduled, but we were unable to go a second time due to the weather. We were given a full refund. All the staff we spoke to were friendly and attentive. This place is highly recommended."

"As a new surfer, I wanted to progress, so I booked last minute to go to Jah Shaka for 7 nights and surf every day there. Rorii and Fabby were great in looking after me from arrival to departure and were really helpful and friendly. The surf lessons were great, all good surf instructors, friendly and fun all the time and your safety are clearly paramount. I had a number of different instructors for the surfing days I spent there as they swap round groups and work rotas daily and can say that I learned different things from all the instructors, didn't have a bad or unfriendly instructor at any time. Special mention to Charlie, George, and Seb, who are superb instructors. Honestly, ignore any bad review on here on this place, you get people who just like to moan in all walks of life. Would recommend Jah Shaka to anyone, superb staff, nice vibe, and great value. I will definitely back."

"I visited Jah Shaka in October. In fact, I am leaving today, which I am frankly gutted about! As I was traveling solo, I was a tad anxious, but from the moment I arrived, I was made to feel extremely welcome and at ease. The hostess gave me a tour, explained how my surfing lessons would be arranged, and introduced me to everyone, including most of the instructors and guests who couldn't have been nicer. There is such a warm and chilled out atmosphere and I have felt extremely comfortable from the start. I had booked into a shared dorm, which was clean with comfortable beds and an en-suite bathroom. The breakfast provided each morning outside was brill, with everything you could want to set you up the for the day. Again, the hosts always made sure we had enough of everything and we are always on hand and more than happy to help with any requests. The pool area and large living room are great for chilling out in and the Wi-Fi is brill. As for the surfing, it was amazing! All of the instructors are fab, making sure you get the most out of the lessons and always there to help and provide tips and advice while you are in the water. Also, just a great bunch of guys who were fun to hang with. I can't believe how far I have come in just 5 days of learning! So basically, if you want a surfing holiday, I would recommend Jah Shaka without hesitation. I have had an amazing time, met really great people, and learned how to surf, what could be better! Thanks to all the guys there and I will most definitely be back as soon as I can for some more good times!"

"I visited Jah Shaka quite recently and had the best time, I could not have asked for a more chilled and smooth holiday, just what you need when you have been working in an office for too long time! The people, surf, and yoga were amazing and the weather just topped it off! I never usually read or leave reviews, but from reading the negative ones I was shocked. The staff and surf instructors could not have been more friendly, they let you play your own music in the vans on the way to the beach, which gets everyone in a great mood for the rest of the day! The staff were always there to ask questions and very helpful, they even did my dirty clothes washing. For surfing you get put into groups of experience, I had never surfed before and by the end of the week, I could just about stand, that was an achievement for me, but I could not have done it without my instructors help. Thanks! Being at Jah Shaka was like being at home, people around all the time. I have met some great people here from all different places. Some were couples, friends, people traveling solo, and the Jah Shaka spirit just brings everyone together! Everything was made clear from emails and photos, it was just what I expected and more. Thanks again for a super fun holiday!"
