A long drive north from San Juan del Sur but well worth it! We were greeted by a awesome staff, that spoke perfect English, had a great time, the room was very clean, being right on the beach, tons of great surf, great service,AWESOME food,I could go on and on. If you are visiting Northern Nicaragua,Thunderbomb is a must go! I live here in Nicaragua, don't miss out !!!!
One of the best experiences of the whole three months I've been staying in Nicaragua. A couple of my friends and I drove about six hours north of San Juan Del Sur which is where I currently am living to stay a couple days at Thunderbomb. I never wanted to leave! From the incredible food, infused rum, tentative staff, gorgeous accommodations and amazing waves this is somewhere I definitely plan on going back to! They keep you entertained while the waves are low tide and also have options of going out with the boat to find and catch the swells off shore! I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys feeling as if they have found heaven on earth! The staff took us out surfing and drove to a couple spots to see which swells we were keen on. I have never felt so much at home as I did at Thunderbomb. The only bad part of this trip was driving away from it when we were leaving! Do yourself a favor and check it out for yourself you will be beyond thankful you did !!!

He: 41 years old. Works in service industry. Some surfing experience. Hot Buttons: great service, good food, prefers non-touristy destinations
She: 50 years old. 20 years management experience in luxury hotels. Former fine dining restaurant manager. No surfing experience. Hot Buttons: great service, authentically local experiences, good food, non-touristy destinations
If we could give 6 out of 5 as our score for this experience, we would, and here's why:
- there is something nearby for all skill levels
- uncrowded beaches
- as beginners, the pure sand bottom at our beach was a huge positive
- the water felt as warm as the air
- the Thunderbomb team is really great at trying to get you on the water for as long as possible and are very flexible if you want to call it a day
- the staff outnumber the guests, which is a rare thing!
- We felt like royalty. German and Oscar in particular went above and beyond to ensure our comfort on the waves and with our experience in general for the whole week. These two individuals are incredibly talented and lovely people who are very focused on doing the best job that they can.
- we are 'foodies' and have to say that Oscar cooked up a storm! Best food by far that we had during our 3 weeks in Nicaragua. Some of the best food that we have had in general at restaurants in Canada. You will not go hungry.
- the house is literally on the beach
- the grounds are well taken care of
- the rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable. Nothing beats that lovely smell of fresh laundry!
- you are in farmland so it is quiet, except for the rolling waves and occasional nature sounds
- all the staff are calm, relaxed and very kind
- the place is tricky to find on your own, or for a cab driver. No road signs and no addresses to be found. Best to ask Jonathan for directions in advance if you are driving on your own, if not, Jonathan does include airport pick up and drop off in your package
- bring some cash in case you want to tip anyone, or to buy ice cream down the road. The house is in a remote area with no nearby bank machines
- bring zinc for your face!!! 37 degrees Celcius and pure sun for our full vacation. Our 60 SPF just didn't do the job when we were in the water for hours at a time
A very memorable experience. Thank you Jonathan and the Thunderbomb Superstars!

I couldn't be happier about my week at Thunderbomb with Jonathan and company. I am an advanced beginner or maybe intermediate surfer and Jonathan and the two primary surf guides, Herman and Oscar, took me to the right waves at the right times (and tides) so that I was really able to advance my surfing this past week. I've never been on waves this good with so few surfers out in the water, and with so much individual attention from the guides.
This is a great place for a dedicated surfer, but it's also good for a beginner (in November, there were 2 nearby gentle-but-fun waves) or someone who also wants to have some adventures out of the water, like yoga, horseback riding, sightseeing in Leon, Volcano hikes or boarding, or any of the other stuff that visitors do around these parts. Solid home-cooked food and lots of it, good A/C in rooms, decent Wi-Fi.

I went to ThunderBomb in late July for a week of surfing. My experience was incredible, not only the waves were excellent but the accommodations were great. Jonathan, the owner, was super friendly. The meals prepared by the master chef Papa Oso were delicious, and German, our guide, was on point. We surfed every day for about 4 - 5 hours under epic conditions. I would highly recommend ThunderBomb to anyone who just wants to surf awesome waves among friends.
Also, Ryan, a well known photographer, was staying at the camp at the same time. He managed to take awesome photos of everyone. Such an artist.
I will definitively go back.
Our stay at Thunderbomb was amazing. The food and house was excellent, and the waves and surf instructors just made it an easy 10/10. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and the whole place had an authentic feeling. Ya man!
Surf: The waves around the camp are awesome and mostly empty. We spent our time on the beach break right in front of the house (super fun, you're the only people out), Nahualapa (fun little cove with easy waves), a left river mouth (20-minute boat ride to get to the break, completely alone) and the boom (pretty heavy). Coming from New York where you have to fight for every wave the fact that the breaks are crowd-free is exactly what I was looking/ hoping for. On the first day, I unluckily, unsuccessfully tried to break my nose on my board. Jonathan was amazingly accommodating and organized a quick trip to a local hospital to get it checked out. Because we missed lunch at the house, he even organized for a quick taco lunch in Chinandega.Food: Alec, chef and yoga instructor had just arrived as we got there. He cooked up some really tasty and perfectly portioned meals. Everything from steak to tacos to lobster - all fresh and healthy. There's always a pot of coffee on the go and fresh fruit/snacks during the day.The camp: The new house is clean, spacious and modern in a small village that feels well off the beaten track. The hammocks out front are amazing for naps between sessions; you'll need them after 4:30 dawn patrols. Guests and the Thunderbomb team eat and drink together every night, which makes the camp feel like a little family.People: Jonathan, German, Ricky, Alec and Connor are an amazing team - upbeat, always accommodating and just generally good people. Driving around to get to different breaks with Jonathan is a blast. He seems to know everyone in the village and feels very much a part of the community.

Their new digs were awesome - sweet beachfront villa with copious amounts of hammocks and homemade rum. We had a giant room with a walk-in closet, ocean view and massive private bathroom. The team is awesome - Jonathan is cheerful and hilarious, and really intent on giving every guest an unforgettable stay. He's also really involved in the local community, which is great. German and Ricky, two local guides, are super friendly dudes as well. Jonathan employs a private chef, and during our stay there the food was insanely good (Thanks, Alec!), though chefs rotate every few months. The best part was that meals were plated and served at a communal table, giving the camp a family-home kind of vibe. Of course you're there to surf, and epic, completely empty waves are about 10 feet from your bed. Plus, everyone is happy to get up at 4:00 to catch some waves, but no matter how early you roll out of bed, Ricky will have beat you with fresh coffee and fruit. Don't feel the need to surf every second? Therere still tons to do - from hammock naps to volleyball, volcano hiking and horseback riding on the beach, to ocean-facing downward dogs thanks to the new yoga package.
In the travel world, surprises can add wonder or horror. When our group of 4 "experienced " surf buddies rolled in a bit early to Thunderbomb's new waterfront digs, we surprised the 'bomb squad " crew who were in a frenzy getting the new place ready. Turns out the owner had been out of country for a few weeks and we were group in a nice but not quite ready for prime time new location. Place looked like a hurricane had just hit, but here is where the rubber meets the road. Jonathan, German and the house crew literally blew the place up and had it humming before our very eyes. What matters most is the helpful attitude and really hard work that makes this place a sweet hang. And it just gets better. A tour down the pretty and very mellow beach revealed the ruins of the old bomb space which although soulful has nothing on this new, clean and airy 2 story on the beach. Great and plentiful hammocks, comfy beds and blasting room air-conditioning make this work for most except the finicky. Yes, it's a surf lodge, so if you don't want a surf vibe with a bit of soul, it might not work for you. If super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff are on your list, with truly tasty eats, this should be. Seems there are plenty of decent surfs about for all levels. The camp is in the boonies but easy to get to and very relaxing and the bomb squad aims to please. Might want to stop at the market about an hour out for any special provisions. Food and beer are ample and good but not extensive. They did an excellent job catering to a gluten free diet in our group. Really enjoyed their hospitality, and the massage included in our package was excellent. After a long day surfing, you might just need one.

I've spent a good deal of time in Nicaragua over the last 3 years and after my first stay at Thunderbomb, I was guaranteed to come back for more. I've now spent around 2 months spreading out at the camp and can't wait to go back for more. You can surf in front of the house or take a short trip to many of the nearby great waves for various skill levels. My girlfriend now travels to Thunderbomb with me when I go as she enjoys laying in a hammock and relaxing while I'm out surfing. I've been there with various chefs and was always happy with the food. Nothing beats a beer (always plentiful) in a hammock between surf sessions or sitting on the steps towards the beach with a beer at sunset. Hoping to make a return trip for 2 weeks in October.

As a first surf trip, Thunderbomb exceeded expectations. I had an idea of what it might be like but from the first day I knew it would be better than what I'd imagined. It's important to understand that it's a surf camp ran by surfers (and all-around good dudes) for the purpose of getting you to some of the best, uncrowded waves in the world. Located in northern Nicaragua, Thunderbomb is quite literally at the edge of the beaten path when it comes to the surf trip experience. I traveled alone (but stayed with some awesome people/ new friends) and had a blast. The service and over all vibe of the people at Thunderbomb is that of a family. The food was beyond delicious and there was always lots of it. Each meal seemed better than the last. The nice beds and air-conditioning made getting good nights sleep easy in a country so humid. The area in and around is rural and beautiful. The waves are some of the best I've ever seen/ surfed in my life. I owe a huge thanks to Jon, German, Anais, and the other ladies in the kitchen. You all made it a truly memorable experience. If you're thinking about taking a surf trip, do it, and stay with Thunderbomb! You'll be glad with you did.

This place is great! Ive traveled to Central America multiple times to surf. This was my second trip to Nicaragua. Out of all the different places, this one stood out over all of the others. We stayed here in early August. Travel to and from airport was seamless. From a surf perspective, Jonathan and team have this place dialed. They know where to be and when to be there. There are a number of different waves in the area, suitable for anyone beginner to professional. We surfed 2-3 times a day, every day. Both Jonathan and German surf, and are a blast to surf with. They also have a killer surf photographer here (Connor), great guy. From an accommodations perspective, it was perfect. Great rooms with air-conditioning, bathroom, shower. Then the main area of Thunderbomb has numerous hammocks and table in the shade, all of which overlook the ocean. We never had to worry about locking our doors, or making sure our boards were in our room. They also have a security guard at night. Ive done all inclusive trips a few times and have always found the food very good, but repetitive. Thunderbomb was the complete opposite. I cant say enough about the food here. 3 large meals each day, all different, all unbelievable. Truly 5-star dinning. If you get hungry at other times, theyll make sure to have snacks. Trips can at times be stressful, this was not. Jonathan and team take care of absolutely everything. All you have to do is show up. Ill be back many times.
My little brother and I went down to Thunderbomb last week. This trip didn't go as planned. My little brother had a near death experience by passing out in the surf and taking in a lot of water. Jonathan, the owner, did everything possible for my brother and I and I really have to thank him and the people there for saving his life. I really can't thank them enough for everything they did. The waves were amazing though, the boom is perfect for good surfers looking to get some nice barrels and they have a lot of other spots for surfers of all skill levels. The food is amazing and Jonathan and Herman are really cool and fun to hang out with when the waves aren't firing (which is rare). Also, Diogo, the photographer, is great and one of biggest chargers I've ever met in my life. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone and will definitely come back.

I was looking for a place that was in my budget but also provided all the amenities I wanted in a surf trip and these guys definitely fulfilled those needs. First off the property is pretty sweet with a nice size Palapa style platform with a tiki bar that served the coldest beers, meals, and appetizers. The rooms were super comfy as well with air-conditioning letting me get my shut eye before the early morning rose. One of the owners, John, who knows the area pretty well, was able to take me and some of the other surfers to a few different spots in there big 4x4 truck so we rolled right up to the break. They also had an on-site surf photographer, so I had some awesome shots to take home when the trip was all said and done. Good waves, good vibe, and good people. I will definitely be coming back.
Jonathan, Herman and the team down at Thunderbomb are the best! This place is a top notch, everything you need surf camp right on the beach and a few minutes away from the best break in northern Nica. I often day dream about driving down the beach to check the waves only to realize I'm stuck in New York City. I'll be back soon. Also, Jonathan was super responsive and set up my trip with about only a week notice. In addition, when I was experiencing some travel difficulties coming into country, he made it super easy to coordinate getting to camp (drove about 45 minutes to pick me up) I ended up hiring a boat to take me across the gulf of Fonseca from La Union and into Potosi. If you are somewhat adventurous, I'd highly recommend seeing if you can make it across!

If you are going to Nicaragua, go to Thunderbomb. Ten days of great surf but more importantly to me was the warm hospitality and hanging with the crew. Jonathan has some incredible people working with him to make your stay unforgettable. Chef Gonzalo made our trip, from always having fresh fruits and homemade bread available at the beach after every session to the most wonderfully creative and delicious meals catered to our tastes daily. Superb! Guide German was a real hard working young local Nicaraguan that was there to load your gear on the truck at 4:00, shred some waves with us (the kid rips), hang out and shoot the breeze, help with dinner or a drink well into the wee hours. Thanks German. Photographer Alex Postigo has an eye for capturing surf and nature and "the moment" in a very enthusiastic and creative style. Thanks for catching some great moments for us. Sarah is the camp assistant and went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and happy. Thank you, Thunderbomb Surf Camp!
