The yoga classes

Yoga is for everyone, you don't need to have any prior experience. For sunrise we take you down by the seaside for our morning Yang Yoga followed in the late afternoon with our gentle practice of Yin Yoga which focuses on increasing your inner peace, harmony, love and joy. Practicing Yang & Yin yoga will help to harmonize the nervous system, increase your sense of balance with the body & mind and strengthen your lymphatic system.

Traditionally the Yin evening classes are more soft, slow, restorative to integrate with the days surfing activities and prepare the body for a great rest over night. Let yourself emerge into a nice flow of your yoga practice. Enjoy breathing, relax your body, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and also your mind.

The Salty Pelican yoga & surf retreat sits snuggled between the sun-dappled shores of the Cascais Bay and the Sintra's dramatic mountain range. Cascais is renowned for its glorious stretch of white sandy beaches which are simply stunning, beautiful palaces, cosmopolitan vibrancy, and as Lisbon’s most sophisticated beach destination. With over 300 days of sun per year, you will spend most of your time outdoors, even during winter.

The whole coastline offers a seemingly endless amount of dramatic and ever-changing scenery, culminating in the extraordinary town of Sintra, the end-of-summer getaway for royals over 100 years ago and now an official World Heritage site. Truly one of the most unusual and magical places to experience in Europe, the centerpieces are undoubtedly the Pena palace and park, which many say was the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle in Disney’s “Magic Kingdom”, the mystical and symbolic Quinta da Regaleira palace with its tunnels, magical grottos, fountains, and gothic architecture, and right at Sintra’s highest point, the Moorish castle offering outstanding views across the mountains and down to the Atlantic.

Marvel at the unspoiled sand dunes and untamed waves at Guincho Beach - part of the beautiful Sintra Cascais National Park - with its high waves that attract surfers and kite surfers from all over the world as having some of the best waves in Europe. Exploring Cascais is a voyage of discovery. On the one hand, there is the original historic area that has a distinct nautical air about it - with its cobbled winding streets leading down to the cozy harbour where the day’s fresh catch is still sold by local fishermen in the nearby square.

Don’t miss the Seixas palace, a magnificent 19th century palace overlooking the sea, or the municipal museum so close to the sea that waves often reach the steps at high tide. Have a light lunch at the restaurant and café in the charming Santa Marta lighthouse museum and check out the Atlantic views.

Nearby places

  • Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) - 20 minutes
  • Monte Estoril train station, 750 meters

The retreat includes daily buffet-style breakfast with fresh baked bread, cheeses, hams, freshly cut fruits, vegetable slices, delicious teas, fruit infused water and yogurts. You can also enjoy our twice weekly seafood BBQ, Clams & Wine night, Sushi nights, tapas & wine tasting and sunset BBQ cruises. You will also find a delicious menu serving ridiculously good tasting cocktails, craft beers, cider, wines, sangria and some healthy snacks at an additional cost.

The Salty Pelican retreat sits snuggled between the sun-dappled shores of the Cascais bay and Sintra's dramatic mountain range. To relax, you can always grab a beer from the bar, grill up some grub at the hostel barbecue area, or lay back and chill-out in one of the hammocks in the beautiful garden with some mighty good tunes.

Beaches

Cascais is renowned for its glorious stretch of white sandy beaches which are simply stunning, beautiful palaces, cosmopolitan vibrancy and as Lisbons most sophisticated beach destination. You can take a stroll on the seaside promenade and discover many beachfront cafes where you can absorb the clean swathes of golden sand with the wide stretch of the Atlantic sweeping around the bay to Cascais.

Quinta da Regaleira Palace

Imagine a place with secret passages, stepping stones, hidden caves and grottos, a library that looks like you're floating in air, beautiful chapel and residence - all while being located in one of the most beautiful parks. That would be Quinta da Regaleira, an architectural marvel built at the direction of Portugal's first millionaire and to his exacting specifications. Its really one of the most magical and enchanting places you can visit whilst you're in Cascais. The bus right near The Salty Pelican takes you there in just a 25 minute bus ride.

Visiting Lisbon and Belem

Lisbon city centre is just an easy 25 minute ( 2.50 EUR ) train ride away from The Salty Pelican. Its a great day trip to add to your week here and you can hop off the train at Belem halfway and try one of the Portugal's most famous pastel de Belem, a traditional Portuguese custard tart, a treat not to be missed. Belem is also full of sights and scenery to check-out before heading into Lisbon. It's a great little pit-stop.

Sintra

The whole coastline offers a seemingly endless amount of dramatic and ever-changing scenery, culminating in the extraordinary town of Sintra, the end-of-summer getaway for royals over 100 years ago, and now an official World Heritage Site.

Biking and mountain biking

You can ride through the amazing scenery of Sintra National Park with its spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean and dense forests. Visit archaeological sites, fantastic beaches, and unspoiled villages as you pedal along some of the nicest routes in Europe.

CONS Cons: I think if I was informed more about having money ready. For example I went to Sintra on the Monday and that worked out more expensive than was informed to us. Also we were told we were getting collected at the hostel when actually we had to get the bus. Luckily we all had change.Same for the cruise, we weren't told about having to pay for the taxi. Just little things really but just to take the stress off

PROS Pros: Everything!! Didn't have to try and plan too much myself, I just joined in what was already there.

Great hostel - great yoga teacher - great place

PROS Pros: My stay at the Salty Pelican was amazing. The hostel is very clean and comfortable. The garden is very cozy as well as the bbq area. The way to the hostel is easy once you know it. I would definitely recommend taking a cab from the train station to the hostel, especially with luggage. It is about 4 Euro. The yoga teachers were great. I didn't like the surfing so much but that is probably very subjective. The message at the hostel was great. Try it! All in all a perfect place to calm down, enjoy yoga with many other travelers (most of them travel by themselves, as well as I did). The yoga is perfect for all levels (beginner, intermediate or advanced). Just book your stay at the salty pelican! You wont regret it!

CONS Cons: I wasn't impressed by the yoga teacher as she didn't walk through the class to correct people's postures and missed to complete all postures on both sides of the body. Nice people, but there are other yoga retreats in this price category offering better quality of classes. For that price I would definitely expect more.

PROS Pros: Nicely decorated building and friendly staff, location in good walking distance to beach.

The yoga teaching was inspiring and a great for all levels, and the surf school allied with the hostel with are the best I've been to: superbly attentive and had beginners standing on their first session! Nothing deluxe or yoga retreat like, just a nice but ordinary hostel

CONS Cons: - The yoga despite being widely described as daily yoga classes wasn't the case. In the small print it says there will be one day without yoga but doesn't specify when. Previous retreats would allow that to be the day you travel otherwise tell you in advance. The excuse it's for their flexibility isn't good enough. A number of guests on short stays therefore missed out on some great yoga opportunities. Seeing as Ida is the only yoga teacher, it's understandable she needs a day off with 18 salty pelican classes a week plus other commitments. But there should be another yoga instructor for when she is unavailable. Also given Salty Pelican describe themselves as a Yoga hostel, they should offer more yoga classes & types as having spoken to a number of other guests there was a lot of disappointment. Plus the yoga classes were oversubscribed... when 23 people were crammed into a small yoga studio it was one of the worst classes I've ever had. Private yoga classes could be an offering as well to further the supposed yoga retreat experience. Plus one of the days the afternoon yoga was cancelled and the morning one extended - There are so many different tick boxes for each day of possible activities, it made it such a stressful experience ensuring signing up for the right thing at the right time. There was no clear schedule of start & finish times, and was generally a bit disorganised. - All the surf/SUP/ Climbing activities are outsourced and no cheaper than going directly to the providers, so as a guest it was just an additional middle layer complicating things. All the surf/sup classes were just an hour, whereas when you're learning to surf you typically want a couple of hours. - Having 4 showers between upwards of 30 guests isn't really ideal and they're usually crowded. - Prices for extras were a bit steep given the relatively low cost area, eg airport transfers at 45eur double the price of an uber. The meals were more expensive than local restaurants. Prices also fluctuated eg 30- or 35eur for a Sintra tour. All little factors than don't help the experience. Similarly, the 1 long + 2 short massages were booked in for 2 long massages which was fine but only explained why when asked which caused confusion initially. - Breakfasts advertised as including freshly baked rolls, local honey, selection of cereals & muesli's, boiled eggs, local farm cheese, sliced vegetables, fruits and cold meats. Realistically were cheap supermarket white bread, ham, cheese, basic cereals and fruit, not quite the fresh farm food as described. - Due to the size of the hostel, there was no structure or personalised recommendations of how best to spend your days. The staff were all polite but didn't have impact on my stay. I had a nice week but by the end it felt awkward/unusual I was there a week given the fast turn over of the other guests. - It is such a beautiful location, why do they not offer a beach yoga photography session to capture some of the memories. Overall, it's a great concept having a yoga & surf hostel but in reality it was just a very ordinary hostel which happened to be by the beach. If I was just looking for a bed in Portugal then it's great but it does not belong on a yoga retreat website. If anyone is genuinely interested in yoga do not go here, go to Prana Casa in the Algarve instead.

PROS Pros: The location was good - 10 mins walk to the beach/ train station and 25mins to Cascais town, so there was beautiful scenery but also a good choice of reasonably priced bars & restaurants. By calling it a Yoga & Surf hostel most of the guests had a lot in common and helped create a chilled out and friendly atmosphere. Ida, the yoga teacher, is such a positive ball of energy and such a genuine person.

Organizer response: Hello Lisa lets make this clear to everyone why you have written this very detailed review about every aspect of our business. You asked for a refund at check-in for your unused yoga classes as you had booked an early flight and you couldn't make your last yoga class. Once you realised that was against our policies, you then threatened to write a bad review if you did not get a refund. Unfortunately we do not react to verbal threats to our staff. However I did correspond with you in regards to the matter and made all our policies clear to you. To clear it up... our listings advertise 12 yoga classes included in the package and there is also no yoga one day of the week which is usually Mondays. All our listings clearly advertise this and also once again after their initial inquiry. No one misses out on yoga unless you choose to not take part in yoga, like yourself ;-) We believe 12 yoga classes over your week stay is more than enough and you will find a lot of alternative retreats that do not offer this amount of yoga for the price we advertise. You are correct, when it rains we use a yoga studio... the studio fits 25 people and we have been using that studio for 2 years without complaint. We usually have over 300 days of sunshine a year and we are mostly down by the beautiful seaside. We are sorry it rained one day while you are here but we cannot control that... but if we cancelled yoga because of the rain, Im sure you would write a bad review also. We are sorry you were stressed and you cannot follow a simple sign up sheet for activities... could you imagine the chaos if we didn't have a sign up sheet ;-) Thank you for confirming the excellent vibe at The Salty Pelican... as you mentioned our guests had a lot in common and helped create a chilled out and friendly atmosphere. We are also very happy you think Ida, our yoga teacher, is such a positive ball of energy and such a genuine person. That is why The Salty Pelican is so great... Thank you for highlighting our strengths. But I hope you feel a little better now venting your frustration about not getting a refund and we wish you all the best with your future travels.

    Amazing home away from home

CONS Cons: Their was nothing about the hostel and the staff I disliked. They couldn't have done a better job. Having been at about 20 surf schools around the world already, I am pretty skeptical about surf guiding. The surf school they work with could do a better job at guiding. I had two classes, but none of the guides have helped or guided me. Surf conditions were terrible at Guincho when I was there. A good surf school would head towards another beach with better (and safer) conditions. I understand that it's not easy to just go to another beach, but maybe they could cancel the class when that happens and schedule in two hours of class on another, better day. If you are a complete beginner, you will probably have a lot of fun, regardless.

PROS Pros: I like how the hostel is such a beautiful, peaceful, quiet and heartwarming place with a great yogi spirit. If you are a party animal, then this is definitely not your place, but for many it will be a home away from home... Monika, Gareth, Thiago, Ida, Atena and Sonya were the most lovely crew ever. Everyone tried their very best to please the guests and make everyone happy. The positive energy, the heartwarming smiles and hugs....it was a great experience! <3 Obrigada! I also loved the climbing with Isa and the stand up paddle boarding with Tina. They are both very lovely.

"I made the challenging decision to travel by myself recently. When I saw the offer of a one week package of 'Surf & Yoga' I got excited and knew it was exactly what I needed! So before I could change my mind, I booked the hostel and plane tickets. At the same time I had some doubts as I have never surfed and never stayed at a hostel before. But when I first stepped out on Monte Estoril station and took a breath of salty ocean breeze I knew I made the right choice! At Salty Pelican I was warmly welcomed by Tiago who showed me around and suggested to join the evening BBQ that takes place in a cosy inner patio. Food and sangria was a great combination for connecting with people and that night I met a super crew of girls, who became more than just friends."

"We had yoga classes twice a day; strengthening in the morning and relaxing in the evening. Ida, the yoga teacher, is a true angel. Beautiful from the inside and outside! She adds the essential spiritual part to her class making it more than just body gymnastics. The surf trainers are so much fun and they make sure you enjoy every wave even if you don't succeed in standing up on the board (the way I did for the first three days but it didn't stop me from laughing all the time). The whole Salty Pelican family is so amazing! They make sure you feel at home and a big smile never leaves your face! Gareth, Monica and Tiago - this one is for you!"

"I stayed at the Cod Father room, on the upper bed, which didn't cause any inconvenience, even after Portugal wine. The bed is terribly comfortable! One tip - take the ear plugs (I didn't have them, but I'm not easily bothered when I want to sleep). There are 6 showers, and the two on the upper floor have a picturesque view also."

"I'm so happy and grateful for this experience! One of my best vacations! This place has some unique spirit definitely for its attraction and concentration of so many marvelous people!"

"Thank you for you support! Namaste! <3"

"I had a really wonderful week and would have liked to have stayed longer. The hostel is newly renovated, lovingly decorated and very clean. The crew is friendly, helpful and strives to ensure guests a great holiday. The generally very familiar atmosphere completes the comfort factor as of yet. Since I teach yoga, I was particularly interested in the courses there, and completely blown away by Ida that "Own", yoga teacher from Finland, which has its hours incredibly lovingly, individually and creatively designed and inspired me a lot. Depending on wind and weather the courses are held on the beach or in the garden; morning rather powerfully dynamic and afternoon very meditative and relaxed. "

"Cascais is also a nice, cozy town with beautiful beaches and great restaurants - for vegetarians (here especially recommended: House of Wonders)."

"Gorgeous hostel -small and friendly. I booked for a yoga and SUP package and it was amazing value. I went to the two yoga sessions a day with lovey teacher Ida. Dynamic yoga on beach in morning and stretching yin yoga at end of day in hostel garden, I walked down to Cascais to do daily Sup lessons in harbour with Tina - it was my first time paddle boarding and I loved every minute. Hostel has all new extremely comfy beds, AMAZING showers, lovely breakfast and garden to chill. Tiago, Monika and Gareth are friendly and welcoming and determined you will have a good time and feel at home. Well designed kitchen and communal eating space and people cooked and ate together.Hostel barbecue is great value too and a chance to socialise. Really hard to find any downsides except Cascais can be a bit windy - (which is why the surf is good) - so take a warmer top for evenings. Ten minute walk from Monte Estoril station, fifteen minutes from centre of Cascais for shopping. Book it!"

"This was my first holiday abroad by myself, and I was really nervous as I am relatively shy. I didn't know what to expect, when I started my trip, and a lot of things were different to what I imagined, but I had the best time on a vacation. Since I was travelling alone and booked a shared room, it was the best way to feel like being part of the community from the first moment on. I stayed a 5 nights to do some Yoga and learn so much but I got a lot more. Ida was so understanding and it doesn’t matter if your beginner or have done yoga for many years she will meet your needs. my yoga improved so much during my stay than probably in all the time I have been practising. From the process of booking to throughout the whole journey was made so easy, would like to say big thank you Gareth as I was struggling to find flight was understanding to add another night, would also like to say thank you to Monika for lovely welcome and getting me involved in activities knowing it was my first adventure would highly recommend the medication hike was amazing. The rooms are beautiful, clean and very comfortable. Although I was travelling alone for the first time in my life, and felt out my comfort zone, I never felt alone or lonely. I met so many nice and interesting people and everybody else felt the same hospitality as I did. I will for sure come back some day, you will always have a piece of my heart xxx"

"I stayed three nights in May 2017 and had a great time, the staff and guests are so friendly and welcoming, it's easy to meet people as the organised activities (including food nights) create immediate common ground. Yoga was fantastic with both instructors and a fantastic massage! One of the cleanest hostels I've ever stayed in with guests very respectful of each other and the staff. Upstairs bathrooms were huge and great showers! Good size dorms with comfortable beds. It's a pretty chilled place, yoga and surfing has people up early and busy all day so evenings are relaxed. "Wow, where do I start with explaining how great The Salty Pelican is??? From the moment you walk in the door the team (Monika, Thiago, Ida, Gareth, Magnus & co - you are so great!) make you feel so welcome! They are so personable and friendly and willing to help you with anything and everything. The building and garden are absolutely beautiful and the facilities are really nice and maintained to a high standard. The price of the packages offers you amazing value for money - the teaching of the different activities (I did yoga, paddle boarding, hiking and meditation) is top quality, offer a really personal experience and leave you feeling so restored and relaxed. I also had a massage whilst I was there and I felt so relaxed I had to take a nap after. It was amazing. With the Salty team you also feel like you are experiencing the area from a different perspective, not just the usual tourist trail - the highlight for me was the meditation hike to Praia da Ursa. This beach is a true gem. One of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Overall, my experience at The Salty Pelican was fantastic. I really didn't want to leave and I can't wait to go back!!! The activities offered at the Salty Pelican are all lots of fun and the teachers in all courses really great. I found the other guests to be very friendly as well and I assume that the hostel, with its focus on Yoga, does attract the "right" people when looking for a very sociable accomodation. "Me and my friend went to the hostel for 3 nights. We were originally going to do the yoga package but when we found out you could pay for activities as you go we decided it was a better option I.e yoga €15 a session and paddle boarding and surfing around €30 a session. With option of hikes and rock climbing too!"

"I had never done yoga before so wasn't sure what to expect. There were morning and afternoon classes. The morning ones are usually spent by the beach and afternoon in the park. We did 1 morning and 2 afternoon. By the last session I did I felt like I had really connected to yoga and will be keeping it up at home! The instructors were both great teacher and really got me engaged into yoga! The morning sessions tend to be about physical strength while afternoon about mediation. We also did paddle board yoga which was lots of fun! Although I couldn't do a lot of the yoga poses on the paddle board!"

"The hostel itself is in a great location. 10 minute walk to the beach, 30 minute walk into the local town Cascais. I liked the fact the hostel was hidden a little meaning you got to take in portugals culture a bit more. It has a nice front garden with beanbag chairs for sunbathing and reading and then a back table area for eating and chilling in the evening. It has a kitchen so you can buy your own food and cook but they also offer different food nights which you can pay for! Although I thought they were a bit pricey."

"The reason why I'm not giving it 5* is because I don't think staying in a hostel is really for me and the only down side was the noise. I was on the middle floor which was near the kitchen and staff office. On the day of arrival I'd been up since 1:30am and was really tired and wanted to sleep. The problem was there was a lot of shouting outside the room which meant it took a while to sleep! 3 nights was enough of sleeping in a hostel it's a personal choice whether you could do it for longer!"

Yes, the shower may be a place you will never want to leave. But, it is the people of the Salty Pelican that make a stay here something beyond flowery description. The guests are fascinating, one and all, each with a story well told around the communal tables. Every person I met was genuinely passionate about life and adventure. Maybe it's the yoga or the surfing that attracts this manner of human, but I believe it has more to do with the staff. They are filled with an easy going joy every day. Their smiles are never forced. Their concern for their guests, never feigned. I miss them already and wish the world had more Salty Pelicans. Go. And make sure Tiago cooks too many clams for dinner, and whine until his Mom makes 7 different kinds of magical desserts."

"Stayed for one week surf and yoga package in the Love Room (double room). It was a really amazing week and I didn't want to leave at the end of it. I'd never done anything quite like this before, so wasn't sure quite what to expect. I'd now do the same again tomorrow if I could. Massive thank you to Tiago, Anna and Ida who work at the hostel. I loved the yoga and massage sessions with Anna - wish I could have taken her home with me! :) Everything else was just perfect, too. Thank you all so, so much!"

"A magical week spent here on the yoga and massage package. The staff are amazing, so friendly and helpful. The hostel has such a great and welcoming feel to it. It is in a beautiful old house and is really nicely decorated and furnished. The yoga and massage was just fantastic - Anna and Ida the resident yogis are wonderful people. Yoga by the sea was simply brilliant."

"It's a 5 min walk to the nearest shops or a 20 min walk into Cascais. Perfectly located, you can walk wherever you need to and the train connections to Lisbon are so easy. You can also hire bikes to cycle along the coast which is fab. I cannot recommend this place enough, I had such a special week here which I will always remember. It was the perfect as I was able to have a relaxing yoga holiday without feeling isolated. Perfect."

"We chose to do our surfing holiday with Salty Pelican due to the excellent reviews. After staying here, there is very very little at fault- it is by far the best Hostel I have ever stayed in. On entry, we were welcomed warmly by the lovely Monika who showed us round and to our room. Tiago was always super helpful and knows all the good places to go and see and eat in around Estoril/Cascais, which he showed us on a map. From the first moment we stepped foot here, it felt like a second home. The hostel is so chilled out and has a lovely garden to contribute to that atmosphere. It's in a beautiful traditional Portuguese house, with high ceilings inside and decorative tiles outside. They have a fridge full of drinks which you can buy or put on your tab to pay at the end- quite snazzy for a hostel ;) you can also do this for most other extras such as towels, activities, etc. The best part of this hostel is that they organise so many activities for you to do. You'll never be left with nothing to do. Surfing is on every day, and you can sign up to it the night before, which is really handy depending on how you feel. We had already bought a surf package so we went every day and had a really great time! It's really good for first-timers/beginners. Other activities include SUP, yoga and sometimes a sunset cruise with bbq ;) Our room was really great (we stayed in the Love room). Bright and airy with big windows and our own private balcony! Perfect for hanging our wet clothes to dry. The other best thing about this hostel (it's hard to only have one best thing when you're as awesome as Salty Pelican) is the enormous bathrooms on the top floor. They are really big and the shower is soooo nice. Better than most hotels I've been to and cleaned every day. I did not want to leave at the end of my stay, and now I want to come back. Thank you Gareth, Tiago and Monika for making our stay so wonderful :))))"

"My time there was so amazing, relaxing, breathtaking and emotional, that I found a place to rest my soul. This is a place which is run by magnificent owners Thiago, Garreth, Monika. The owners have an in-house yogi goddess, Ida (namaste from the bottom of my soul), and many volunteers and other helpers who all make the place the best hostel I ever stayed in. Go there for as long as you can, make sure to do the yoga and other social activities, and feel how your soul is much lighter when you leave. Question is not if I'll be back, but when and how often."

"The Salty Pelican is an amazing hostel. It was my first time in a hostel. The Salty Pelican staff took my fear and changed it into beautiful moments. Thank you for this. Everything was great - the room, bathrooms, staff, yoga, and surfing. I am already planning when I can come back to visit them."

"I had no idea when I booked this stay that I would have such an amazing time. Being in my late 40s, I thought I'd do yoga in the morning, surf, yoga, and then sleep. How wrong could I be! I made new friends and laughed so much. The rooms were colourful, clean, and tidy. The food is delicious - especially during clam night. The staff are wonderful. They go to lengths to make sure you feel at home and organize activities for you. Ida, the yoga teacher, is brilliant. Her sessions are well thought out easy to follow. I learnt so much about yoga from Ida. I would not hesitate to go back to this special hostel."

"Stayed at The Salty Pelican for 3 nights, 5 guys aged 18 and 19 in a 6 bed dorm room. Facilities were great with a well equipped kitchen and spacious bathrooms including a massive shower on the top floor. You could stretch your arms out and not touch the walls of the shower!Breakfast served until 10:30 AM with a good selection selection of cereal, toast, yoghurt and fruit. Beds were comfy if a little difficult to get up to the top bunk for a tall guy and storage space under beds was useful as a safe (if you bring a padlock). Nice lounge area with board games, jenga, etc. plus beautiful outdoor seating area and grass area for yoga. Did not use the surfing part of the hostel - bus to beach and lessons- as instead went to Cascais beach every day which was large enough and had good places for drinks in the sun. Beware that beach football and bat & ball are illegal on the beach! Best part about the hostel was the Sunday evening BBQ for 12 euro which comprised of plenty of barbecued chicken drumsticks plus a perfectly cooked sole, potatoes, salad and beer or sangria. Great value! Make sure you know where you are going as directions from Estoril to the hostel are required, 3-4 minutes uphill. Cascais town has plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy and we particularly liked John Bull bar for cheap drinks and to watch the European Championship and also Bordallos burger restaurant which was great value and tasted awesome. Also pedalos are good value on the beach."

"Great hostel located in Cascais just outside of Lisbon. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful and will go the extra length to ensure your stay is enjoyable. The hostel itself is great, a traditional Portuguese building, light and airy with plenty of communal space, and the showers in particular are fantastic. After returning home I realised I had left a mobile phone at the hostel, I contacted them and they happily posted the phone to my home address. Highly recommended."

"My friend and I came to The Salty Pelican for a yoga and surf retreat. It was our first time surfing. I loved doing yoga everyday especially beach yoga on the pier where the views were breathtaking. The rooms were clean and funky, the staff were like old friends, and the barbecue nights are a great way to socialise with the rest of the guests. The actual house is beautiful, and Cascais is absolutely lovely. Great stay, fantastic all around. We didn't want to leave. Definitely would love to come back again!"

"I booked a surf + yoga retreat with The Salty Pelican and man was it the best week ever! Gareth, Monica and Tiago are amazing night hosts. They are all truly interested, helpful and accommodating. The breakfast each morning was delicious, the yoga was amazing and very professional, the surf lessons was so much fun (we were all total beginners!). The hostel itself is a beautiful, old house but renovated. Big rooms, big bathrooms and very clean! The common area was also great, with a well equipped kitchen. The barbecue nights on Thursday and Sunday were my favorite. We had fresh fish and sangria. Just to note, it's a bit of an uphill walk to get there but it's very close to the train station. Cascais beaches are stunning, and the town is beautiful. A very chilled area, not much night life. I recommend this hostel to anyone (old and young!). P.S. The place looks exactly as the photos."

It's the third time I’ve stayed in hostels in Cascais, first time at the Salty Pelican and so far its definitely my favourite!! SEA you soon!"

"I spent 3 nights at the Salty Pelican and had an awesome experience! The hostel is in a beautifully restored classic Portuguese home and has modern decor, large light rooms and is very clean. There was a BBQ on Thurs night on the patio which all the guest went to and it was cool to meet everyone. Cascais is a really pretty town and there's plenty of stuff to do/see nearby. The hostel also organised yoga and surf lessons which were awesome, and gave recommendations for day trips/restaurants. Thanks for the best hostel experience, I'll be visiting again very soon!"

"We spend two nights in The Salty Pelican and it's literally the best hostel we've ever stayed in! Sounds a bit over the top but we can't say it in any other way. First of all the hostel itself is a beautifully renovated house which is decorated welcoming and trendy at the same time. Rooms are simple but stylish and the beds are really comfortable. You're going to love the relaxed outdoor area and bathrooms which definitely have hotel standard - bathtub and hugh showers included. Next up is the awesome service which offers you everything from a huge variety of drinks, an all-you-can-eat barbecue once a week, a great free breakfast to lots of activities like yoga and surf lessons. We've tried surfing ourselves and we can just recommend trying it too it's totally suitable for beginners as we are beginners ourselves, the instructors are great and it's just lots fun over all. Last but definitely not least we have to talk about the hosts themselves. Monica, Gareth and Tiago are amazing people and extremely thoughtful and kind hosts which are always concerned about your personal well-being. You just feel like living in a shared flat instead of a hostel if you're willing to connect with them and the other guests which for us is the most important quality of a hostel. So if you are up for a home away from home, lovely new people which might even get friends in the end and a more than enjoyable location the Salty Pelican is the place to choose! If there would be a chance of just moving into this hostel forever we would definitely do so! ;) Thank you for the amazing time and keep on doing what you're doing!"
