8 Days Surf Portugal

  • Surfcastle, Baleal, Ferrle - Peniche, Portugal

Overview

Surf Camp Portugal

The Surfcastle was built in 1920 by the family Boticas. In the year 2006, Joao and Pedro decided to transform this vintage property into a surf house that would host guests from many different countries and cultures, and they focused on setting up a surf school with the best materials and leading edge surf teachers. Now, Surfcastle is an old-style surf camp with added comfort, style and sophistication. It is a place you can enjoy even on those rare days the surf is down and a place where you can bring a non-surfing partner or kids to, without fear that they get stir-crazy or bored.

The Casa da Gaurda is located next door to the main house and offers perfect accommodation for groups and families, providing self-contained living in a charming house with 3 bedrooms. Guests of the small house have access to all facilities of the main house. The house has an interesting history - it was used by the Portuguese national guard ('guarda') as a lookout over the coastline, who wanted to take advantage of the premium location of the house to police smuggling and other illegal activities.

Sea views

All rooms of Casa da Gaurda have views of the famous Lagido surf sport or the Beglas coast. The kitchen in particular provides the perfect place to cook a meal with your friends or family and watch the waves.

Atmosphere

The small house has its own special atmosphere provided by its comfortable lounge with fireplace, private kitchen and bathroom. Guests of the small house can also share in the warmth and comfort of the main house, where they will be enjoying breakfast every morning.

Outdoor areas

The small house has its own back yard right on the cliffs, where you can enjoy the sea views. Surfcastle also has a variety of other outdoor areas for you to enjoy during your stay at the hotel. Their front garden is ideal for football, surf warm ups or yoga and you can always find a windless, sunny spot on one of their many terraces.

Friendly

Surfcastle takes huge pride in providing a friendly atmosphere, and there is always staff around the Surfcastle should you require help.

  • Every day, you will be taken to the best spots for your surf sessions.
  • A typical lesson lasts around 90 minutes, and you can expect a method of teaching that can suit all kinds of ability, age and knowledge. Surfcastle tries to make lessons as personal as possible.
  • Surfcastle coaches see every wave of each student and will monitor progress closely, giving advice and feedback at the beach and also in the water. They will often take video of you, and after the session, they will analyze and correct your surfing in the comfort of the Surfcastle lounge (an image is worth a thousand words) to help you improve your surfing skills.
  • Surfcastle knows how addictive surfing can be, so once you're ready, they will encourage you to go out and enjoy the freedom to catch waves on your own using their equipment.
  • Some surf spots are: Rio Cortiço, Piscinas, Pico da Mota, Point Fabril, Almagreira, Secret, Gigi, Lagido, Prainha, Cantinho da Baia, Meio da Baia, Cerros, Molhe Leste, Banana beach, Supertubos, Consolação, Porto Batel.

"Joao was the perfect host, a larger-than-life character with great local knowledge; most importantly where the best places are to eat! Really liked my room in the house and i had great beach views. You really don't have to carry your surf board far. I opted for the package surf lessons included, which I think is worth it, even though surf conditions weren't always compliant, not always beginner waves, also, the water is fresh Full wetsuit required. Surf castle is the perfect place for solo travelers/couples and families alike. I went on my own, but met people from all over the world, and have made friends. I'll be back next year!"

"What a wonderful week we've had in this special place! It’s truly delightful to meet such great people from all around the world who share the same passion for surfing, good food and relaxing in a great environment. Thanks to João, Pedro and the crew at Surfcastle for making our stay such a memorable one. The special little excursion from Pedro's beach to get on the outside was a real treat! The welcome barbeque which happened appropriately on day 5 was such a lovely night - excellent barbeque fish and sardines, and of course, the excellent surf lessons and varieties of conditions made it a surf camp. I'd definitely recommend to friends and come back, too!!! Thanks again for a fabulous surfing week holiday in Portugal!"

"What a treat! We've seen a lot of cool stuff over the last 14 months driving up from South Africa, but your awesome house powered by the passion of surfing has to be some of the coolest. Like the retro Ford transit parked outside, may you keep running strong for a long time to come! A real honor to include the Surfcastle as one of the places to stay on our AfricanSurfer project, thanks a lot!"

"Every time I was walking by the Surfcastle, I thought that one day I was going to spend my holidays in this fantastic house. Last month, I visited your place and this made me decide to book my holidays! This weekend was amazing! The Yoga sessions in the Surfcastle living room with the sun rays warmed my back. The concert from project Almagreira was simply unforgettable. The company was great and I woudln´t have asked for anything else. I promise to come back some day in this summer! A big kiss for everybody in the Surfcasle"
