Coaching
Surf & Yoga Mirassa aims to keep things a bit different. From their fine surrounding at the guesthouse and the surf points nearby, all their certified surf coaches and guides, and to the equipment that they use, they aim to have the highest regional standard.
Everything on the surf coaching courses is designed to make sure that you get the most out of your surfing during your stay. The surf programs are comprehensive in that they not only include plenty of time in the surf but also video analysis, feedback, and surf theory classes.
Each surfing session is progressive and goal oriented for each of the participants and at the end of the surf session, your coach will be discussing with you how you progressed learning that new skill taught.
The team is careful not to mix ability levels. Therefore, there will be a four to one student-instructor ratio at all times. This will also mean that you will never have to wait for others to keep up or feel left behind looking at the good surfers.
Location and surf check
Sri Lanka’s southwest coast is a wave garden with more than 15 surf spots accessible within easy reach from the camp, with most of the breaks located within 10 minutes. Every morning, a surf check online and with local surfing friends is performed to decide which beaches to head to.
The beaches you visit will depend on several factors, such as ability level of each group and the swell conditions. This means that the chances are high that you will have ideal conditions no matter your level.
Video analysis and surf theory
In addition to plenty of time in the water, all guests will also receive theory lessons. Depending on which package you book, you also have the option to get your surfing videos reviewed by the surfing team.
Your first surf lesson
Some people are supremely confident in the waves, while others are intimidated by just being in the ocean environment but everyone, without exception, enjoys their first day surfing. The location of your first surf lesson is Weligama Beach Break, one of the finest beginner surfing beaches in South Sri Lanka.
The water is warm, with a perfect sandy bottom, shallow water, and no dangerous sea life or current make this the ideal start point for your surfing vacation. The first element of your first surf lesson will be on the beach warming up, introducing you to the surf break and your beginner board.
The trainers will move on to teach you laying on the board at the correct position, paddling on the board, and pop-up. If you have a weaker body, other relevant methods of getting up will be taught, such as a four-step method. You will also learn some necessary safety techniques.
Your first day of surfing will finish with a summary of the skills which will be covered during the upcoming week, as well as what they will lead on to. That is where the fun starts. For most of you, after the first day of surfing, within five days you can aim to go out the back and start catching the green waves already.
Yoga
Yoga complements surfing in many ways. It helps three main strengths any beginner surfer should aim to develop in the medium run: upper body strength, endurance, and flexibility. No matter your age, size, or fitness level, the program is suitable for all levels of experience. The instructor will adapt poses to your ability.
Yoga at the camp will be carried out in the lawn with the shade of palm trees. Sunset yoga at the cliff overlooking the Indian ocean and beautiful Sri Lankan sunsets is also offered. Full moon yoga is also an option at the camp.
