The Maldives offers more than 60 surf breaks in 10 of its 26 Atolls. Crystal clear water, perfect and constant peeling waves, beautiful surroundings with white sand, palm trees and turquoise blue lagoons await you. Two main areas define the surf destinations here: North and South Male Atolls and the Central Atolls - Maldives surf holidays offer them both. They all enjoy the swells that the southern Indian Ocean produces.
Surfers love Emperor Atoll because, with a maximum of 12 guests, you are sure to get the most from your trip. A comfortable boat, she measures 26 meters and offers 6 twin/double ensuite cabins. Each has a full-size double bed with a single bed above, air-con and fan. On the main deck is a large saloon with four separate seating and table areas as well as a 38″ LCD flat screen TV with multi-system home theatre surround sound. For video and photography enthusiasts, there are plenty of recharging points/edit playback facilities. WiFi is available when in range of a signal, charged per week.
A welcoming modern, spacious liveaboard built to a high standard, Emperor Voyager is a 30-meter boat accommodating 20 guests in 7 twin (choice of decks) and 3 double cabins, all ensuite with air-con and a fan. The main deck has a large outdoor relaxing area and a corner bar and drinks area. There are several sofas and tables inside for relaxing. On the upper deck is a home theatre and comfy seating, whilst outside is the dining lounge with tables and chairs with a sea view where you will have all your meals and aperitifs or just chill.
The waves of the Maldives, whilst not super powerful, offer you big barrels and long fun waves – perfect for intermediate and advanced surfers. The surfing season depends on the Atolls but most are good for surfing from April until October, with March and November also good and having the best weather. Swell is consistent here and even on flat days, there’s something to do in the Maldives, like snorkeling, fishing or drinking in the stunning vista.
North Male Atoll has nine surf breaks with most of them being considered World Class Breaks. Two are still ‘private’ waves (Lohi’s and Pasta), where only the resort guests have the right to ride them. However, with diplomacy and politeness sometimes these are open to boat surfers too. Speak to your surf guide and they will advise you if it’s possible and how to go about it.
South Male atoll offers 7-8 waves. It’s 90 minutes from North Male Atoll but still receives smaller waves than those you will see in Jails, Sultans, Cokes and neighbors. Why? If you have a look at the map of the Maldives, the ‘L’ shape of Huvadhoo Atoll (right under South Male Atoll ) ‘shades’ the SE swells giving a smaller size to the surf breaks. But this does not affect the quality of the waves, which are often ‘perfect’! Guru’s is one of the best left handers in the country whilst Riptides is shortish, really fun and often a barreling right hander that comes out of nowhere, Quarter’s right hander gives the chance for both beginners and experienced surfers to share the same wave, with its outside section giving a smooth and ‘fat’ wall, easy to ride and great to practice cut backs, and its inside section gives a fast (often hollow and barreling) fun ride. Whenever a bigger swell hits the country, you definitely will not want to miss what South Male can offer!
This surf vacation will take place in Male, Maldives.
