Join Surf the Greats and their partners from Brisas del Mar to learn to surf in one of the most remote beach communities in Nicaragua! The consistent but forgiving breaks are perfect for beginners with more advanced breaks within reach as you progress during the week. The retreat center is off the beaten path and nestled in the fishing village of Jiquilillo. The friendly villagers greet travelers with open arms and are eager to include you in their daily lives.
Brisas del Mar offers comfort at the same time being connected with nature. Each of their 14 rooms opens facing the Rancho and the Pacific Ocean. All of the rooms are newly renovated and most offer the option of booking with “night-time” air conditioning. You can choose from double or single rooms each with their own private bathroom. Laundry service is available for a minimal cost.
The addition of Brisas del Mar's kitchen allows them to offer you an all-inclusive stay that includes three meals daily, unlimited filtered water, and delicious Nicaraguan coffee as requested. Their bar is always open with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase at reasonable, local prices.
You will be the only surfers in the water the entire time you are down there. The instructors are certified by the International Surfing Association as well as the Yoga Alliance, and will provide you a holistic approach to surfing education to get you up and surfing safely in no time.
This trip is perfect for beginners with some or no surfing experience, but Surf the Greats welcomes intermediate and advanced surfers as well. This surf camp is limited to 15 people and no previous surfing experience is required. The ISA certified surf instructors will provide the guests with top-notch coaching.
Whether you want to learn to surf or become a better surfer, Surf the Greats designed this trip to push you out of your comfort zone in a safe and supportive environment. Surf the Greats records the surf sessions and review the video over cervezas in the evening after dinner. This is proven to be the best method for group and individual analysis for improvement.
This package is designed for people who have never surfed before or those who have tried surfing a few times or even longer periods but are still riding broken waves. Surf the Greats will teach you the sport from the ground up, starting with safety and surf basics such as paddling, popping up, stance, reading waves, and safely dismounting.
Once you have your basic skills down, Surf the Greats will begin to teach you how to paddle past the break safely using different techniques, timing, and how to catch your own green (unbroken) waves. As the week progresses, you will most likely transition into the intermediate option and will have the opportunity to built upon your learning outcomes from the first few days.
This package is designed for those who have a significant amount of surfing experience and want to take their skills to the next level. You should be able to catch your own green (unbroken) waves, paddle out to the lineup, turtle rolling, go left and right, and dismount safely. The instructors will work closely with you to determine areas for improvement and will create a program specific for your own needs.
Upon arrival, you will be tested for your skill levels to assess whether or not you are ready for intermediate lessons. If you fail the test, you will start at the beginner level and will transition into the intermediate group once the instructors are satisfied with your skill level for your safety, as well as the safety of other surfers in the water.
You may switch from beginner to intermediate and vice versa without extra charges. Surf the Greats also has access to a wide variety of boards, and you can try different boards throughout the course of the week.
If you want to come on the trip but feel confident enough to surf on your own, this place is also perfect for you. Intermediate and advanced surfers can also participate in the trip without signing up for the surf camp. Everything but surf lessons and rentals are included in the programming. You still get the same experience but can paddle out with or without Surf the Greats whenever you want.
Do you want to check off a “bucket list” adventure? Well, look no further than boarding down Nicaragua’s youngest active volcano, Cerro Negro. Making the ascent to the 708-meter summit is part of the adventure. Once at the top, you can walk to the edge of the steaming caldera of the volcano. From this vantage point, you can see other volcanoes from the nearby Telica to the giant to the north San Cristobal.
When you are ready to go, you will blast down the side of Cerro Negro and experience an adventure that will not soon be forgotten. After the volcano, you will make a short trip to the historic colonial City of Leon and enjoy a “Nica” lunch on the main square. In Leon, you can explore the huge Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary while taking in the “City of Poets”.
You will also have Saturday night salsa dancing in the village and sunrise kayak on the Padre Ramos Estuary.
A hidden gem, Jiquilillo, is a remote but very accessible fishing village located on the north Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. Once you enter the village, you become abundantly aware this is a special place. The roads are lined with fishermen’s shanties and villagers sorting the day’s catch. Kids enthusiastically greet visitors with friendly waves and huge smiles. Nearby is one of the most bio-diverse nature reserves in the county.
Hotel Brisas del Mar is located on the north side of the village framed by an endless sandy beach and countless coconut palms on the shore. The tranquility of Brisas is second to none, a place where you can “switch off” and lose yourself in the tropical paradise. The hotel is walking distance to the village and the Padre Ramos Estuary. There are several Nica Pulperias (stores) nearby in addition to village restaurants and beachside bars.
Please book your flight to arrive at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA).
Airport shuttle departs Managua after the last guest arrival on May 8 and departs prior to the first guest scheduled flight.
