The waves

Lanzarote is by far the northernmost island of the Canaries. This means it is the most exposed to north, northeast, and northwest swells, which are the most common swells in the Canary Islands. Therefore, this island gets the best and most frequent waves. There are more than 30 high-quality surfing spots on Lanzarote.

  • San Juan

San Juan is a tube leftwards bowling wave with the south-facing wind, at high tide the right can also be ridden, the leftwards wave has two peaks that in good conditions are just one wave, when there is west swell, only the second peak can be ridden, if the swell is north with a little bit of breeze from the south, you’re guaranteed an incredible surfing experience.

  • El Muelle

This is an incredible left-facing wave with 2 barreling sections, watch your head on the second section, more than a few have taken the risk at the end and messed it up. The right can also be ridden, it’s great for maneuvers as it’s much less barreling than the left.

  • El Codito

Found on the west end of the beach, often breaks well leftwards and at 50 meters, you can have a good time riding it rightwards.

The surf spot: Famara Beach

Famara Beach is one of the most famous spots for surfing in Lanzarote. In Famara Beach, you will see dozens of different types of waves. It very much depends on the state of the sandbanks on the seabed and with every strong swell the low points tend to change. As well as El Codito, you can find el Molino, Los Bungalos, el Bunquer, el Palo, the kiters zone and el Papelillo. If you come to Famara beach, you come to a surfing paradise and tranquility.

Located in the center of the Natural Reserve of Archipelago Chinijo, this is a unique place with a special charm that you cannot miss. The beach has a length of approximately six miles of sand with different types of surf spots perfect for all surf levels and the waves are guaranteed because of the constants swells between north and west, sheltered by a cliff of 600 meters high and extraordinary views.

Famara Beach has been recognized numerous times as one of the best beaches in Spain and its protected status make it remains virtually untouched.

This surf camp will be held in Lanzarote, Spain.

Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve

In 1993, Lanzarote was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The island constitutes one of the most protected natural ecosystems in the world. Its natural environment is like no other. As well as the vast expanses of lava land in Timanfaya National Park and Malpaís de La Corona, the island features silica land (Jable de Famara), marine environments and beautiful coastlines.

The channel between Lanzarote and La Graciosa island and the beaches in southeast Lanzarote also stand out as diverse ecosystems containing a variety of species and subspecies of flora and fauna that have adapted to the island's conditions and so are unique to this area. 17% of plants, 60% of nesting birds, 40% of insects and 100% of reptiles are endemic to Lanzarote.

As well as the flora and fauna, the island's inhabitants have had to adapt their lifestyle and traditions to the conditions and have developed a specialized farming culture using techniques such as growing crops on volcanic land, growing cochineal, fishing, and salt production.

The growth of the tourism industry has led to the islanders gradually abandoning traditional farming in favor of the service industry, with a sharp increase in hotels and apartments on the island and some 250, 000 accommodation places available. This relative overcrowding has threatened to push the island natural environment to its limits.

In an attempt to curb this rapid development and make Lanzarote more sustainable as a Biosphere Reserve, a number of policies have been introduced, as part of the Lanzarote Biosphere Plan, an ambitious study aimed at coming up with a global strategy for the sustainable development of the Island.

This programme is especially focussed on the sustainable use and preservation of natural resources as well as biodiversity, the physical environment, and the landscape, supporting the recuperation and restoration of cultural heritage, boosting sustainable development in the local economy and at the same time, minimizing resource consumption and waste generation.

The Lanzarote Biosphere Plan has been designed from the point of view of the public participation of each individual. This change in approach to the island's policies gained international recognition with the declaration of Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve as part of the MAB (Man and Biosphere).

Lanzarote is both the easternmost and northernmost of the Canary Islands. It has a surface area of just over 800 square kilometers and a low relief with few mountains. The maximum altitude is less than 700 metres below sea level despite it being a volcanic island.
