The ideal spot for a beachside getaway, Surf N Stay Whangamata is a great place to base yourself when you're looking to take in all the best that Coromandel has to offer with accommodation available in the form of a great range of dorms, a private room, and a large studio unit. Onsite is a surf school and an equipment hire store with sea kayaks and stand up paddle boards, great to explore the Bay of Islands with full-length Rip Curl wetsuits. They can cater to absolutely everyone with their quiver of boards - whether you're a total grom or you've carved more than a few barrels in your time, this beach-side haven's got everything you need.

If that sounds all a bit too active for you and you would like to have a chilled holiday on Coromandel, this town gives that with uncrowded beaches to explore, trails with New Zealand native bush, to amazing waterfalls and swimming holes. Fun shopping and yummy cafes in town, all just within a five-minute walk.

At summer time, Whangamata turns into New Zealanders’ favorite holiday resort, creating a Kiwi holiday vibe with many families and surfers on the world-class break called the Whangamata Bar, and one of the best east coast breaks. This off-the-tourist-track gem of a place has hidden itself for years. You won't believe the amazing things to see and things to do until they tell you, or have you already heard? Their newly set up family run and owned accommodation will make you feel welcome and leave you with a smile.

With all their accommodation, they offer free Internet and a complimentary breakfast that is served between 08:30 and 09:30. Fresh sheets and bedding are provided. They have a kitchen with fridge, oven, and microwave. The barbecue outside can be used to cook meat, etc. Parking is available in front of the hostel and if full, just on the street close by. They can organize transport for you.

The Drifter Room

The Drifter shared room consists of four single beds set as bunks. Drifter dorm bunks are spacious, allowing guests to sit comfortably on the bed whilst relaxing with a good book or perhaps planning your next big adventure with the use of the free Wi-Fi.

Whanga Bar Dorm

The Whangamata Bar Dorm consists of six single beds set as bunks.

This is a special package designed for intermediate surfers wishing to progress to the next level. Students must meet the following requirements to join this program:

  • Catch their own waves without help
  • Deal with currents and waves
  • Take off on a green wave

If you have already joined Surf N Stay New Zealand’s Learn To Surf program or meet the requirements stated above, let's step it up and aim for the big moves! Within this program, you will be assisted by Mauro, an ISA level two certified instructor with more than 10 years of coaching experience.

Surf N Stay New Zealand’s intensive surf program begins in the water. Your instructor will carry out a mixture of in-water coaching time along with filming to assess your strengths and weaknesses, ensuring that you receive the best-tailored advice going forward. Next up you move to the sand to focus on the theory regarding currents, crowds, positioning on the lineup, maneuvers, and body mechanics analysis.

Following this beach-based tuition you will head back to the camp to watch your filmed session and receive constructive comment on your performance. This routine continues until the end of the program. You will also have the opportunity to experience some more advanced spots within the area of the Coromandel, trying out different waves at different conditions of wind and tide.

You will surf in the morning with a morning group which will give you a good warm-up for the day! After lunch, your instructors will take you to a second lesson where you will keep practicing the techniques you’ve learned in the morning.

Surf N Stay New Zealand will start you in the white water with special boards that will make you stand in no time. Once you get the basics, they will guide you through more advanced techniques so you can start surfing on your own. To ensure your safety, they will cover ocean awareness, equipment, and etiquette, just to name some of the topics their instructors will touch basis on.

The groups include one instructor to every six students and if the waves get bigger or the crowd increases, they might even do a one-on-one ratio just so you are safe in the water. Of course, Surf N Stay New Zealand wants to avoid big waves and the crowd, that’s why they have two cars available for customers so they can take you to the best waves of the day.

Everyone will enjoy improving their technique with helpful guidance from the certified instructors; the fun is guaranteed! At the end of this course, you will be ready to join Surf N Stay New Zealand’s Level Two program. An in-depth coaching with video analysis can also be available but is an extra option at an extra cost.

After eight years in Brazil where his first son was born, he kept his dream alive of expanding to other destinations and opened a surf camp in Whangamata, New Zealand. Mauro teaches surfing with a great passion for the sport and the local community and run the Surf N Stay adventure hostel to let surfers and visitors from all around the world experience this beautiful part of the world.

This surf course takes place in Whangamata, North Island, New Zealand. The welcoming surf town of Whangamata with its large main beach is set against a backdrop of the native forest park. The waves at this large beach break offer perfect conditions for surf beginners to learn in gentle yet consistent waves. When the famous surf break at the left of the bay named ‘The Whanga Bar’ is on, it creates a beautiful, long left-hander, starting with a steep drop in, a long barrel section, and a nice, long wall. Ashore lie Clark Island and Donut Island which can be reached by kayak or stand up paddle board.

The Coromandel Peninsula is steep and hilly and is largely covered in temperate rainforest. Just inland from the town, the Coromandel Forest Park is the place for hiking and mountain biking, and the beautiful Wentworth waterfall is close by. Surf N Stay is located just a short stroll away from the beach with shops and restaurants only a few minutes away.
