Who doesn’t love being treated like a pro? Each morning, photographers and videographers invest hours on the beach shooting wave after wave, ride after ride, so that when surfers go home, they leave with more than just memories. They’re given a photo / video package with all the best high-resolution photo files and a professionally edited movie with all the best footage of the week. Campers also get to watch the raw footage of their surfing after each session, which is one of the best ways to improve your surfing (and to learn not to take yourself too seriously).
Ross, the director, is a life-long surfer from Virginia Beach, Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and Masters from Reformed Theological Seminary. He’s the proud husband of Hannah Byrd and father of three amazing kids. For over a decade he has led summer camp sessions in the Outer Banks, in Virginia, and even internationally in Nicaragua and China. As a surfer, he has ridden waves around the globe – from Central America to Hawaii, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and Fiji.
PJ is super stoked to be returning for his 5th summer at Surf Hatteras. This past year he got engaged to and married the lovely former counselor Mallorie Ables and they are now neighbors to the camp down in Avon. PJ graduated from UNC Wilmington with a degree in film studies and now does carpentry on the island, along with some film projects here and there. PJ also helps lead the Three 1 Six ministries to youth down in Frisco.
Thomas returns to Surf Hatteras this summer for his fourth year as a counselor and surf instructor (working select weeks). Growing up in Virginia Beach, he has been surfing most of his life, and he loves the beach. He has had the chance to surf world-class waves in Puerto Rico, California, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, but surfing in the Outer Banks is definitely his favorite. Thomas just graduated from the University of Virginia, where he also helped out with the lacrosse program at Saint Anne’s Belfield School in Charlottesville.
Carter, a veteran surf instructor at Surf Hatteras, is entering his third year at the University of Virginia. Hailing from Virginia Beach, he fell in love with surfing as a kid through his father's instruction. At the university, he is a self-proclaimed poet whose passions range from tater-tot Tuesday at the cafeteria to genuine talks about the meaning of life. At Surf Hatteras, Carter continues the long-standing staff tradition of “Spaceship Earth”, an experimental music project, which entails sequined clothes and sub-par music. Please keep all hands and feet inside the vehicle.
Drake is a native of Virginia Beach. Tossed on a boogie board when he was just five years old, he started surfing not too long after and hasn't looked back. He loves the ocean! For the last few years he has helped lead a ministry to middle school kids called Wildlife and plans to continue doing so through college. Drake begins at Liberty University in the fall, where he will be studying education.
Growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, Ian fell in love with the ocean as a child. Surfing became his passion in high school when he was able to drive himself to the beach to surf (practically everyday). In college, Ian packed up and drove west to Colorado to work as a back country backpacking guide leading hikes for teenagers, and it was there that he fell in love with the mountains. He is now a senior at Old Dominion University studying Parks and Recreation, seeking every opportunity to be outdoors, preferably riding waves.
Robbie hails from Virginia Beach, Va, and is a sophomore at Sewanee, where he plays lacrosse. Having attended Surf Hatteras four times as a kid, he now follows in the hallowed tradition of his oldest sister Hillary as a counselor. Robbie has lived and worked on Hatteras Island with 316 Ministries in the past, and has a deep connection with this place. As a youngen, he lived in San Diego where his father taught him how to surf. He has loved surfing and pretty much all water-related sports all his life and is stoked to share that love this summer.
