Why Stay at Surf Expedition Surf Camp in Costa Rica?

Because you deserve a break

The breathtaking view from the 20,000-meter square property located directly in front of the ocean and surrounded by lush nature, no wifi and many hammocks for your downtime will create the perfect environment for you to take a step back on your busy life and think about the changes you want to make.

Because you appreciate excellent food

Carefully made with love and fresh ingredients from Surf Expedition Nicaragua's organic garden by their co-founding chef, the amazing food you’ll get when you come home from the surf will be the tastiest meals you’ve ever eaten.

To feel better

During your stay, 6 'yoga for surf' classes will be offered on the outdoor yoga platform by the team's experienced yogi. Stretch, improve your balance and relax your muscles while looking at the ocean and listening to the birds and monkeys around you.

To surf better

You will get in-depth personalized coaching in your preferred language (French and English available) during every surf session. They will film a minimum of 3 of your surf sessions and review your technique so that you can see and understand what you need to focus on.

To make new friends

Meet other like-minded travelers who are interested in surfing and create new friendships and connections for future surf trips.

For the carefully chosen surf spots (if you keep it a secret)

You will be taken surfing to different waves that not many people know, which means fewer people in the water (many times you’re the only one(s)), more space and more waves to learn on, for a safer experience.

To optimize your surfing time

Surf Expedition Nicaragua make the effort to optimize the day according to the optimal tides for surfing. This means you’ll probably be offered to wake up very early for a dawn patrol surf session at sunrise when the conditions are optimal for surfing, and surf at least 2 surf sessions per day. Each surf session is 2-3 hours, depending on the energy level of the students and tides.

For the adventure, without the hassle

The team will take you on a boat trip to explore and surf different kinds of waves to expand your surf knowledge. You’ll do a picnic on the beach in front of the beautiful turquoise water and they will guide you through a waterfall jungle hike where you’ll see monkeys, toucans, and beautifully colored lizards.

For the waves

The surf camp is located a few minutes from the longest waves of warm water in the world, and have many other options around for beginner surfers. The area is blessed with many point breaks, right and left, which probably will be the longest rides of your life and help you improve faster than short rides on beach breaks.

For the local experience

The team have teamed up with the nicest and most knowledgeable locals of the area to share with you the beauty of their country. Experience the most beautiful horseback riding trek on the beach along the coastline and into the hills of an indigenous reserve and learn how to make your own chocolate bar from the cacao seeds with a local artisan.

Included excursions

There will be a boat trip to explore remote waves and picnic on the beach, possibly see dolphins and whales on the way.

The surf camp is located in Puntarenas Province.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Golfito Airport (GLF). Transfer from and to this airport is included in your package if you take the suggested flight itinerary. The surf lodge is located about 1.5 hours from Golfito Airport. To get there you need to take a short 50 minutes flight from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) to Golfito (GLF). Nature Air and Sansa Airlines have flights to Golfito.

Most flights are arriving in the afternoon/evening to Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), if this is your case, you should plan to arrive a day earlier to Costa Rica to take an internal flight to Golfito Airport (GLF) the next day. Surf Expedition Nicaragua team will pick you up in Golfito in the afternoon. You can also take the 7 a.m. direct bus from San José to Paso Canoa with Tracopa and the team will pick you up at the bus terminal.

Surf Expedition Nicaragua can recommend an affordable place to stay in Alajuela or in San José located 5 minutes from the airport or bus terminal if needed. They work with a team of trustworthy taxi drivers who can pick you up and take care of your transport between airport, lodging, and bus terminal/airport and will make sure you’re getting the right bus ticket.

Between 30 and 60 days before your departure, Surf Expedition Nicaragua will send you an email with a proposed flight so that all participants arrive on the same flight. The shuttle is free if you book that flight or arrive +/-30 minutes of that flight arrival time. If you arrive on an earlier or later different flight, they can send you a trustworthy chauffeur to pick you and the cost is 80 USD (day time) or 85 USD (night time). The drive to the first destination is about 1.5 hours in Southern Costa Rica (from Golfito Airport). Surf Expedition Nicaragua strongly recommends using a reputable taxi service to avoid taxi scams.

Arrival by bus

Alternatively you can also take a bus for 6-8 hours from Tracopa bus terminal in San José and take a direct bus (try to get the Costanera route) to Paso Cano (border with Panama) and get a taxi for around 60 USD.
