Jagabay Resort is located in its own tropical garden, right on the sea frontline. Most of the rooms are air-conditioned with a balcony and beautiful ocean view. All the hotel premises are covered by free Wi-Fi. There is also a small inner swimming pool and the beach where you can relax in comfortable beach chairs. You can choose to stay in a single room or beach cabana.

Lesson 1: Pop-up

First of all, you will learn personal surfing safety rules. During the theory part, you’ll find out where the waves come from and how to deal with rips and currents (quite tricky stuff). Also, you’ll demolish some common myths about the ocean such as how dangerous sharks are.

After that, it will be the time to practice. If you’re familiar with snowboarding or any other boardsport, you already know what your leading foot is. But, in case this is your first step into the board universe, you’ll identify a leading foot with a little help from your coach. Then, the coach will show you how to pop up on the board.

After practicing for just couple minutes with board simulators, you’ll surely be able to repeat these unusual movements quite confidently. The coach will help you to pick the most suitable board depending on your body type. Then, the “wet” part of the lesson will begin.

On day one, you’ll be practicing on “white water” or broken waves. Under the coach’s careful supervision, you’ll ride your first broken wave. During this lesson, you won’t go too deep into the water, not further than breast deep. So, it won’t be scary at all. Otherwise, it will be a big fun no matter how old you are and what sports background you have.

Lesson 2: Improving pop-up

Like any other sport, surfing requires a good workout before getting started. So, you’ll see a few simple exercises that help you feel safe and confident on the ocean. Persistent practice is the key to success. You will practice the art of popping up on board simulators, remember your mistakes, and try to avoid them.

During this lesson, you'll meet the balance board which is a beginner’s great helper. Your coach will tell you how to deal with it and how to avoid falling. It will be a simple but very effective balance trainer and will surely become your favorite toy for the next few days. But, don’t get too relaxed because after practicing with the balance board, you’ll go back into the ocean.

Lesson 3: Basic turns in white water

After you know how to pop up on the board and ride straight towards the shore, it will be the time to learn how to control the board and make your first turn. The coach will show you how to perform "turns" on the white water. Also, you will get some special exercises for sharpening your turn skills on the shore. During your practice on the ocean, you will make your first basic turns and try to ride the broken wave.

Lesson 4: Surfing etiquette

This will be an extremely important lesson and your first lineup session. You will be going to a place where real surfers deal with real waves. First, you will need to learn a bit more theories. In this lesson, you’ll learn about the parts of a wave, how to enter the water, carry the board over the wave, paddle directly onto the wave, and coup with the board (Eskimo roll). Additionally, you will get familiar with surfing etiquette. At the lineup, you will catch your first real wave. The coach will always be right next to you to tell you what to do.

This program will take place at Weligama Bay in Sri Lanka. Weligama Bay is the best beach break in Sri Lanka and a perfect spot for beginners. This place is a pretty quiet spot with some small cozy hotels surrounded by palm trees. The lineup here is usually as clean and empty as a flyleaf. Weligama Bay is the perfect place for surfing from October until March.

Weligama’s waves are perfect for both beginners and advanced surfers. There are several different peaks at this spot, so you can always find a nice place to improve your surfing skills. Because of the sandy bottom and friendly waves, Weligama Bay is an excellent place to train the bottom turn and learn how to ride the wave. The difference between high and low tide is kept at the minimum, so you can surf literally at any time you want.

Just about 5 kilometers southward from Weligama, you can enjoy Mirissa Left reef break. Depending on the weather and ocean conditions, this spot offers perfect endless lefts. Meanwhile, from the opposite direction, you can find another great spot such as Lazy Left. This aptly-named location is perfectly suited for beginners because it’s a great place to enjoy slow left. There’s also a distinct channel which adds a perfect lift back to the lineup.

There are few other reef breaks such as Mirissa Right, Madia, and Rams around Weligama. They are good for advanced and beginner surfers as well when the swell is not too big.

  • 4 surfing lessons
  • 4 to 6-day course duration (10 hours)
  • 7 nights’ accommodation
  • Daily breakfast
  • Surfboard, leash, and surf outfit rental
