  • Timothy Wood

A hybrid bad boy brings his USA-German heritage to Surf Camp Byron Bay with stunning effect. Timmy's big infectious smile that greets you at the registration desk masks a hard core surfer who brings years of international surf instructing experience in California, Morocco, Spain and Bali to your lesson or course of lessons. A keen surfer himself, Tim is passionate about people reaching their full surfing potential. But be warned, he does mistake dolphins for sharks and has trouble pronouncing some Aussie words.

  • Marko McGrath

He is the legend of the town and local surf education. There is not much to surf instructing Marko has not done, or does not know about. He has teamed up with Jayme in Byron Bay for more than a decade to provide first-rate surfing lessons and ocean education to countless satisfied surfers. Markos local and international coaching and surfing experience in Portugal, Morocco, Sri Lanka and Indonesia has created the great all-rounder, a legendary party animal, and true survivor of the surfing lifestyle.

  • Geoffrey Bruce Watson

A warhorse of the waves and a surfing machine known as Geoff is still entering and winning surf competitions after spending years on the Pro circuits. Living in Japan for a long time has also given Geoff a distinct patience and courteous manner, and with his own surfing expertise, you are guaranteed a surfing experience and carefully taught skills to last a lifetime. If you are lucky enough to complete a surf and stay course with Geoff, you could indeed end up surfing like a pro just like him! This Gold Coast stalwart might even share some of his mystery surf spots with you.

"These guys are awesome! Not only did I learn how to surf in a matter of days but I enjoyed getting to know and spending time with the crew also. I was lucky to meet all of the surf teachers. They are all enthusiastic surfers and can convey their passion and their know-how to the people. You guys rock! Keep up the good work!"

"I can't recommend this place highly enough! All three of us were welcomed with open arms by Tim and the rest of the crew. Simon and Jeff were as enthusiastic in the first hour as they were in the last of the third day- which was extremely helpful! Surfing aside, the boys treated us like mates and were always on hand if we had any issues. If you are planning on learning to surf, or just giving it a go- this is the place to do it! Thanks again to Tim and the boys."

"I have to say that this is the best hostel I have ever stayed at. I initially booked for 3 nights and ended up staying on for 6 and even then, I did not want to leave. It has such a good vibe and the staff is great and so friendly. It is clean and there is always something fun going on. I would highly recommend having at least one surf lesson as the instructors are brilliant and it is such an enjoyable experience! The back door takes you onto the beach and the front door takes you into town which is about a 5 minute walk. You can bring in your own booze which I think really helps when wanting to socialize and meet people at the hostel, but they also have a curfew of 10:30 p.m. which is handy if you want an early night. I have nothing but positive things to say about Backpackers Inn and I will certainly be going back in the near future and cannot wait!"

"My sister and I stayed for 2 nights here whilst we were backpacking up the East Coast. It was the first hostel we had stayed in and we were so pleasantly surprised! The staff was so welcoming and friendly, particularly the Northern Irish lady, even though they were constantly busy! We also booked a surfing lesson which was amazing. Our instructor was really cool and very patient with us and we just had so much fun. The rooms were clean, much bigger than the 4-bed rooms we had stayed in before, and the kitchen and communal areas were comfortable. Everyone was really sociable there, but also had to be quiet by 10:30 p.m. which is good if you have got an early start the following morning. Definitely recommended!"
