Important:

SunsetLoft Guest House takes the water problem in South Africa very serious and therefore they only use borehole water from their own fountains in the guesthouse! Therefore they are completely independent at the moment. They ask guests to use water responsibly and make sure to help saving water wherever possible!

Location

In general, the area around Cape Town offers superb wind and kitesurf spots with conditions that vary from spot to spot. Between Cape Point and the City of Cape Town, you’ll find some tough wavespots set in a beautiful rough natural landscape.

The waves are normally bigger than in Table Bay and the wind is often very strong. Mast high waves and wind for the 4.0 sail are quite normal down at the Cape, the usual southeaster blows sideshore from the left as in most spots in South Africa.

In order to surf a spot down at the Cape, you should start early, sometimes the wind becomes quite strong later in the day. The most popular of these spots is “Platboom” because of its superb conditions for wave riding amidst its amazing setting.

The area between the City of Cape Town and Melkbos is called Table Bay. In its center is Sunset Beach where Sunset Loft is situated. The wind blows sideoff to sideonshore from the left. The waves vary according to how far they have traveled and you will get a swell between one and five meters, very seldom there is no wave at all.

Sunset beach is normally the first spot that works when the southeaster starts blowing. Here you find some very clean but short waves - perfect for wave riding. The waves brake rather close to the beach and are therefore easier to predict. If the wind gets too strong you should travel further north where the wind decreases and the waves become bigger.

Big Bay is a good option if you are looking for a spot that offers great conditions for both wave riding and jumping. At the Van Riebeck beach near Melkbos (15-minute drive from the house) you'll find nice and steep waves and a lot of space.

Like everywhere else, Cape Town has undergone a massive growth in the kitesurfing population and it´s no wonder Cape Town offers superb conditions. Most of the kitesurfers are at dolphin beach about a five-minute drive from the house. There are nearly no windsurfers, the wind blows constantly and slightly side on shore. The far stretched beach offers space for everybody.

Novices are normally a bit further upwind whereas the cracks surf right in front of the parking. The standards are quite high in South Africa, as a lot of professionals come here in the European winter for training purposes. There is always a spot where the wind is strong enough for kiting.

Sunset Beach is a world class kite and windsurfing spot. So if there is wind, there is a big show going on and you are invited! Have walks or runs on the endless white beach, enjoy stunning views onto Cape Town and the Table Mountain, sit in the front row for the amazing sunsets (no wonder why it’s called Sunset Beach), and practice yoga or your own fitness program on the beach or in the garden. And if you are lucky, you might also catch sight of a group of whales or dolphins!

The good thing about Sunset Beach is that the beach is not just big but it is huge! An ideal place for a downwinder.

Things to do (optional)

  • A hike on Table Mountain on of the various trails is a must! You could also use the cablecar to get on the top or down! A nice thing is also to watch the sunrise and begin the day with a breakfast on Table Mountain.
  • Lion’s Head with it’s stunning views over the city and the ocean should also be on your list!
  • As Table Mountain and Lion’s Head are sometimes a bit busy and crowded (mainly on the weekends) think about climbing Devil’s Peak, the characteristic “left side” from table mountain. Here you are mostly almost alone and can enjoy a 360 degree view over the Western Cape!
  • A trip to the Cape of Good Hope is just amazing! In addition to the stunning scenery you can meet some baboons and ostriches very close. When you go up early, you can link this trip with a drive along the coast of false bay and visit Simonstown with the famous penguins on Boulder Beach, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg.
  • The South African wines are superb! Go on a wine tour and take the chance of a wine tasting that is offered from all of the wineries around Franschoek, Stellenbosch or Constantia. Most of them have also outstanding restaurants - Sunset Loft hopes their restaurant guide will help you a little bit with your choice.
  • If you feel like discovering the vibrant megacity of Cape Town, park your car at Long Street or Kloof Street and stroll around the shops and cafés in the city center.
