Join this surf and yoga retreat that brings challenge in both mental and physical senses. Learn how Vinyasa yoga supports strength building for surfing, learn how to use yoga and meditation to catch waves, and learn how Yin yoga restores and heals after a day in the waves. Providing connection between the mind, body, soul, and the ocean, surf yoga is a beloved way to unwind and escape from daily routine.
During the retreat, you will stay in an accommodation provided by Summersalt Yoga, located in Lourinhã, Portugal. The accommodation consists of two beautiful houses, fully equipped, and is comfortable for resting after a day full of yoga and surfing. The villas share a large terrace with lounge and winter garden as well as an access to a larger garden to relax and enjoy some downtime.
Yoga and surfing are quite complimentary. You must give your undivided attention to both. Any moments of distraction can have negative repercussions. Both encourage you to see each moment, feel each step, and develop a connection to make it all work together.
The mental practice of yoga teaches you to focus, engage, and integrate step by step the physical with the mental to not become overwhelmed with the task at hand. In some cases, it is about deciding whether to go for the wave or let it pass. In other cases, it means to stay steady in effort.
This yoga and meditation classes are suitable for everyone, from a beginner to a longer practicing yogi. You will practice Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, and Restorative yoga as well as utilize various pranayama (breathing) techniques in each class. Each session has time devoted to meditation and all sessions incorporate effort of self-awareness, mindfulness, and consciousness.
The morning sessions are dedicated to preparing your body and mind for a day of surf. An energetic flow that utilizes poses specifically targeted to open and to prepare the body for surfing techniques like pop-ups and balance as well as focus and endurance of mind to help steady yourself on the waves. To help you release your muscles and unwind from surfing, the afternoon classes focus on Restorative or Yin yoga.
Vanessa spent a year of globetrotting, where her yoga practice grew beyond the asanas, into a spiritual and inspirational enlightenment from a variety of sources around the world. She uses those personal experiences infused with mindfulness as dedication to her continuous growth, as well as guidance for her students. When she is not on her mat, you can find Vanessa surfing some waves all year long, snowboarding in the winter, or just being content with life.
The surf and yoga retreat will be held in Lourinhã, Portugal. The surfing will take place on the beach called Praia da Areia Branca (white sand beach). Lourinhã is placed within countryside quietness and peace with amazing views. It is a traditional Portuguese coastal village with a long sweeping sandy beach suitable for both swimming and surfing.
There are a number of bars, restaurants, and cafes lining the promenade which runs the full length of a beach. The waves of Areia Branca Beach are among the best for either learning or engaging in surfing.

In the mornings, you will enjoy a breakfast buffet with various options to fuel for the day: coffee, tea, orange juice, cereal, jams, bread, honey, butter, cheeses, fruit, eggs, and more. For dinner, you will have delicious vegetarian dishes, barbecue, pizzas, fish for those who are interested, and some Portuguese delicacies. There is also a nice barbecue and stone pizza oven in the garden.
