Ranga looks forward to welcoming you very much, and to talking and relaying the many things that he has learned in life, and at the same time learning too.
West of the road from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, Kitulgala is a popular adventure-sports center located amid thickly forested hills. Most visitors are young and energetic from Colombo, but foreign visitors are also starting to discover the region's white-water rafting, jungle trekking, bird watching, and cave exploration.
The town’s other main claim to fame is that David Lean filmed his 1957 Oscar-winning epic "Bridge on the River Kwai" here on the banks of the Kelaniya River, though there's little physical evidence left to see.
A few kilometers from Kithulgala is a large cave system where the 28,500-year-old remains of early humans were discovered. Many hotels in the area can arrange a guide to the Belilena Caves.
The 98-meter-high waterfalls of Aberdeen in Nuwara Eliya District are formed by the Kehelgamuwa, a tributary of the Kelani River. Aberdeen Falls, definitely among the most picturesque waterfalls on the island, is named after the nearby tea plantation, Aberdeen. Many tea plantations in Sri Lanka bear British names, Scottish toponyms in particular.
According to a typical folk belief in Sri Lanka’s highlands, Aberdeen Falls are connected with the Lakshapana Falls further south by a 5-kilometer long tunnel. Both waterfalls carry less water since water reservoirs and hydroelectric power stations were established in the area of the Kelani River tributaries between Maskeliya and Kithulgala. However, except for extraordinarily dry periods, the Kehelgamuwa River at Aberdeen Falls does not dry out completely.
A small observation platform is constructed close to the natural pool below Aberdeen Falls, which is picturesquely framed by rock surfaces. Despite this visitors’ terrace, travelers are rarely seen at Aberdeen Falls. It’s still an off-the-beaten-path destination.
The train trip from Ella to Kandy in Sri Lanka, or the other way around, is considered to be one of the most beautiful train trips in the world. This train ride is seven hours long and takes you through stunning landscapes of green and lush tea plantations and mountain views.
The train trip between Hatton and Ella is one of the highlights of Sri Lanka in the Sri Lankan Tour Hub team's opinion, and they love it. The train trip Ella – Hatton, and Hatton – Ella is very popular, both among tourists and the locals. Sri Lankan Tour Hub highly recommends the tour.
Welcome to everyone’s favorite hill-country village, the place to ease off the travel accelerator with a few leisurely days resting in your choice of some of the country’s best guesthouses.
The views through Ella Gap are stunning, and on a clear night, you can even spy the subtle glow of the Great Basses lighthouse on Sri Lanka’s south coast.
Don’t be too laid-back though; definitely make time for easygoing walks through tea plantations to temples, waterfalls, and viewpoints. After building up a hiking-inspired appetite, look forward to Sri Lanka’s best home-cooked food and a reviving cuppa.
In recent years, Ella's popularity has soared and the town's attractiveness has been somewhat compromised by some multistory concrete eyesores.
Framed by soaring highlands on its northern boundary, the Udawalawa National Park is one of the world's best places to see wild elephants. Largely comprised of grasslands and bush forests, it's also one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka for game spotting.
With herds of elephants, wild buffalo, sambar and spotted deer, and giant squirrel, this Sri Lankan national park is one of the nation's finest. In fact, for elephant-watching, Udawalawa often surpasses many of the most famous East African national parks. The park, which centers on the 308.2-square-kilometer Udawalawa Reservoir, is lightly vegetated, but it has a stark beauty and the lack of dense vegetation makes game-watching easy.
There are also mongooses, jackals, water monitor lizards, lots of crocodiles, sloth bears, and the occasional leopard. There are 30 varieties of snakes and a wealth of birdlife – 210 species at last count; northern migrants join the residents between November and April.
Weligama (meaning "sandy village") is an interesting blend of a lively fishing town and beach resort. The sprawling main settlement and the coastal road are somewhat scruffy and not that easy on the eye, but you'll find the sandy beach attractive once you're away from the main section; there are a couple of cove beaches west of the center.
Weligama's benign beach break is ideal for novice surfers and many independent travelers learn to ride their first waves here. After some fun in the ocean, you can marvel at (and feast on) the denizens of the deep, who end their days being hacked up and sold from roadside fish stalls.
On this holiday, you will be served with daily breakfast included in the price. For the rest of the meals, you can have the best local food experience as well as the western and Sri Lankan foods in local restaurants.
