Surrounding us were coconut trees, sand, clear blue water and the sound of waves crashing on the beach. Nothing pretentious here. Perfect environment for relaxing and enjoying water sports. Everything is provided, just show up each morning for breakfast to get the activity agenda for the day. There were 2 options for our group for the morning and 2 again for the afternoon. There is always a 3rd option - hammock surfing!
My husband and I tent camp for most of our vacations, so the cabanas at Slickrock at Long Caye were great for us! I've read many of the reviews and agree with all the positive comments I've read.
Our group got along very well and we had excellent staff. Our guides, Shane, Carlos and Elsa were attentative to our interests and abilities. The activities were well planned and guided. Our cook, Laverne, provided us with fresh, home cooked food each day - delicious! Pol, the island handyman and boat driver was friendly and kept many of us supplied with fresh coconut water. Safety was very important to all the folks on the island and the staff cleaned the "facilities" every day. The whole island is pristine.
I'm gonna be real and admit that this was a once in a lifetime trip for us, and we agree that we got more than our money's worth at Long Caye. We recommend Slickrock's Long Caye Resort for a great island adventure. If you plan to go, follow the recommendations on the website and bring the items on their packing list. Very important are river booties and open back fins for snorkeling. Also, we wore Hydroskin 0.5 pants on every water expedition and were always comfortable during our Mid-January trip.
We had a couple of extra days in Belize after our island adventure and chose to go into the jungle for a couple of days. We found Ian Anderson's Cave Branch Jungle Lodge, recommended. We did one cave adventure, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM). If you have extra time, add this to your trip.
