During this camp, you will stay in a shared standard cabana. Single occupancy will apply extra charges depending on the time of the year. Ruuk Village offers three individual cabanas built to represent the simple lifestyle of a fisherman family. Spending your holidays in these cabanas will give you an authentic experience of how it is to live in a typical Sri-Lankan fisherman's house with your own open-air shower and a shared WC block.

Each cabana offers its own private terrace or sitting area with a hammock and own private open-air shower experience and can be occupied as a double or shared or single. These cabanas are spread over the coconut plantation allowing you enough space and tranquility. These cabanas are perfect for travelers searching for an authentic experience of 'art of Sri-Lankan' living. Most of the villagers still live in houses that are built with natural resources from around their living areas.

You will have a unique experience with the local team. Since Kalpitiya is not a crowded place with all the modern-day 'bad living habits', you will be able to:

  • Disconnect
  • Shutdown
  • Recharge

Ruuk Village takes extra care to reduce their ecological footprint. They avoid green-washing. They not only talk about sustainability but they practice sustainable living.

Ruchira Fernando

A true off-the-grid accommodation away from the mass tourism

Sometimes you find yourself on a holiday only to reluctantly and unexpectedly be booked into a hotel or resort that is heavily crammed with other tourists. This in-turn puts you in a position where the staff is overwhelmed and unable to attend to your personal needs on time.

For all those who are in search of a place that is not packed with 50 other guests, Ruuk Village can offer you exactly what you are looking for. Ruuk Village is a compact and chilled out destination that offers an authentic Sri Lankan vibe right by the main kiting lagoon.

The ocean is just beyond the lagoon making Ruuk Village convenient for everything that Kalpitiya is famous for. They take pleasure in providing comfort and have ensured that all their cabanas are equipped with private hammocks and cozy sitting areas.

For added privacy, all nine cabanas are spaciously spread out across the premises. Each cabana stands on its own, offering you the extended privacy and flexibility to enjoy your holidays looking over the garden towards the lagoon. Their team takes pride in caring for the surrounding garden filled with love and passion, making it a truly enjoyable experience.

Simplicity is the new luxury

Their motto is simplicity. They demonstrate this to the local community by being an example for others to follow. They are mindful of their carbon footprint and strongly believe that having the opportunity to be a part of this beautiful tropical island, they themselves want to experience it in its raw and natural element and share this incredible atmosphere with their guests.

They intentionally have strayed away from air-conditioners because the warmth of the sun along with the consistent breeze from the sea has never harmed anyone.

They are lucky enough to have this all year round and only hope to give you a taste of paradise for your short holiday. They can never understand why others would build a swimming pool right by the beach. The running waters of the lagoon and the consistent waves of the sea fulfill the real definition of an infinity pool.

Hence, they have proudly decided to keep it this way without disrupting the endless beauty of Kalpitiya picturesque outdoors and to preserve the sweet water resources of Kalpitiya.

You will be served full board meals included in the price every day including tropical fruits, Sri Lankan rice and curry for lunch, special dinners, and tea or coffee and drinking water. Articulated as the 12 food dishes you should try in Sri Lanka, CNN travel elaborately depicted some of the savory dishes that are available across the entire island. Sri Lankan cuisine and its authentic flavors have derived from centuries of experience with spices and herbs which have been passed on from generation to generation.

At Ruuk Village, they are sincerely dedicated to the tradition and beyond, as they share their mouthwatering dishes with their guests. Authenticity does not drive from just the name of the dish or the type, but from the way it is carefully prepared. The method of cooking in clay pots on top of open fire conceals the spices and flavors in a natural way enabling each pinch of spice and herbs to enter the main dish, only to burst out from within and produce extraordinary flavors instantly as it enters your mouth.

Prepared with secret recipes that include lots of love, the local 'queens of Kalpitiya’s kitchens' who have fed more than one generation present these impeccable dishes for you, highlighting the reasons why their guests keep coming back for more. Their homemade recipes that are prepared exclusively at Ruuk Village leave a lasting memory that stands out above the sun, wind, and beautiful beaches. It is not every day you get to enjoy grandmother’s cooking while on holiday.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request at an additional cost of 59 EUR. Getting immediate assistance for transportation to the village can be complicated without making any prior arrangements.

The distance from the airport to Kalpitiya is around 144 kilometers, and Ruuk Village recommends all travelers to hop into one of their partnered transportation service providers. This would enable you to relax throughout the length of your journey, not having to worry about navigating your taxi to Kalpitiya.

For those who seek the more affordable adventure of taking public transport, the trip will take approximately six hours to get from the airport to Kalpitiya. When using public transport and speaking to locals, please keep in mind that distance in Sri-Lanka is normally measured in time instead of distance. They do not recommend taking public transport after 6:00 p.m. This is mainly due to the fact that the connection later on from Puttalam to Kalpitiya could be tricky, and taking public transport when it is dark in a totally strange country could also leave negative impressions.

Ruuk Village also provides a special pickup service that utilizes their customized Volkswagen old-school surfer van. It offers a unique experience and maximizes comfort. They work with external partners for transport. Their trained attendants will meet you at the airport to assist you with your luggage and transfer you to the village.

Their attendants are local and can be very helpful with regards to any situations at the airport regarding clearance or handling any possible delays with your luggage. They will also offer you the best advice in converting your currency and answer any other questions you may have to make your entire Sri-Lankan journey convenient and comfortable. Please feel free to contact them in advance to pre-book your transfer to ensure availability.
