Pura Vida Adventures has planned an adventurous, rejuvenating retreat that will help jump-start your New Year’s resolutions. Their beautiful beachfront resort is the perfect place to unwind and bring in the new year with healthy cuisine, full-service spa treatments, and an oceanfront pool, steps away from the beach. Their caring team of highly-trained professionals will guide you through your vacation with surfing, yoga, plus a special day trip to the waterfalls in neighboring Montezuma, and an epic New Year’s eve party.
For the first day, you can check-in at the resort at any time but make sure you arrive in time to attend the 6:00 p.m. welcome dinner. Your end-of-camp event will be a dawn-patrol surf session and breakfast brunch on the last morning so plan enough time to have one last tropical smoothie and plate of local gallo pinto (breakfast rice and beans).
During this camp, you will take part in a day trip to Montezuma waterfalls and enjoy the sunset at 'Vista de Olas' panoramic, mountaintop swim-up bar.
Cris has been the yoga guru for Pura Vida Adventures for over a decade. Born in Brazil, this globetrotting goddess fell in love with yoga at a very young age, becoming a devout practitioner of Hatha and Bhakti yoga at only 18. She studied full time at the Swasthya Yoga School in Brazil and attended a variety of workshops there that deepened her passion for yoga. Now with decades of experience, Cris has taught, practiced, and studied yoga all over the world (from Chile to India to England to Guatemala). But it is the beauty and peace of Costa Rica that makes her call Santa Teresa home.
The camp will take place in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and a perfect place for solo travelers to meet like-minded people, seek adventure, and explore an entirely different culture. In fact, about 30 percent of students of Pura Vida Adventures come to their surf and yoga retreats as solo travelers. The area of beach stretching from Playa Hermosa to Santa Teresa to Malpais is one of the most diverse surfing coasts in Costa Rica and it is right in their front yard.
With around five different types of surf breaks in the area, including point, reef, and beach breaks, you will find a wide range of surf spots that cater to beginners, intermediate, and advanced-level surfers. Pura Vida Adventures is located in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica at the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula and specifically at the beach of Playa Carmen. This area is known as a surfer’s paradise, because of the variety of surf breaks and consistent waves any time of the year.
It is also known for its beauty and Forbes Magazine dubbed Playa Santa Teresa one of the world’s 10 most breathtaking beaches in the world. Here is a breakdown of the different surf breaks in and around Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. It also provides a guide to the surfing level, the best tides to surf, and the best swell direction.
When the strong steeply angled South and SouthWest swells reach more than six feet and begin to fill in the eastward side of the peninsula, you load up your surf van for a full day excursion. Cabuya, also known as Lajas, is an easy, rolling right point break that forms over a smooth stone bottom peeling for about 150 yards, making it one of the longest waves in the area. You surf this break on an incoming tide from medium to high tide and waves tend to be several feet smaller than the beach breaks on the west side.
A deep channel makes for an easy paddle out and safety zone where you can relax and take in the gorgeous green coastline looking toward the National Park of Cabo Blanco. Guests of Pura Vida Adventures that have been lucky enough to score this break often say it is the highlight of their trip.
A few curving sandy coves to the south of Playa Carmen in Malpais is the locally famous left-hand point break Mar Azul, where you often spot sea turtles in the lineup. Mushy long lefts peel away from a flat reef bottom toward a deep channel. This spot needs at least a four to five-foot swell coming from the South or SouthWest combined with a rising high tide which tends to produce waves a couple of feet smaller than the beaches.
This beach is located when you first roll into Santa Teresa at the cruz (crossroads) at the intersection of Santa Teresa and Malpais. Playa Carmen is a gently sloped sand bottom break that stretches for about a mile with multiple peaks that produce long, fun, peeling rights and lefts. At the northern end of the beach, you can see a series of right and left peaks breaking over a slightly steeper sand bottom.
The remote splendor of Playa Hermosa strikes a chord in the hearts of surfers searching for a spectacular beach with jungle views. A short 20-minute drive from Playa Carmen, you arrive to find a sparkling white sand beach delivering a combination of rights and lefts. When the swell is big, the point break at the northern end of the beach starts to work.
About a 10-minute drive to the north of Playa Carmen, Santa Teresa’s sandy ocean bottom has a steeper incline that produces more powerful right and left breaking waves providing a more challenging ride. If you want to get barreled, this is the beach to go to.
There are three healthy, gourmet meals each day and unlimited filtered water included in the price. Pura Vida Adventures served custom cuisine for any dietary restriction including vegetarian, vegan, gluten, lactose, and so on. There will be an epic New Year party with dinner, dancing, and more waiting for you on the last night of the year 2020. Most meals will be served at the beachfront restaurant and several at the best restaurants in the town.
Explore the Costa Rican countryside, other villages, and the breathtaking beaches in the area. An exhilarating adventure that will make you fall in love with Costa Rica.
Fall in love with the peaceful nature and animal life that has made Costa Rica a dream destination. Take a guided or unguided hike through the country’s first nature reserve, Cabo Blanco.
Gallop on horseback along the shore at sunset and visit other gorgeous beaches with expert local guides.
Fly through the forest canopy over creeks and canyons with amazing vistas and panoramic views of the jungle and the Pacific Ocean below.
You will definitely want to take advantage of the peace and tranquility of your all-inclusive surf and yoga retreat in Costa Rica. The beachfront lounge area is a great place to dive into your new book, recap your morning’s surf experience, or just drift away into a midday siesta. Why not float in the oceanfront pool while soaking up the sun, or take a walk down the sandy beaches on some of the most breathtaking coastlines in Costa Rica? At sunset, witness the daiquiri-orange sun melting into the horizon while lounging in seaside tide pools, or swing blissfully in a hammock with a Mai Tai or mocktail in hand.

Juan Santamaría International Airport
Transfer not provided
Please book your flight to arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). Pura Vida Adventures recommends that you allow two hours between your international and domestic flights on both ends of your trip for customs, baggage claim, and ticketing. From the airport, there are two ways of getting to or from Santa Teresa: a domestic flight or a shuttle bus.
If you are looking to squeeze every ounce of vacation time in, they recommend booking a 30-minute puddle jumper flight on Sansa airlines (60 to 140 USD each way), leaving from the airport, and arriving in Tambor. Both Sansa and Green Airways depart right next door to the airport in the domestic terminal. These flights are part of the adventure and will start your trip off right with a beautiful flight over the Costa Rican jungle to the Nicoya Peninsula.
They have partnered with Montezuma Expeditions to provide you with shuttle bus services to or from Santa Teresa. The shuttle bus leaves San Jose and Santa Teresa daily and will pick you up at the airport or your hotel. The price is 50 USD per person each way. The shuttle ride is an approximate six hours drive through Costa Rica’s picturesque countryside, including a 90-minute ferry ride on the Golfo de Nicoya.
Once in Tambor, expect a one-hour taxi ride. Taxis cost approximately 60 USD each way for one to four people and 15 USD for each additional person. They will schedule a taxi to pick you up in Tambor, so look for a sign with your party’s name or the Pura Vida Adventures sign. There are a limited number of flights and seats to Tambor, so make your reservation early.
