Justin started surfing competitively at a young age and dominated the junior ranks and earned his Springbok colors to surf the world games in Bali and Brazil. He then went onto the world pro series, surfing and traveling throughout South African and Europe reaching the top 200 on the world rankings. Justin has always been on hand for coaching and guidance to help nurture the young up and coming provincial surfers to follow their dreams highlighted by two members of the local rural Umzumbe surf club qualified for their national colors through the national development program. Justin is very passionate about coaching and sharing the art of wave riding. Since 2010, his surf school has been very successful with loads of stoked students coming back for more and continuing with their new way of life.
This surf camp will take place in Pumula, South Africa. The place has a pack of friendly, super cute dogs, and a few cats. It is surrounded by nature and you can spot the beautiful large bushbuck and her family, hear the porcupines at night, enjoy the super cute natural vervet monkeys and tons of birdlife, as well as see the fish eagle soar and hear them call across the valley. Their large sub-tropical garden borders on the most sensational Mangrove forest which they have direct access to.
It is a super magical place. Just a short 5-minute walk away from the camp, there is Pumula Beach where the Injambili River meanders down to a rocky point on which since 1935 rests the remains of the shipwrecked Nivonia looking north towards the warm golden sun - a long white beach stretches between the lush green dune forest and clear blue sea. The coastline of the surf camp is full of small rocky bays, estuaries, and long sandy beaches which are excellent for surfing, snorkeling, fishing, and diving. Most local beaches are protected by lifeguards and shark nets.
There are seven surf spots within a ten-minute drive from the camp with a good variety of waves that work in different conditions from point breaks to shallow sandbars, stretching out up to 150 meters from the shore break to the backline with the average summers swell the size of two to four-foot and four to six-foot in winter.
Surf camp menu consists of fresh healthy nutritious meals. Five breakfasts will be served with seasonal fruit smoothies, muesli, and yogurts, fresh eggs, and croissant which are included in the package. Pumula Surf Camp also serves lunch and dinner for an additional fee. Dinners can be booked on site for 130 ZAR per person. For vegan and gluten free meals, please add 40 ZAR per person per meal.
Lunch is usually light with fresh greens from the garden, homemade bread, and fresh ocean fish (if available). Dinner varies daily and usually consists of fresh greens, grains, salads, and a good quality meat option. The examples are traditional African foods, fresh seafood platters, and a traditional South African meal of a braai veils (flame grilled barbeque). All diets are catered for so please advise upon booking.
Pumula Surf Camp has become very well-known for all yummy meals that come out of the kitchen whether you are vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian, or meat eater, they cater for all diets. Cooking is one of Hayley’s passions and she makes sure that everyone is fed good healthy homecooked meals. We often like to sit around the fire and “Braai” (barbecue). The fish braais are simply delicious freshly caught fish, fresh organic vegetarian, and salads. Other meals include traditional South Africa fare such a boerewors (South African sausage) and potjies (South African stews) cooked in a traditional African pot over the fire. Pumula Surf Camp also does gluten-free and many other diets.
