Portugals North-West coast has a consistent swell all year round. This in combination with many uncrowded and untouched spots makes this the perfect place to surf! The beach breaks are ideal for beginners to learn how to surf. And because of the many uncrowded beaches you really get to focus on the surf. Along a 15 km coastline there are more than 20 clean beach breaks with waves for all levels.
The most famous and consistent wave is Espinho, also host of several surf events! It is known for its long and barreling right-hander. For intermediate surfers the best wave is Cagalhotos, a long and easy right, perfect for you to develop your surf manoeuvres. In front of the camp there is a fast and fun left-hander. South of the camp you will find the multiple peaks of the natural beaches located in Maceda Natural Park, where the surf is in complete harmony with nature in its purest form.
Originally from the Netherlands, Katrijn graduated as a film director and scriptwriter in Amsterdam. One holiday though, she started surfing and decided that she never wanted to stop anymore. She kept dreaming of living next to the beach so that she could surf everyday, and fortunately that dream came true. After she got her surf instructor and lifeguard certificate, she continued to teach, but nowadays she mostly helps out Pedro with the organization of Oporto Surf Camp.
Pedro started surfing about 30 years ago in the North of Portugal with one of his best friends Abilio Pinto (Billy surfboards). His parents always took them on holiday to Peniche where he saw people surfing for the first time and got very curious. It’s now 8 years ago that Pedro started Oporto Surf Camp. After working many years as a surf teacher and helping organizing surf championships in Portugal, he wanted to show and share the great uncrowded waves in the North of Portugal with others.
Sandro grew up in Esmoriz. He started as a body boarder, tried skim boarding and only picked up surfing in the last ten years. He got to know Pedro and Katrijn through a common friend who was working at that time at Oporto Surfcamp. Their friendship grew along the time they spent surfing together. It was then that Sandro really started to improve his surfing. After taking his ASI surf instructors and lifesaving course, he has since joined Oporto Surf Camp, now already for 5 years.
Beside studying as a sport instructor in Poland, Victoria also took the ASI surf instructors & lifesaving course. She really likes to teach surfing and she is proud to be one of the few Polish surf instructors. So before you meet her, you should know the meaning of “na zdrowie”. Each person is different and Victoria likes to find the most effective way to teach her students to surf so that they can get the most out of their surf holiday.
Originally from Italy, Alessandro was very used to snowboarding. He started to surf 2 years ago at Oporto Surfcamp with some friends, when they booked a holiday, but after 10 days, decided that he didn’t want to go back home. When we booked another holiday at Oporto Surfcamp, he decided to ask Katrijn if she needed someone to help out for the season, and he has been an active member ever since.
