Summer offers gentle beginner waves, in autumn, winter, and spring the big swells reach the coast.
In the beginner courses, you will learn the basics of surfing. The surf school has developed a perfect program for beginners, based on many years of teaching experience. The surf course consists of practical and theoretical parts and the groups are kept small with a maximum of 5 people per coach. The experienced and certified surf coaches are always in the water with you.
Intermediate surfers are analyzed individually by the surf instructors in order to improve their performance and to make further progress. Among other things: Perfect positioning in the lineup, improvement of timing and paddle technology, wave reading, generating speed, bottom turn, and other maneuvers.
Experienced surfers can improve their skills and work on their bottom turns and maneuvers.
Classes are usually held in the morning and in the afternoon (depending on the tide, wave and wind conditions). A maximum of 5 surfers per coach and a variety of beaches for the different surf levels.
The surf course includes all the equipment needed, surfboards for all levels (softboards and epoxy boards) and wetsuits (4/3) in all sizes, children included.
It sounds very cliché but surfing has changed her life. Katrijn is from the Netherlands and she graduated as a film director and scriptwriter in Amsterdam. But after learning to surf on a holiday there in the north, she never wanted to stop anymore. Katrijn kept dreaming of a life next to the beach. And fortunately, that dream came true. It’s now already 12 years ago that this surf holiday changed her life. She could not imagine doing this only once a year on holiday. So be careful when you come here on holiday. She kept on surfing and got her surf instructor and lifeguard certificate.
Pedro started surfing about 30 years ago in the North of Portugal. His parents always took him and his brother on holiday to Peniche where he saw people surfing for the first time and he got very curious. It’s now 9 years ago that he started Oporto Surf Camp. After working many years as a surf teacher and helping organizing surf championships in Portugal, he wanted to show and share the great uncrowded waves in the North of Portugal with others. When you give surf lessons it’s great to see the happiness of the guests when they catch their first waves.
Sandro grew up in Esmoriz and started as a bodyboarder, tried to skim boarding and started surfing in the last ten years. He got to know Pedro and Katrijn through a common friend who was working at that time at Oporto Surfcamp. Their friendship grew along the time they spent surfing together. It was then that he really started to improve his surfing. He studied graphic design and photography and helped out with this at the surf camp. He also liked to help out Pedro and Katrijn at the beach, in the lessons, giving company to the guests and showing them Esmoriz.
Alessandro is from Italy, nearby Torino in the north. So he's very used to snowboarding. He started to surf five years ago at Oporto Surfcamp with some friends. He booked their holiday to have fun but after 10 days, he didn’t want to go back home. It was such a wonderful experience that he wanted to come back on the surfboard as soon as possible, but with his job in Italy, surfing was not really possible. When he booked another holiday at Oporto Surfcamp, he decided to ask Katrijn if she needed someone to help out for the season.
Pedro was born in Figueira da Foz but has lived all along Portugal’s coastline. He started surfing when he was around 13 years old. He saw people surfing in Lisbon and wanted that too. Pedro started competing when he was 17 years old. He became second at the regional competition and kept on competing and got sponsors. He was second at the national circuit of Portugal. He was lucky to start with the generation that put surf competitions on the map. Everyone that started competing at that time is still very involved in surfing, all surf like crazy, work for surf brands, or became coaches.
Oporto Surf Camp is located in a picturesque and traditional fisherman’s village, Praia de Esmoriz. Everything you need for your holiday is within walking distance. (ATM, pharmacy, some shops, supermarket). The marvelous bakeries, famous around our returning guests, restaurants to try out every night something different like traditional Portuguese plates, Brazilian rodizio, Italian food, tapas, fresh fish dishes or the famous takeaway chicken ‘Frango Piri Piri’. And of course, some nice bars to enjoy a Super Bock beer.
Close to the surf house, there are plenty of restaurants serving typical Portuguese dishes (such as great seafood), bakeries where you want to pass by every day and traditional grocery shops with typical products from the region.
Besides surfing, Oporto Surfcamp also offers lot’s of other stuff to do. For example, a wake surf experience at the Douro River, a SUP tour in the Ria, or yoga lessons. But also relaxing massage for all your (surf) muscles. There are bicycles for rent imported from Holland, Oporto offers you a nice mix of a beach cruiser and a decent bike. You can now bike between Gaia (south Porto) and Furadouro on beautiful wooden cycling paths.
