Over the months of June, July, and August, the north Male Atoll's surf breaks are getting busier due to the European summer holidays. Many nationalities of surfers flock to the Maldives over this period. The surf at this time is very consistent and can accommodate a large number of surfers spread out over the seven breaks in the atoll.
If you are after less crowded conditions, the months of March, April, May, September, and October are recommended. The swell over this period may not be as consistent as in June and August, however good waves certainly still exist at this time.
April to September is considered as winter with a maximum of swell in the Indian ocean. The transition period, from March, April, October, and November might be the best months, with an advantage in spring, for a clean session with lots of sun, but with a frequency and size less than the southwest May to September monsoon. The heart of the southwest monsoon is June to July with frequent rain, but short and moderate winds. It is less hot and this is the period where the navigation is the most difficult.
With the three different swell directions, from west, southwest, and southeast in the central Atoll, it is a period where the waves are guaranteed, except during heavy storms, that are very rare. There are fewer boats around during the southwest monsoon, and that could be a good time for south Male and Meemu Atoll.
It is very unlikely that you will not surf for a couple of hours a day. If a surf spot does not have good conditions, your surf guide will give you some suggestions. Ocean Divine is a fast boat that could change spots rapidly. If the surf is impossible, you can also join a course to learn how to dive, snorkel, or fish. If you are a keen fisherman, bring you own gear. Ocean Divine has some basic gear on board. Also, it can be a good time to learn how to hold your breath underwater with David's unique program.
After clearing customs and immigration, you will be met by a representative of Ocean Divine and transferred from the airport to the boat. The tour commences at 10 p.m, outside the arrivals hall at Male International Airport (MLE). Please ensure you are there to meet the boat representative at this time. You are recommended to take the courtesy bus, located outside the arrivals hall, to the Hulule Airport hotel to relax and have dinner, before going back to the airport to meet other passengers. The hotel will charge approximately 65 USD per person for use of the pool, luggage storage, and use of showers.
Ocean Divine can transfer you to and from the surf breaks, at any time between 06:00 a.m and 6:00 p.m each day, with the boat within close proximity to the chosen surf breaks. You will decide when you would like to surf and they will promptly deliver you to some of the best surf breaks in the world. There are daily dive sessions for beginners or experienced divers alike. You can also feel free to take part in snorkeling or fishing, or maybe visit a local island during the day.
Your crew can wake you up on request, anytime from 5:30 a.m, where you will be greeted on the back deck with tea, coffee, juice, fresh fruit, and a range of cereal to prepare you for your day. The tender departs at 6:00 a.m for the first surf session of the day, with a freshly cooked breakfast, served from 9:00 a.m. After breakfast, you can head to surfing again, returning at any time, with a fresh lunch served at 1:00 p.m.
Feel free to take in an afternoon surf or try a dive, fish, or snorkel in the beautiful waters of the Maldives. You must be back on board by 6:00 p.m and you will be greeted with some ice cold beers aboard the tender for their afternoon return.
At night, enjoy the company of your fellow friends around the dinner table, watch a movie in your cabin or in the living room, play some games, chill out on the front or upper deck under the stars, or simply head off to your comfortable bed for a wonderful nights sleep. The choice for the evening activities is all yours.
You will search for the best waves of the day, starting with Cokes and Chickens. You will enjoy surfing, diving, fishing, and lazing in the sun, basically whatever you would like to do all day long.
You will head south for three hours to Lucky Joes and Rip Tide, wet a line, and catch some fish as you cruise along. You will visit a local island to take in the Maldivian culture. You will learn how to dive and get your PADI ticket.
You will enjoy the uncrowded surfing, diving, and fishing and you will be invited to join your hosts and other guests on the front deck for a sunset cocktail set to relaxing music. A great way to end another great day.
Early departure and cruise back north to Cokes and Chickens. You will have the chance to surf all day or dive with manta rays once again. You will have an afternoon session of learning how to hold your breath, but also learn how to relax under water, before your free diving instructor David Mesnard. At night, you will enjoy a sunset party on the deck.
You will have an early surf report that will determine where you will move, to take advantage of the best surf conditions. Then, you will be heading to Sultans and Jails for an all day surfing. You will enjoy a sunset diorama on their giant screen on the front deck, featuring photos and videos of your memorable week aboard, but only if the weather will permit.
You will surf all morning until midday. You will enjoy a beautiful thank you and goodbye lunch before departing to the airport for your return flight. You will leave Male at 11:00 a.m. and be transferred to Hulhule Hotel at the Male International Airport (MLE) at 1:30 p.m, to relax by the pool, have a few drinks, snacks, or a shower before checking-in your flight later. The hotel will charge approximately 50 USD per person for luggage storage and use of the pool, and approximately 85 USD for meal included. This is payable directly.
For the period of your retreat, you will be leaving Male, Republic of Maldives and go through some of the famous surfing beaches. Jailbreaks is a classic right-hander that was previously off limits. Along down the line, a right-hander with three distinct sections including a mid barrel section. Rides of up to 300 meters can be had when it is lining up.
Honkies is located near HP reef just north of Himmafushi Island. It is a fast wrapping left, at four to six feet and needs the right swell direction. Worth checking if Sultans is crowded.
Sultans is an easy right-hand take-off, which leads you to an intense wrapping section at the end. Breaks three to eight feet, this wave is the most protected from the southerly winds in the north Male atoll and collects the most swell, so please go there if it is small.
Twenty minutes further north, you will find the right-hander known as Ninjas which breaks off Kani resort. A mellower right-hander which can be quite fickle. Directly opposite from Kani resort, you have Lohis, a long walkable left-hander that breaks off Lohifushi resort, a very consistent wave and has hosted the WQS O'Neil Deep Blue open for the past three years.
Twenty-five minutes north of Lohifushi is two breaks opposite from each other at a reef pass. The right-hander known as Cokes, that breaks three to 10 feet and is fairly protected from the southerly winds, may affect other breaks such as Lohis. This wave has been well photographed and is the hollowest in the north Male atoll. This will test your tube-riding ability.
The left-hander known as Chickens is probably the fastest wave in the north Male atoll. This wave holds swell size from three feet to well over 10 feet and provides rides up to 500 meters long.
You will enjoy daily breakfast, including omelets and eggs, cooked to your liking, sausages, and a range of traditional cooked Maldivian dishes including Massouni. Plus you will have cakes, juice, tea, coffee, and fresh fruit available. Lunches will include local fresh fish, sashimi, and a variety of other fresh prepared meals and desserts. Snacks and juices are waiting on the back deck when you return.
Each afternoon you will have the possibility to enjoy ice cold beers or a range of freshly prepared cocktails on the front deck while taking in the stunning sunsets set to your favorite tunes. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m, with each menu changing every evening. The executive chef Dasenta and his assistant chef Mahesh will offer you explanation of the meals they have prepared for you. If you have any special dietary requests, please let Ocean Divine know.
Please book your flight to arrive at Male International Airport (MLE). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Ocean Divine will pick you up from the airport.
