Titans of Mavericks, the popular wave surfing competition, is canceled! The event was supposed to take place at the beginning of the year, but event organizers have filed for bankruptcy on February 3.
Not too long ago, we announced one of the biggest news on the big wave surfing scene – women were finally allowed to compete in the biggest big wave surfing competition in the world, the Titans of Mavericks.
The spirits were high, everyone was excited about the announcement and the waves were predicted to be some of the biggest in the competition’s history, but alas, it was announced that the Titans of Mavericks will not take place in 2017.
The event’s organizers, Cartel Management LLC and Titans of Mavericks Inc., filed for bankruptcy and they’re also being sued for breach of contract by Red Bull Media House. It was reported that the competitors were only given about 72 hours’ notice, which upset quite a lot of people, considering the event’s global importance.
But can the event still take place, even though the organizers have filed for Chapter 11? Although there is a possibility, chances are slim. According to the press release:
“The Chapter 11 filings by Titans of Mavericks and Cartel Management represent the culmination of a strategy designed to implement a sale of the assets and intellectual property of the companies to afford a buyer certain protections available only in bankruptcy. Titans of Mavericks intends for such a sale to ensure a smooth and swift transition of the business and operations. "The brand has seen explosive growth since its creation," said Griffin Guess, Titans of Mavericks founder.”
So, if the sale of the assets and intellectual property goes according to plan, we could see the event take place this year, as early as March. It’s not the first time the Titans of Mavericks changed owners, but the idea that it could still be held this year, in only a couple months’ time is quite farfetched. Brian Overfelt, an invitational member of the event said that “The event is totally done this year. It’s impossible. There’s no way this event will happen. We were completely and totally blindsided.”
Fans of big wave surfing and of the Mavericks competitions are furious. Many believe that commercialism has ripped the heart out of the big wave surfing competition, killing it, while others are more positive, saying that if a big wave comes, people will keep surfing it, whether or not for a competition.
Still, the world of surfing could use a few more competitions, and we hope this isn’t the last time we hear of Titans of Mavericks.
