Of course, when you go to university, it’s all about working hard, getting your qualifications, grades and degrees and setting yourself up with the certificates and knowledge you’ll need later in life. However, going to university doesn’t have to be all work and no play!
If you’re into surfing and looking for the best university to suit you for the next couple of years, stop what you’re doing and read this. There are many awesome surf spots in Europe that are also renowned for their excellent universities. Even if this means moving away from home, isn’t that what you were going to do anyway?
1. Plymouth University
Okay, if you’re reading this in the UK, then you don’t have to move that far away to get a great placement and catch some of the best waves in the UK. Plymouth is the fifth biggest university in the UK and even has a Surf Science & Technology course available for students!
2. Universidade De Lisboa
Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon is world-famous for its awesome waves and buzzling city life and is a great place to go to university for some sun, sea and amazing, unforgettable memories. The university here is actually relatively young and only a few years old, having been made up of over 18 colleges.
Flying back over to the UK now and Cornwall in particular where you’ll find some of the best waves in all of the UK, making it one of the most iconic places to surf and study. The university here has two campuses you may need to travel between, and some of the most beautiful beaches in all of the isles.

One of the largest universities in France, Bordeaux University is divided into four separate departments, including Science & Technology, Maths and the sorts, and is home to nearly 100,000 students. Bordeaux itself is such an amazing city, and the excellent surfing in France simply make it perfect.

Located on the visually stunning island of Tenerife, why not pop down and relocate to the Canary Islands for a university experience in paradise? It is home to the best surfing in of Spain, and the fact that it has its own university only makes this even sweeter.
Universidad de la Laguna is made up of four campuses and has a full range of courses available, ensuring you’ll find one that you like.
6. Université des Antilles
At this university, you’ll find pretty much all the most common subjects and courses that you’d expect a university to offer, all housed within the beautiful islands of the French West Indies.
“Some of the highlighted courses here include Sport and Medicine. Geographically, it’s located in the Caribbean, but is officially part of France and therefore Europe” – explains Carola Perry, an Academic Adviser at Big Assignments.
7. Université de Nantes
Université de Nantes is renowned for being the second largest university in all of France and is home to over 32,000 students. However, the university itself is actually spread over three different and geographically unique cities and accepts over 3,500 foreign students a year.

Located in the Bilbao region of Spain, the surfing opportunities you’ll find here are unbelievable and easily some of the best in all of Europe. Chuck in the fact there’s a complete university experience to be had and you’ve got a very happy student.

9. UMASS in Lisbon

Yet another Lisbon university to enter our list, but for all the right reasons. Lisbon is easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and the coast is renowned for experiencing winds in all directions, meaning the surfing opportunities are incredible.
“You’ll also find a to-die-for nightlife scene, amazing cuisine and restaurants, is affordable to live in and you’re sure to have a great time” – shares Jill Cortez, an Educator at Australian Help.
10. Swansea University

The UK is actually surprisingly famous for its many great surfing locations, and Swansea is one of them. Although Swansea is geographically the closest university in the world to a beach, this isn’t the beach where you’ll find the surfing waves, but it’s still a great place to relax and study!

11. University of Exeter

Another surprise university to conclude our list, the University of Exeter is commonly found in the top-ten lists of best universities in the UK and for a good reason.
The total student population equals around 20,000. Located in the beautiful Devon countryside, the university secures its place as one of the most picturesque universities in Europe, with great coastal access to some of the best surfing opportunities in the country.
