You'll be staying at the beautiful Jungles Edge Resort in Nosara, Costa Rica where you'll get to enjoy the lush jungles, pristine beaches, and extravagant wildlife on a daily basis.

Besides the Muay Thai training, you'll also have group outing which will include surf lessons, waterfall hikes, beach bonfires, yoga sessions, and more. Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking, along with various clinching techniques. This physical and mental discipline which includes combat on shins is known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins, being associated with a good physical preparation that makes a full-contact fighter very efficient. Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the twentieth century, when practitioners defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts.

Muay Thai can be traced back to the 16th century, developed from the fighting style of the famous fighter Nai Khanomtom. Its ancestor is Muay Boran (or ancient boxing), which in the 1930s was formalized with rules and equipment influenced by Western boxing.

Course preparation

You do not need to speak Spanish. Although knowing Spanish would obviously help, its not a necessity. Most Costa Ricans speak a little bit of English, and the workers around Jungles Edge have very good English speaking skills.

Although experience in Muay Thai prior to coming to this retreat is good to have, it is not required. Ideally you should have some experience in training Muay Thai, whether it be taking a couple classes or practicing by yourself at home. However, these retreats are open to anyone who is passionate about learning Muay Thai and is willing to put in some quality sessions during their stay. Skill levels generally range from complete beginners to amateur fighters and everything in between.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is Central America's jewel. It's an oasis of calm among its turbulent neighbors and an ecotourism heaven, making it one of the best places to experience the tropics with minimal impact. It's also mostly coastline, which means great surfing, beaches galore, and a climate built for laziness.

Costa Rica's enlightened approach to conservation has ensured that lush jungles are home to playful monkeys, languid sloths, crocodiles, countless lizards, poison-dart frogs, and a mind-boggling assortment of exotic birds, insects and butterflies. Meanwhile, endangered sea turtles nest on both coasts and cloud forests protect elusive birds and jungle cats.

Thrill seekers can fly through forests on zip lines, peer into boiling volcanoes, surf oversized waves and dive with dolphins and whales - all in the course of a normal day. Then again, if you have some serious chilling to do, you can always lounge in a hammock and enjoy the pure life, or pura vida - a national expression that sums up the desire to live the best, most hassle-free existence.

Nosara is a village and district in the Nicoya canton, Guanacaste province of Costa Rica on the Pacific Coast. For decades local associations have kept the beaches clean and the surrounding protected national parks and forest relatively undeveloped. It has the cleanest water table in all of Costa Rica, with clean ocean water and no dumping of gray or black water into the streams or beaches. It is one of the few coastal towns that lacks nearly any development on the beach.

This unique combination of North American culture and pristine Costa Rican wilderness attracts all kinds including the rich and famous. Woody Harrelson, Liv Schreiber, and several wealthy individuals have either lived here or visited in recent years. High demand has led real estate to soar but people continue to move and to buy. The quality of life here is so high, many choose to relocate regardless of the cost.

That day is specifically reserved for retreaters to explore other culinary opportunities of Costa Rica.

The chefs serve organic, healthy foods that are grown in their very own gardens or from nearby farmers. Needless to say, the food is absolutely amazing not only because it tastes delicious, but because it's extremely nutritious too.

"I was a bit nervous going to Costa Rica on a Muay Thai retreat. New country, new people, and traveling alone left me not knowing what to expect. But as soon as I landed and met Sean, Liz, and Wes, I knew that it was going to be amazing! We trained twice a day, every day, and every session we learned something new and got in great shape while doing it. Sean is an amazing teacher with a lot of knowledge and love for Muay Thai. After each session, I felt a better sense of what my weaknesses are and what my strengths are. Training with Sean in Costa Rica gave me what I needed to re-motivate myself and be the best that I can be inside the ring and outside. I will definitely be attending more of his retreats!I feel very fortunate to have had this experience and will definitely implement what I learned into my training and into my style of fighting. I cant thank Sean enough!"

"I recently attended a Muay Thai retreat with Sean Fagan, aka the Muay Thai Guy in Costa Rica and enjoyed every minute of it! At first I was thinking to go to Thailand but I figured Costa Rica is closer to home, less expensive, no jet lag, and no time adjusting. The resort we stayed and trained at was beautiful and I figured Ill learn from Seans experiences cause hes been to Thailand many times. And Im glad I did!I met some amazing people that I now call friends. We all share the love and passion for the sport of Muay Thai. I met people from different training background and fighting style. Training was twice a day with a rest or activity in between, food was organic and healthy, weather was sunny and warm, and the most beautiful beaches Ive ever seen were within 5 minutes walk!Ive been doing martial arts for the last 20 years of my life and I thought I know it all, until I trained with Sean. I learned some new techniques that Ive never tried before and worked on improving my existing skills, all in a fun and friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend a Muay Thai retreat, an awesome experience that you will be telling your family and friends about with pride and will never forget!"

"I spent one week on Seans first Muay Thai Retreat at Jungles Edge in beautiful Nosara, Costa Rica, and it couldnt have been better. Ive already written up a 5-star review on Trip Advisor for Jungles Edge, so Ill focus on the actual retreat here. From the moment I met Sean, he was extremely friendly, down-to-earth, and just as excited as us to get training. He was a consummate professional, very knowledgeable, and patient. We all came from different martial arts backgrounds and experiences, but Sean was able to adapt and teach us appropriately. He focused not only on our strengths, but weaknesses, andI can safely say that I left as a better Muay Thai enthusiast.Furthermore, Sean introduced us to several Dutch style combinations not routinely practiced at my gym, and some excellent defensive counters to keep opponents guessing. Sean has a no nonsense approach to his teaching. Its effective, its both offensive and defensive, and its rooted in his experience as an amateur and professional fighter. I would absolutely recommend his retreats, and I look forward to attending his next one in Costa Rica in 2016."

"I didnt know what to expect, going to a new country, training with some unfamiliar faces and stepping out of my comfort zone, but attending Sean Fagans Muay Thai retreat in Costa Rica in March of 2015 was one of the best choices I made.I was surprised right off the bat how down to earth and friendly Sean was. I have had a lot of good luck with generally only dealing with positive people in the muay Thai community but you never know meeting somebody you have only followed online. Not only was he friendly to myself and the other members of our group but he was open to our input as far as what we wanted to train and do outside of training. Its always challenging making everyone happy especially a group that was pretty mixed as ours. He was patient with us, which is one of the hardest parts of training or teaching other. Some people dont have that quality and it makes them poor teachers Sean definitely is not lacking in this.As far as the resort and country went, it was awesome. It was really the experience of a lifetime amazing food, beautiful beaches, super friendly locals and tropical weather. The hosts were extremely accomodating and friendly, I would go there again in a heart beat. One of the coolest parts about the whole experience was meeting new people from different parts of the world that came together over a common bond like muay Thai, it really shows the positivity this sport can bring into your life. I gained some great experience from Sean and would train under him again anytime. The first day back to my normal gym people were amazed how much I was showing improvement, just from one week of focused work with Sean."
