Departing Male Harbour in the Maldives, you will find the island nations most famous waves in the North Male Atolls. The long breaks offer right and lefts for the beginner to the intermediate surfer to the professional with waves ranging from 1 - 3 meters. In general, SUP surfers may prefer the South Male Atolls depending on the size of the swell. A surf charter should be flexible, not locked into strict daily miles and locations.
Rather, it should be based on mother natures plans for the swell and wind. Because of this, you will not finalize the charter itinerary with the captain and crew until closer to departure. With a generous mileage allowance, you have the luxury to travel further than any standard charter to get away from the crowds and into the best waves. Rest assured, you will get what you are looking for with a boat and experienced crew that know the area very well.
During the last decade, surfing in the Maldives has attracted many surfers from all over the world. The same swells hitting Indonesia and deliver the goods to the Maldives except that the latitude is a little higher and the Southeast exposure has less energy. Your Captain, on board surf guide, Moon Tours host, and Pauly will get you on the best waves in the area depending on the weather conditions. The flat water stand-up paddleboarding is equally exquisite in the lagoons, around the islands, and inside the atolls.
Surfers, non-surfers, family, and friends are all welcome on this surf charter. If you are a non-surfer, you will love cruising the Maldives onboard Carpe Diem with plenty of opportunities to relax, wine and dine, swim, snorkel, dive, or fish. Children upon request depend on group demographic, grandparents, the whole family, or a group of friends.
Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the gem-like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, crystal clear warm water, and stunning coral reefs with abundant varieties of marine life host a massive variety of world-class waves that are now accessible to the traveling surfer.
There are over 1,192 islands in the Maldives Republic, measuring 820 kilometers north to south and 120 kilometers east to west. The closest neighbors are India and Sri Lanka. People who have never been to the Maldives often have trouble comprehending that there is almost no land. It is the sea with little pockets of coral dotted on top of an old volcanic mountain range.
Only 202 of the islands are inhabited; there are no hills or rivers, almost no tides. The highest point above sea level is less than 10 feet. Waves on this charter are carefully selected based on the Moon Tours group criteria of suitable SUP waves and the privacy of empty lineups wherever possible.
It is no secret the Maldives have built a reputation as one of the best places to surf on the planet. It’s lush green rainforests meet white sandy shores with lapping crystal clear blue water over reefs abundant with sea life and world-class waves crashing overhead. There are three main surfing areas:
The most famous breaks are in North Male Atolls. These long point breaks offer rights and lefts, whether for low intermediates, intermediates, or for professional surfers, with waves ranging from one to meters. For beginners, South Male Atoll is better suited
Surf spots can be accessed a number of ways; by surf charter boat, point breaks straight off the resort, or by Dhoni transferring surfers from the resorts and camps. Not all surf breaks are accessible from land.
A lot of surfers prefer surf charter boats to access the many different points in the North and South Male Atolls. On a boat there are no constraints and surfers can choose among the most famous breaks. But try to ensure you surf Cokes, Jailbreaks (Himmafushi), Honky’s, Sultans, and Tucky Joes! They are amazing waves!
All meals, snacks, filtered water, tea, and coffee are included. After a short leave of absence, the Sri Lankan chef cook, Iresh, is back on the Carpe Diem. He is a well-experienced chef and knows how to make those buffets special, extra tasty, and high standard. He is assisted by a local chef, Rakeeb, to add some local flavor to the menu.
Both of them have been working on the Diem for many years. The menu covers a wide range of different international cuisines blended together for you to enjoy. With prior notice, special dietary requests can be catered for as well as any special occasion packages like birthday celebrations and anniversaries to name a few.
Although the Maldives are known for the stunning beaches and azure waters that typify the tropical idyll, there's life beneath the water’s surface which is becoming ever more respected by scuba divers. The Maldives islands have some good coral reefs, but it’s the abundance of marine life throughout the country that sets it apart from other dive destinations. The water temperatures remain 27 to 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
All of the vessels are accompanied by spacious diving dhonis (tenders) which are equipped with the latest to meet the ever-growing demands of the divers today. The dhonis have Nitrox membrane systems providing 32 percent, a toilet, hot water shower, fresh water showers, and camera rinsing tank. Snorkelers are welcome too. Apart from some dedicated snorkel trips, the boats all have a small speedboat (dingy) available for snorkelers to go snorkeling with the crew when the divers are out diving.
Diving fees / rental gear is not included. There is diving gear available to rent on this boat. Please provide your rental needs. You will need to pay for the rental gear on board of the boat.
There is plenty to offer non-surfing partners:
Please book your flight to arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE). Transfer from and to the airport is included. The organizer will pick you up from the airport.
If you are from Australia, you have a few options but if it’s surfboards and surf SUP that you want to bring, then Moon Tours recommends flying with Singapore Airlines to Male where you will meet Carpe Diem crew and chauffeured to the boat. If you are booking your own flights, make sure you check your airline guidelines and luggage allowance.
