This awesome 3-month surf instructor course focuses on building your experience and knowledge of surfing, the ocean, and instruction. Over the 3 months, you will develop the necessary skills required to pass all qualifications needed to become a licensed surf instructor. Besides the qualifications, you’ll also focus on your teaching techniques and surfing abilities to make you a well-rounded and employable instructor. To pass the licensed surfing instructor qualification, you need to have intermediate surfing skill level.

Spot X has a range of accommodation from dorm rooms, waterfront cabins, or tipis. Accommodation is in 4 -10 share dorms rooms in comfortable bunks. The academy house is self-contained with its own lounge and deck areas. Academy students always refer to the academy house as their home away from home.

Spot X has all the facilities including absolute beach front accommodation, WiFi, kiosk / shop, beach activities, powered and unpowered campsites, surf board hire, bike hire, volleyball, river kayaking tours, surf rafting, kangaroo golf (nearby), chill out zones, hammocks, fire pit, laundry, party room, camp kitchen, and TV room.


The 3-month surf development course facilitates the development of the following skills:

  • Practical development of beginner to intermediate surf skills
  • Ocean safety, ocean awareness, and fitness training
  • Access to a variety of waves
  • Expert instruction by qualified coaches to achieve catching, riding, and turning on unbroken waves
  • Increased surf theory, and exposure to more challenging waves
  • Increased ocean fitness, paddling power, and confidence
  • Provide up to 40 hours of practical coaching experience
  • Use of video analysis to improve surfing techniques


To become a Level 1 Surf Instructor you must attend all classes, demonstrate the required surf skills, be found competent in the qualifications, and pay an additional 1000 AUD additional payment for the statutory certification and accreditation.

Itinerary (subject to change)

Day 1 - Arrive at Spot X Surf Camp

  • Your surf course begins with a "6 Day 6 Night Great Aussie Surf Adventure" where you will head to Spot X Surf Camp (where you will spend the next 3 months) with comfortable transfers included from Sydney, Byron Bay, or Brisbane. Check in, explore the camp, enjoy your first dinner, socialise around the campfire, and meet your new mates.
  • After dinner, you might want to head around the fire, have a drink, socialise, and head to bed nice and early for another day of beachside fun or you might be ready to party. Whatever you’re in the mood for, Mojosurf Australia has got you covered.

Day 2- 90 - A typical week at Spot X

  • Begin the day with an early morning sunrise surf lesson with Mojo’s elite instructors. After working up an appetite grab breakfast, which is available from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m. and chill out on the deck overlooking the surf.
  • The rest of the morning is free for you to grab a surf board and perfect your surfing skills anytime you like, with unlimited surf board hire as part of your package, or you can just chill out on the beach before lunch. Lunch time is from 12pm to 1pm.
  • After lunch, you have 2 hours to yourself to go surfing, take a nap in the hammock, or hang out with your mates. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, you will have a theory lesson or fitness classes.
  • Dinner is served from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a nightly camp fire and night time activities.

Day 91 - Depart Spot X Surf Camp

  • After 91 days at Spot X Surf Camp, you became a surf legend and possibly an instructor. You can now catch your included transport back to Sydney, Byron Bay, or Brisbane.


Mondays - Surf fitness

  • Surf fitness includes either swimming training in the local pool or ocean based fitness where you will be taught to be safe and competent swimming in the ocean.

Tuesdays - Theory lesson

  • Participate in a surf theory lesson where you will be taught all things surfing, such as; ocean awareness, surf etiquette, and even surfboard repair.

Wednesdays - Bonus theory lesson and circuit training

  • Each Wednesday, the 3-month instructors have a bonus theory lesson where they are taught all the essential skills to become an awesome surf instructor. After which, the whole academy crew will take part in circuit training to strengthen the core muscle groups essential to surfing.

Thursdays - Time to chill

  • Thursday afternoon is time to chill with a relaxing yoga style surf flexibility session to relax your muscles after a hard weeks surfing and calm your mind with some chilled vibes.

Fridays - Video analysis

  • Fridays involve video analysis with a qualified instructor, arguable the best weapon in the coaching arsenal, to help improve your surfing and see exactly what you can work on.

Saturdays and Sundays - Up to you!

  • The weekends are all yours! You can chill out, surf, hang out with friends, or go visit some of the sights and scenes the local area has to offer.
  • Any day of the week, you can participate in one of the free camp activities such as kangaroo golf, ocean rafting, kayaking, volleyball, beach soccer, and slip and slide to name a few.


You will need to complete 7 days of hibernation at beginning of camp. You will be shown to your "hibernation" accommodation onsite separate from other accommodation and common areas in the camp. Hibernation period of 7 days is required upon your arrival. On day 8, you rejoin the pack and go about your days as normal.

This is required by the government and the medical and hygiene team. Hibernation means staying inside or just a metre outside the accommodation (tanning, yoga, working out, etc.). 3 meals will be delivered to your door each day and there will be three 30-minute beachfront exercise sessions each day that are self guided.


Ultimate beachfront, that’s how close the camp is to the beach. If you’re a slow walker, it might take you two minutes.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Brisbane Airport (BNE), Sydney Airport (SYD), or Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK).

Mojosurf Australia offers transfers from train stations in Sydney and Brisbane and can organise a transfer in Coffs Harbour. Mojosurf Australia do pick-ups from Coffs train station and airport for 30 AUD for an individual, 20 AUD each for 2 to 3 people, and 10 AUD each for 4 or more people.
