The mentawai islands are located in the middle of Indian Ocean, approximately 100 miles from Padang, west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, the Mentawai archipelago is a stunning area rich in nature and beautiful beaches that has been ecologically isolated from mainland Sumatra since the mid-Pleistocene period, resulting in high levels of endemism among its indigenous flora and fauna.
The Mentawai Island chain consist of four main islands, Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai which are surrounded by many others small islands. Siberut is the largest one with an area of approximately 500 800 hectares with a population close to 22.000 citizens, most of them indigenous Mentawaians. High conservation value has attracted the attention of World Wide Fund for Nature and United Nations body UNESCO resulting in the declaration of the Siberut National Park.

To get to the surf paradise is a long journey and involves a lot for the traveler, but once you finish the trip and get to the Islands, you will have your reward and see, why the Mentawai Islands are one of the most desired surf destinations in the world.
The adventure starts in Padang, west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia and there are a few routes to get there. You can book your flight through Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). All flight itineraries need to be confirmed by Mentawai Surf Charters.
Once you arrive and go through the immigration and customs, there will be one of Mentawai Surf Charters staff members waiting for you. He will take your gears to the boat and accommodate you at Mercure Hotel where you can enjoy the lounge and pool area without extra costs. Meals at the hotel and use of facilities like showers and Wi-Fi are available at extra costs. Padang’s airport, Bandara Internasional Minangkabau, is located 20 kilometers north of town.
The boat leaves Padang port at dusk usually after 6:00 p.m. The crossing time depends on the weather conditions and the boat you have chosen, usually take all night. By the time you wake up, the boat will be at the Islands arriving on the first surf spot so you can have your first magic surf session without waste any time.
The boat will arrive back in Padang on the early hours of the last day shown on the schedule; the crew will organize your transfer. Return flights can be book from 10 a.m. onward.
