Location

Margarita Kite School is located in the Setthawadiya neighborhood, between Kalpitiya town and the main spot for kitesurfing. It is just five minutes away from the beach and the main town. From Margarita Kite School, you will also be very close to many interesting places, such as the fish markets, the Dutch fort, and the historical church. Kalpitiya is the best place for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka and one of the best destinations in the world for this sport.

The village of Kalpitiya is located on the shores of the Indian Ocean and the northernmost point of the Peninsula of Kalpitiya with strong winds during the wind seasons, from May to October and from December to March. Kalpitiya Lagoon, with flat waters, is ideal for beginners and freestyle enthusiasts. Also, the Indian Ocean, which is separated from the lake by a small strip of beach, makes this lagoon the best choice to navigate between the waves with endless winds and sublime landscapes.

Kalpitiya is a paradise for lovers of kitesurfing. In addition, the natural, unspoiled environment makes this a unique place in the world for kitesurfing. If you are also passionate about adventure, if you want to know about the culture of Sri Lanka and its people, and want new experiences, you cannot miss this idyllic place.

Kalpitiya is a destination for kitesurfers that is growing very fast since this is the place where you can find the best kitesurfing spots in Sri Lanka. Although more and more people come for kitesurfing daily, mass tourism has not yet arrived and the area is still to be developed in terms of tourism; making it a destination with a special beauty and with many kitesurfing spots yet to be discovered.

The main attraction of Kalpitiya is the flat and shallow waters of the lagoons in the surrounding areas of Kalpitiya, such as the Puttalam Lagoon, the Kalpitiya Lagoon, or the Kappaladi Lagoon. There are many islands on the north of Kalpitiya too, with perfect spots for kitesurfing in flat waters, such as Vella Island and the Dream Spot. Furthermore, the Indian Ocean is also a perfect spot for wave riders from May to October.

Kitesurfing spots

Kalpitiya Lagoon

Kalpitiya Lagoon is the main spot where Margarita Village teaches kitesurfing in Kalpitiiya. Margarita Village provides transport upon request to Kalpitiya Lagoon and it is just a five-minute drive from the place.

Dream Spot

Located in the Dutch Bay, the Dream spot is just 20 minutes by boat from Margarita Village and it is a super cool spot for kitesurfing! It is a kite spot with steady wind and flat waters.

Ilimpattivu Island

This unspoiled and tiny island is the best place to go for a kite trip, as there are not many schools there yet, so most of the time Margarita Villa's students are alone. Very often, they downwind from the Dream Spot to Ilimpattivu Island; all the sceneries on this island are spectacular.

Puttalam Lagoon Island

Margarita Village knows many secret islands located in the very big Puttalam Lagoon that can be reached by boat or just by riding from the Kalpitiya main town.

Mannar

Mannar is the next peninsula north of Kalpitiya and a perfect place for kitesurfing too. From Margarita Villa, there are organized kitesurfing trips to Mannar Island.

Vella Island

Margarita Village provides a beach hut on Vella Island (Portugal Bay), which is also considered one of the top places for kitesurfing in the world. Just 45 minutes by boat north of Kalpitiya. It is a very tiny island inhabited only by fishermen. This island is still very natural and authentic. Also, the steady wind of this area plus the flat and shallow water make it very unique for kitesurfing. Margarita Village provides accommodation on Vella Island to spend two or three kitesurfing days.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by bus

Coming from Negombo to Kalpitiya by local bus is more economical (around 500 rupees) and you will experience the local ambiance and local way of traveling. However, this option is recommended if you plan to travel only during the time and you do not have lots of baggage. Unfortunately, during the weekend and bank holidays you will find it harder to find good bus combinations, so please bear this in mind.

If you are coming from Negombo Airport and want to get to Kalpitiya by local bus, you can get a tuk-tuk outside the airport to Katunayake junction or bus stop (5 minutes - around 500 rupees). Once in Katunayake junction, you can wait for any bus going North to the main cities (Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Mannar, Jaffna). Always ask the driver if one of these buses is going through Palavi town. Once in Palavi town you change bus and get a different bus to Kalpitiya (every 30 minutes before 8:00 p.m.).

Be careful. You should be sure there are seats available before jumping onto the bus unless you want to travel for about three hours standing up. If you want to take the local bus, you can head to the main Negombo bus station, and at Negombo bus station, local buses go to Puttalam town and Palavi town regularly. You can either get off at Palavi town, five kilometers ‘before’ Puttalam and change bus to Kalpitiya (this is best) or stay on the bus and get off in Puttalam town and get a bus to Kalpitiya from there.

Arrival by shuttle

If you come to Kalpitiya in a private vehicle it will take around three hours to drive, except at peak times when there is a lot of traffic. The average cost of a van is around 10,000 rupees and it is the best way to get to Kalpitiya, especially if you have heavy kite equipment and lots of luggage, or if you want to come from Negombo straight to your accommodation in Kalpitiya town, without having to change transport. If you would like to travel by private vehicle, let Margarita Village know and they will arrange this for you and someone will be waiting at the airport upon your arrival.

Arrival by train

Coming to Kalpitiya from Negombo by train is also another cheap option and very interesting! The train Negombo - Palavi is around a three-hour journey. Once in Palavi town, you get off the train and change to a bus to Kalpitiya. The bus stop is just 200 meters away from the train station.
